I´m taking another workclass doing a master copy. This is a Jean-Léon Gérôme painting called " Black Bashi-Bazouk" from 1869. I love the colors, and find the skintones a real challenge.

Thanks a lot for all your kind words! I love this one - the colors are, as Jean points out, just splendid on clothes and hat. I guess she´s seen the original ;)
I´ll keep you posted:)
Here´s a closeup on the hat

I love the echoes of the headscarf (?) colors showing up in the face. This is wonderful to watch progress.

Some more work done on the hat.

oh I love the complexity of that hat. All those colors and designs. But the funny thing is that as colorful as the hat is, it doesn't take anything away from the strength and solidity of the face. The lips and nose are so proud and dignified.

at first I had to thot because the face is exquisit, but the brite color of the hat, takes a lot away from the face. Look at Rembrandt and the way he did the same type of piece, and if you can see clear to do it, tone down the hat by 60% ;-)

Progress. More or less finished the hat. Gonna take the rest of the painting now, and then do the last bits and pieces of shadows and light etc.

Got absolutely fed up with the hat, so I started on the dress instead.

Edit: One too many
I can tell you that I'll never get fed up with any part of this painting.
The subject is perfect princely dignity. The painting is the most wonderful example of your smooth painting style. Colors are gorgeous and the clothing/hat are so very interestingly complex and beautiful!
What a great painting this is!
Thank you for giving us the pleasure of watching it develop.

Here´s the update of tonight. I´m almost finished, and to tell you the truth - this is a painting I´m gonna miss painting. I love the colors of it! Usually I´m more or less fed up with my paintings after a while and have to force myself to finish but (apart from the last thingys on the hat) this was a joy all the way through :)
