I was sent an email the other day with this link http://www.rense.com/general67/street.htm
it shows Julian Beever's, an english artist, chalk/pastel street drawings.
these drawings are utterly incredible - when viewed from a certain points they actually seem 3D, and when viewed from the opposite side- totally disproportioned - which it has to be in order to provide the other view.
it is really fascinating to see what adjustments artists have to/can do with "monumental" art for people to perceive it "in scale".
the greeks did it with their architecture - all their columns had curves in order to look straight
in the byzantine churches the paintings/mosaics in the domes and along the upper parts of the buildings were painted to be viewed from the floor level, so when viewed straight on the figures looked very disproportioned-
fairly top heavy, because of location and curve.
anyway - these are fun to see.....:D

I've seen some amazing trompe l'oeil, but this is ridiculously amazing.
There's even a photo where a pedestrian goes around a pit.
Thank you ! It's on my list for sure !

It's called anamorphic perspective. Very tricky to do without a calculator or computer.

If you like those check out http://www.streetpainting.net/ The website has a tendency to not work from time to time. So if it isn't working try back again. It shows most of the best street painting artist in the world.

Must use a ton of sticks to paint these, but how FUN it looks! I watched the sidewalk artists in York, UK one year...endlessly fascinating...
