Here's a painting I posted in the Watercolor forum.

I painted a plein air sketch on a recent visit (sketched outside, laid washes in the adjacent cafe as it was around 40F) 8x6 cartridge sketch book:

And here's my studio painting - which I don't thinks is as good - 14x19 Langton rough block:

Both of these are great. The way you've captured the castle and the mountains is very scenic. I, too have a preference for the first. I think the reason is the castle is bigger and more foreboding in the scene.

Nice work!

Doug, one other comment, you've done a splendid job in the original at showing a texture in the brickwork. That's not so clear in the larger work. You can do that because the castle is closer in the original. You've also given the second a different "mood" -- the sky is clear and bright, even on the distant mountains. In the first, you have this wonderful brooding sky over the welsh mountains.

I like the second one a lot. But when I compare them :) I like the first best.

I like the first one better too for the same reason. I love the atmosphere. Really really nice job.
