My local small-community newspaper printed a very nice article about me and my work. It just came out a couple days ago and I've gotten at least 2 portrait commissions from it so far! I had been running a display ad there for about 3 months (at $65/mo). I don't know if this would work in a large urban market, but small town papers are hungry for stories.
This paper is a one-woman operation and she's having trouble keeping up. So I suggested that I could help with layout (read: DO the layout) in exchange for my own page...and I think she's gonna go for it. I can run my ad, write a simple how-to-draw column, showcase other local artists...maybe have a "Kid's Corner" kind of thing. It's a 28 page paper, but the DTP shouldn't be too hard...and I can make it look a lot better than she does. It's a win-win situation!
