this is an on-site sketch of my husband last fall in the park near our home ...
One of my favorites ;-) Also a good example of how I would use charcoals to be able to watercolor over later.

I like the face! But the arms look like you tried to squeeze them into the paper and are too small and misshaped UNLESS you are going for an expressive effect in which case I'd say there is an interesting contrast between the adult face and beard and the delightfully childlike expression of contentment on his face which the arms reinforce by bringing to mind the body of a child.

No child arms intended, just a mistake of the drawing, and I wouldn't pick up any charcoal before painting over this ( although I'm leaving this one ).
I think it's an excellent idea to use lots of watercolors in your sketchbook, extra practice!

I sketch. I paint over it with watercolors. Be sure to use clean brush and water every minute! Also, work in the white areas of the paper and pull your colors over the charcoal, the black will mix and serve as your shadows. Your brushstrokes are very important in this so that you don't drag charcoal all over the paper. Otherwise it's easy.
