Since I have done a couple of Pope John Paul II I thought it is only fitting that I do one of the current Pope....this is actually 8 X 10 in @ 400 dpi...I used as a ref a picture of him I was sent in a newsletter there are also alot of pics on the Vaticans website HERE (http://www.vatican.va/phome_en.htm).
Used the grid thing again

I'm sure it will be lovely when it's done Marge

Marge you are getting quite the collection going here. I'm sure this one will be as good as the others too. I will watch for the finish.

04-18-2006, 01:59 PM
Thank you Jean and Sherry...yes I'm doing a wall grouping I have an antique cross that I will put these around. :)

Well here is an update ... this is the 2nd head of him I have done so far I got so aggrivated with the first attempt that I cleared the whole layer. LOL This is not going as easy as John Paul...could be the emotion difference at any rate I have a long way to go.

I love how we get to follow your progress! It's going to be good, even if frustrating.

Marge, have you checked your private messages?

04-18-2006, 07:04 PM
Sometimes, it helps to start over. It can be easier the second time. Looking good, so far!

04-18-2006, 10:56 PM
Thank you Skinny and yes I have and replied to yours Sunday. ;o) So you might want to check yours LOL:wave:

Thanks Digi it definitely helped me to start over I decided to go my own way with his coloring. So it is going a bit smoother still going to take a long time.

Here is another update adding more colors to his skin and defining some areas I noticed I managed to bring his left eye down so will have to work on that next. LOL

Yes, I can see you're getting into your groove. Good!

I was talking about my reply to the reply which must have gotten lost in cyberspace. I just sent it again.

04-19-2006, 12:33 PM
Thanks Skinny and just replied to you again and the 3rd party LOL

I think what makes it so hard is I came off of a high from painting Pope John Paul and every time I do a painting that I have poured alot of emotion into it is hard for me to start another one. LOL Sounds silly I know.

04-19-2006, 08:26 PM
He's looking great Marge:thumbsup: and your remark doesn't sound silly at all I think we all have experienced that a time or two :)

Hey! you're doing really well! i'll be waiting for more advances...although i prefer the other pope....:)

04-19-2006, 10:33 PM
Thanks Jean I know you understand what I am talking about after all you have put up with my silliness for alot of years now.

Kareen thank you and I think we will all grow to love the present Pope with time after all he had and still has the greatest teacher that ever lived.

Anyway here is update 4 and I am having fits with his skin tone!! :crying:

04-20-2006, 02:09 AM
This is looking great Marge.
Maybe some red in the shadows?

04-20-2006, 03:34 AM
This is looking great. I'm looking forward to what you do wth the background.

04-20-2006, 07:08 AM
Thank you Sherry...took your advice and added some red tones to the shadows.

Thank you Elaine...I played with the background on this update too still not sure I want this one but will wait till I have his stole finished it has alot of gold embellishment on it and he also has a gold rope to be added.

04-21-2006, 02:43 PM
Hey Marge, blessed be ye brush! this is great... love the texture! Quite a exhaulted series you've got going... you're onto something!;)

04-21-2006, 03:40 PM
Thank you Joel and seriously....I think you might be right I seem to have found what I am suppose to be painting and the thing is I find it very relaxing and calming even when I am fretting over skin tone LOL.
Here is update # 6 got away from his face and started the embellishment on his stole.

04-21-2006, 04:17 PM
Marge your painting is lovely  and the satin of his gown is outstanding, I'll be back for the next update

04-21-2006, 05:16 PM
Nice, work so far, are you going to add more life to the eyes? They seem a little indistinct with the rest of the portrait very distinct.

04-21-2006, 05:23 PM
That's one of the toughest things about skin tones...they're going to react so much to the colors around them. I don't think you can make final adjustments until the last, until after you see what the rest of the painting has done to those tones. It's looking pretty solid right now.

04-21-2006, 11:11 PM
Thank you Jean , Edie, and Skinny  It is hard to finalize the face till all the other colors are around. I did however put more life in his eyes since the darkness around him and the reds seemed to wash them out. ;o) Here is update 7 and I am going to call it a night on him.

Splendid Marge!

He looks to be positioned a little high in the frame. I would add more headroom or shift him downward.

Marge, you're inspiring!

04-22-2006, 11:01 AM
Those textures are VERY good! and I like the more focussed look to his eyes. It's fun watching the brocade take shape.

04-22-2006, 11:25 AM
Sherry...Thank you!

Joel...Thank you and your right that was my cropping after I got the sketch down I cropped too close (mind must have gone on vacation LOL) anyway I fixed that. Thanks again for the heads up!

Kristen...Thank you and this embellishment is going to take days...you know I am starting to think that the current Pope is a bit flashy with his Vestments. LOL

04-22-2006, 12:26 PM
wonderful portrait LA. love the determination in his look.

04-22-2006, 01:27 PM
Thank you so much Chandran for stopping in and for the nice comment! He does have a very determined look to him. :)

Here is update 8 worked a little this morning adjusted the head room LOL and worked on that stole some more. I'm going to have painters cramp before I finish this! LOL

04-22-2006, 08:42 PM

04-23-2006, 04:41 PM
Thank you Jean! Well I have come to the end, I think, LOL I know I could keep working on this but it has been 6 days and I am ready to move on unless there is something major that needs attention.

04-23-2006, 06:45 PM
Hey Marge you are doing better and better in portraiture! very reallistic! bravoooooo!

04-23-2006, 10:46 PM
Thank you Kareen I seem to have found my niche in painting as far as subject matter.

04-23-2006, 11:02 PM
Wonderfully done Marge, the only thing I think I might do is make the pupils of his eyes a bit smaller, though I know it is possible they are that large but in bright light it isn't usual.
You have done a fantastic job with this image!

04-23-2006, 11:23 PM
Thanks Edie  The pupils are not as large as they look...here is a close up...

04-24-2006, 04:51 AM
