I'm new to portraiture and I'm quite afraid of it. I understand that it takes practice....This is my first one, it's of my husband. It wasn't difficult because I know his face so well but even so, it's not 100% him. The smallest variation in placement of a shadow or a feature changes the image dramatically. Very intimidating.

He's a nice looking guy! I think that portraits are always scary because of the detail and accuracy required. The more you do, the better you get. I have done several dozen portraits and I still need practice, but I keep getting better!

Sometimes when you know the subject you're trying to portray too well, it gets in the way of what you're seeing (did that make sense?).

If you're working from a photo, try turning it upside down. That way all the familiar features you're used to seeing everyday become simple shapes...much easier to draw or paint!
