View Full Version : Encasing Rubino

Does anyone else have a problem encasing Rubino in clear?
I like to put Rubino in the center and have a nice thick layer of clear, but I've had almost all of the beads crack. If they're not cracked when they come out of the kiln, they usually crack a day or a week later. At first I thought it might be the Kugler clear I was using but I tried it with Effetre clear and had the same results. None of my other encased beads crack...simply the Rubino.
Ideas?
Thanks

Try making a tiny basebead of clear, then the rubino and then clear again... and pray. I have had this happening too, a complete set was ruined because of the darn rubino, I just bought a new batch and this one is even worse. The color is ugly , looks muddy when encased, and has an orange sheen to it. I also encountered some that looks as if it has a blue haze over it when encased. I hate it when they change a good recipe... I won't be buying rubino again without testing on some small beads first.

Hi
How strange - just this morning I opened the kiln to find a rubino encased bead cracked:mad: . It's the first time I've had this happen with rubino - I thought maybe it was my new batch of Vetrofond but the other encased beads seem fine.

I have noticed some of the batches of Rubino just are not compatible with other colors unless you are using it in smaller amounts. I have my rubino split in two cubies.
One that can be encased- with a base of clear or white.
And the other holds 3 batches of rubino that does not work encased.
I have also found this rubino to be sticky. It needs to be seperated from other beads and not touch when the rubino is dotted or a design on the top of the bead. If they kiss they will stick together until the temperature starts dropping.
One batch I have is a pale rubino and it makes beautiful beads on its own. I do not need clear or white to get a beautiful rasberry-cranberry color. I just decorate the outside of the bead and anneal them at 925.
Try testing your batches and keep them seperated. Use the rubberband that are covered- For hair! This works great!!! And it is a cheap way to keep batches seperated. I learned mixing batches of the same color glass will haunt you in the future. I even label each batch with the date of purchase and the location purchased....Frantz= FR Flametree=FL etc. That way when I find a bad clear or hazy black, I do not buy it from that vendor for months. I guess I just got off topic.......sorry......
Some batches of rubino do not work encased.......

Oh I wish I was so organized. :)
You could also try to make the rubino layer as thin as possible and see if that helps.
I wonder what was added to the rubino to make the COE off a little bit.

Yes, this is what I have been trying to do and it seems to help a little....it's still a very iffy thing.
Thanks!

Dang, what a great idea! I'm going to have to give that a try.

That's weird because I have rubino from all the different effetre batches, and I routinely MIX my rubino with clear to get a paler version of it - rubino come stoo dark for my liking. I have never had a problem with rubino and clear mixed, cracking. (effetre clear)

You must have OLD batches since I haven't had a problem either that's the only thing I can think of.

Heidi I think you are right. The old batches only have one ring of color in them., the new ones have two or three, and look sort of yellowish or blue-ish. Weird glass. Thank goodness Lauscha stepped in and made their own rubino wich is the ABSOLUTE best fushia I have seen so far ( okay tourmaline pink is awesome as well, but a bit fussy)
