A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Flora or Fauna
Project Leader: mlelevier
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Mixed Media
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Paint your favorite flower or animal using one of the many Mixed Media techniques.
This is the chance to try one you have not tried or simply try Mixed Media for a change.
Put your creativity to work. Maybe you use only one medium and this would be the moment to mix your favorite medium with another.

This is a list of possibilities for this project besides the ones you might already have in your mind:

Collage
Encaustic
Printmaking
Woodburning
Collage and spray paint on paper
Pastel and Ink
Gouche and Ink
Graphite, Charcoal and Gouche
Graphite and Ink
Graphite, Oil Pencil and Prismacolor
Charcoal, India Ink and Graphite on paper
Pastel, Watercolor and Ink
Watercolor, Gouche and Graphite
Acrylic, Colored Drawing Ink and Charcoal

Alternative materials such as sand, marble dust, pumice stone dust, papers, fibers, gesso.

Washes, pours, stains and resists.

This would be a never ending list as the possibilities in the world of Mixed Media is really up to the creativity of each artist and a little knowledge of what materials work or do not work, combined in different ways.

Free your spirit. Experiment and most of all, have fun!!!

Thanks Mary and Chris. I'm still not really sold on the watercolour crayons, although some artists manage to get stunning results with them. The acrylic inks I have had for years and use them a lot for decorative purposes, rather than finished paintings.

Mary, I'd like to see a larger version of your entry, but I can't seem to bring up the enlarged version of yours or mine.

There must have been something awry with my computer - I kept getting a vast blank space. However, my computer-literate half has solved an email problem and now I can see the bigger picture at long last!!!

It's looking good Mary - anxious to see the finishing touches.

This is just astonishing Mary. Just brilliant. You are well and truly back to your Mixed Media with a bang.

So now I have a question ... how do I go about doing an oil pour. I aplogise if you have answered this question before. I would love to try it.

Mary Woodul
04-27-2006, 06:47 AM
Li thank you! I was a little worried about the maguey looking too somber but they are quite drab although there is something about them that attracts me to them. It was fun trying an acrylic pour on the flower but I couldn't control it like the oil pour, ha,ha.

Thank you, Chris!

Chris, the oil pour is so much fun.:D An oil pour is basically oil diluted in solvent as thin or thick as you want it depending the transparency you want. You can pour it over the work at the last or before, for a bg like I did in the Maguey. You can pour it over acrylic but never the reverse. If you want to touch up after or acentuate, it would have to be with oil, like in any oil painting.

If you pour the oil stain over acrylic before the acrylic dries, it makes some very interesting threads. It also work nicely over gessoed areas. I filled in the drawing of the cactus flower with gesso, to give it some texture and relief.

Sonia, I just love this! The combination with blue and green looks great.

What is acrylic ink? I don't think I have seen it here. I just found individual watercolors in a bottle with a dropper that I am having a wonderful time with but I still don't know what I'm going to do with it.:D

Sonia
04-28-2006, 03:10 PM
Mary, the inks I have had for quite some years (and am only just beginning to replace some of the colours) are FW Acrylic Artists Inks (Daler Rowney). The colours are very strong and usually need watering down quite a bit. I have tended to use them for decorative work - cards, wording and illustrations in artists books, painted papers etc. I have only used them on a couple of occasions for complete paintings, but some artists produce really stunning work with them.

Avie, I'm very sorry about this but I got carried away with the beautiful image and since I am in the D/S forum quite a bit I must have forgotten where I was.:o I will have to remove it because the regulations of the project are that it be mixed media. Hi Carol! I get colored inks down here made by Windsor and Newton and there are a lot of different water based inks at art supply stores There are also liquid water colors that I have been playing with together with the ink and the effect is very nice.

HI drawn2 - sorry I haven't replied sooner, but I have been away on holiday.

The acrylic inks I use are "FW Acrylic Artists Ink" made by Daler Rowney which I believe is an American company. Speedry Magic Colour Liquid Acrylic Colours are made by Royal Sovereign (my info has a UK address). Both are supplied in bottles (approx. 28ml or 1 US fl. ounce), with a dropper lid - a little goes a long way as you usually need to dilute with water for washes. Can be used with pen, brush or airbrush.

I love this painting so much, I am drawn back to it over and over. Its funny too because I don't care for succulents at all but the way you did this is just wonderful and interesting for the eye and soul. It makes me want to paint something like this but it wont be the same.

Desiree, thank you so much for such a nice comment. I'm sure your's would be stunning. They are interesting to paint with that beautiful movement in their leaves.

Hi
i've never used mixed media before ( except when i'm teaching the kids about collages) but i'm trying to expand my artistic horizons and feel i should at least experiment and get to know different medium

So I signed upfor this project hoping that you guys will give me lots of hints and comments:D

Got to say i've been looking at all the work and it looks so great it's daunting but I like a challenge so can I play with you guys?

I've already started practising and have completed my first mixed media piece. i used water colours, gouache, water colour pencils, and soft pastels on my project entry for the marine art project. Now i'm ready to tackle my flora and fauna.
