A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Out of Africa
Project Leader: LEIGH RUST
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

The time has come to work on some of our favouite wildlife subjects: The vast range of African animals!

Choose any medium and approach to show the glory of majestic beasts such as lions, cheetahs, and elephants, through to the cheeky nature of meerkats!

With each piece try to give a brief description of what made you create the work.

I'm looking forward to seeing the vast talents of those here in WC! showing just how they make their work roar to life!

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/index.php?cmd=view_details&proj_id=1036)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

This is sooo cute! I have a soft spot for wildlife work which emcompasses a family element. I love the way you've done the baby zebra. It's got that newborn innocence in it's eyes.
What size is this piece? What made you choose them as a subject?
Let us know :) I'm always interested in what draws each artist to their subject.

That is strange a sent you a really long PM.
After this week i am off school for 3 weeks..
so if we could a lesson before then it would be great.
Perhaps we could even work on this project together.
I realise you are pretty booked up with the baby..
but suppose you could slot me in?
if not perhaps on a weekend or we can wait until the next holidays :)

Sounds like a great project! I have loads of photos taken from the Ft. Worth Zoo, and the now defunct Grand Prairie Safari Park. I should be able to come up with one or two good subjects!

Leigh, all your posted work is sensational but this one really makes me smile! I was unfamiliar with Meerkats until seeing them in the Ref Library. They rather remind me of our Prairie Dogs in the USA. Anyway, this grouping is just adorable and so very well rendered.

I LOVE this !!! Meerkats always make me smile! You did a wonderful job portraying this cute little animal family! The detail is stunning! I'm curious ... do you have a sepia graphite pencil or did you change the color with the computer? Or am I just seeing things?? LOL! It has a sepia tone to it and I find that really pleasant ... especially with animals!

Most artists I know use Artistco watercolour paper for their CP work, though I do prefer the smoother finish of bristol board. Try to use at least 300gsm as it is much more resilient. My penchant for bristol board is just an after effect of so many years in the comic business.

I have found that Stonehenge paper is good with colored pencil. It's heavy enough and resilient to work on. Just another choice. I usually get supplies from a catalog ... Daniel Smith carries Stonehenge.

Lol don't worry Carolyn, I could well be wrong too :) I _think_ it's a jag because of the markings but it's not easy to remember which is which! The way I figure it, they're both beautiful animals anyways! Yeah Mandy, These were done with charcoal. I actually use charcoal pencils for the majority of work such as this to allow me greater detail and control.

But Leigh where do you get your paper from..
I have no idea where to get bristol board from.
Do you have to get people at the store to cut it to the right
size for you? is it expensive? do i want hot-press..

I get my paper from many sources, including Dean's Art, Riot Art and Craft, Artistcare, Seniors Art Supplies and Melbourne Art Supplies. The stuff I use I've bought in pads of A4, A3 and A2 sizes.
Hot press is what I prefer, I like to have a smooth surface to build up on. Its also what I used to work with for my comic work as it took brush and ink beautifully without feathering.
Bockingford is what I'm currently using.
Hope this helps! :)

Dean's Art is in the city near JB Hifi and Artistcare is in Berwick. I've dealt with Artistcare since my comic days and have always found them excellent for service.
Dean's Art is the most likely source for bristol board as they have a huge store.

Welcome aboard Janet! This looks like it will be a really cute piece! The eyes are starting to form nicely though I might suggest checking your proportions. The colours you are working with are good choices, just add a couple of darker tones along with white and cream to give more variation in value which will help your contrast.
You are on the right track and with the guidance of other members you'll do well.

Where did you see these lions? They look Southern Africa. I like the softness and harmony it portrays.

I actually got the chance to get to know these guys at the Werribee Open Range Zoo when I went on a special tour called the Rip Roaring Feed. It was a truly inspiring and life changing experience. If it looks authentic to you it has a lot to do with the incredible amount of effort they put into making the environment look as it should be.

Thankyou, Leigh!
I haven't done much since that last photo, hope to get a few hours in this evening, though. That sketch is taken directly from a google image of a bongo calf (cows have horns same as males). It showed the leg structure and markings that I needed to complete this painting. I started this project with 4 photos and only as much knowlege of this animal as its common name. Now through my research I know more about bongos than I am likely to ever need again! LOL! But that is the fun of this kind of project, to learn something of the subject in order to paint it realistically! BTW, I am really impressed by the quality work everyone is putting into this project! There is some really super work here!

Thanks Leigh and Gary,
I enjoyed making this piece. She does have a youngster in the photo but I chose this cropping. Part of the 'inking out' was to make her browline from straight to more of a curve to add emotion.
"O-Rang's Cousin" is coming along very well.

This is such a cutie and a good start, but I think you can push this one further (just my opinion!) maybe some darker values, and maybe extend the background so theres not that white ring around baby. I do like the softness youve got though I'd like to see a larger version!

Mandy, I know full well that tigers do not live in Africa. However what I know and what I do don't always jell as you can see. This a condition related to the "do as I say, not what I do" school of thought. I have a Gorilla on the easel that does come from the right place. He will show up shortly

Obn the other hand, thanks for the nice comment about the aformentioned transplant to Africa

Leigh, Carolyn, I wanted to thank you for the comments.
This rock has been given me by a friend of mine, all my friends know that I do rock painting and so, if they find rocks that look suitable or good enough for painting, they bring them to me. This friend of mine said " I don't see anything at all in this rock, but maybe you do" , and I did : I saw an elephant in it.
Thanks
