I drew this last night when I couldn't sleep. I think I made a mistake by using a white conte crayon with my watercolor pencils. Do these two not mix? I think I'll try this again with out using the conte crayon. I wanted a more intense white - what would you suggest I use? I am pretty new to this (obviously) :) .
thank you.

The swan is lovely! Llights can be intensified by increasing the darks along side them, especially in the water.
Pretty good for a wee hours effort! :)

I think this is really cool looking. If I would have left anything out, it would be the darker blue. I see nothing wrong with the white conte.

Thank you for your encouragement! Here's an update. I added some more color, created (i hope) a little more contrast and added just a little fine ink.

Looks good but I like the darker atmosphere of the first one, personally
I agree with troy--the first one has atmosphere and mood but still both are gracefully drawn and are really nice!

Isn't it funny how we can draw into the wee hours? I think you have done a beautiful job here-and i like the first one a lil more too.

Thank you for your comments.
The scanner actually is the one giving the 'multiple choice' of which swan it the 'real' swan. IRL the background is more of a light to medium charcoal grey-- I like the smoky look of the first post too - but I had nothing to do with it :( other than I can't control this stupid computer!!!!

Very nicely done, I also like the first a bit better then the other, but they are both beautiful.

i love the first one! can you use your color pencils to create that same effect IRL? the darker bg makes the white really pop.

thank you all for your feedback and thank you Fozbot for your suggestion. I read that and thought, why didn't I think of that?
Here's my update. My scanner isn't scanning very true to life but I darkened up the one side, lightened the middle, drew more contrasts in the body and added blues and violets to the shadows. I also brightened up the beak.
I've mixed so many mediums--- CP, ArtStix, Watercolor pencils, Derwent Drawing pencil in chinese white. I'm sure i am making mistakes with that. I don't know how to classify that last pencil either. How do you know what mixes with what?
