This painting was again based on one of Fagan's beautiful pictures in the RIL. Thanks Fagan. This one was a real struggle, thought it would be easy but it turned out to be difficult. Again the colours of the painting are nicer than in this photo. Somehow I cannot get the colours to match.
Wallis paper 35 x 25 cm, Rembrandt, Sennelier and FC polychromos.

Must have been a lot of work? didn't it?
If you like fruit & vegetables so much, you'll have to see the works by Juan Sanchez Cotan. Great stuff. (Try Google)
Just continue (I would say!!)
 Maarten

I will google him Maarten. I framed the oranges this afternoon, similar frame and mat as the grapefruit. Looks great, as you can imagine. Cheers and thanks once again.

I googled Juan Sanchez Cotan Maarten. Indeed he did some wonderful stuff. I am always amazed what they could achieve in those days with limited resources.
By the way the oranges did take me many hours.

Marina, great work! I love the thin white line where the left orange meets the surface!

04-11-2006, 10:20 AM
Thank you Cindy. Pleased you like it.That thin white line was not difficult to do. In fact it is the light blue from the background. I just put it on first a bit wider than I wanted it to be and then I put the orange of the oranges on top of it. The difficult bit was getting the 3d effect. In the beginning it all looks so flat. Just playing with the lights and darks is so fascinating. When the values are correct it suddenly all falls into place. That I find the most enjoyable of painting this sort of paintings. Cheers

Awesome! It looks like a photograph instead of a painting! How did you get those colours and lines this sharp? When I'm doing pastels, I often get soft lines, I always find it hard to make them sharp...

04-12-2006, 05:23 AM
Thank you Enigma. I had a look at your website, you make some gorgeous photographs.
Getting the lines so sharp is not very difficult, it just takes some practice. There are several ways of doing it. You can take a sharp edge of your pastel, if necessary break a piece of. You can use your fingers to get the sharp lines, or you can use some tools. You can either use a colourshaper, a Q-tip (wattenstaafje) or a tortillon. The lines in the pulp I did with FC polychromos, a hard square pastel. Hope this helps with your problem. By the way looking at your Avocet, you are doing pretty well.

Thanks a lot! :)
An the tips are very useful, thanks :)

Hi Marina!
I keep coming back to have a look at these oranges of yours. They look so real! :)

04-13-2006, 01:18 AM
OK, I can actually smell and TASTE these slices! GREAT job!

04-13-2006, 09:12 AM
Thanks Mariska and Sooz, pleased you like it. :) . By the way in reality it is much more a pastel than a photo. Taking the photograph made it look different. Somehow you cannot get the subtleties with a picture.

04-13-2006, 03:17 PM
Boy, do these look juicy and good enough to eat, and the blue background complements them so wonderfully.

04-13-2006, 06:06 PM
It is so exciting seeing what pastels can do. Thanks for sharing.

04-14-2006, 09:30 AM
Wow Marina! This is gorgeous. Brilliantly rendered.

04-14-2006, 05:03 PM
Debbie, Potoma and Leigh, thanks a lot. I am just overwhelmed by all the reactions.

05-23-2006, 03:24 PM
Ik dacht eerst dat je hier een foto plaatste, maar super!!!
I don`t really like eating oranges, but now the I want to take the first part from the screan!!!

05-23-2006, 04:49 PM
The colors look great to me *S* I'm impressed It's beautiful and they are only oranges LOL What beauty lies in an orange Or at least yours LOL

05-23-2006, 09:15 PM
Wow. This looks great. I can't imagine what it must be like IRL if the color in life is better. I wish I could paint something that well.

05-24-2006, 04:45 PM
Thanks Oneilltje, Luvy and Ronda for your nice comments about the oranges. Pleased you like them.
