Well I have to also confess flowers are not my forte..but it is an interesting challenge ..used pastels too.(.also not in my comfort zone of mediums)! Thanks Arlene for tonight..this is a great concept and a fantastic way to join artists on the web..

great job on both:) Im surprised to hear so many people saying they dont do flowers and yet they all turned out so great! I really like the blending on the iris. Very vibrant colour and yet delicately faded. thumbs up!!
Second flower is an orchid I think??

Those were my 2 favorites, too. I think I'll try them in pastel too. I like the soft look of the irus petals. I don't know how you did those 2 pictures (and well) in 2 hours.

Mae,
I'll have to agree with Caron on the nice job you did on blending the color on the iris. I know nothing of pastels, but if you hadn't told us, I would have first taken it for watercolor. It looks so much like an iris too.
The names of the other flowers are orchids, but I couldn't tell you the variety.

Have a great day! :)

Nice colours! I like the way these turned out, sort of sketchy but also complete in their own way.

oh..thankyou so much for your positive feedback! I guess I am hard on myself because I am used to the control a pencil or fine paintbrush offers and the flowers feel unfinished..Guess I just have to look at them through a different lens! I was impressed by the wide array of interpretations of these photos by all of you (even the most self critical :)) and even though we may struggle at times..ultimately it is so gratifying

Very nice for both flower posts, Mae! Wish I'd made it in last night ... am seriously thinking of attempting a sketch of one of these flowers anyways ... not sure I'll post it ... depends if it looks like a flower or not. :D  I have to agree, pastels are great for doing flowers. :)

I especially like the iris -- very nice depth on that!

ah shucks..thanks folks
dnip..i used pencil first ..then a mixture of oil and chalk pastels..not sure about how to describe my technique..just try to use colour as if it's paint..blend and experiment
