I am just wondering...
How can we give each other constructive feedback and critique on scetches ?? It is quite different from doing critique on finished drawings or paintings...

Michael or anywone with more experience in drawing/scetching can you guide us?

Henrik,

Personally, for a sketching critique I'd like to hear where the proportions of the figure look off (when it's not stylized) and if stylizewd or more expressive - where the figure is and isn't working; what impressions it gives.

I have an idea. Perhaps we can post a photo that interests us..here, and then we can all do sketches (either accurate or expressive), and post them as well. (let me know what you think). (Photos need to have readible darks and lights, the best should have a (CLEAR!!)range of lights, middle values, and darks, GOOD!! black and white photos work well. I actually had an area in my gallery in which I wanted to offer help and dialog both ways about drawings and sketches...how they feel..what we were trying to convey..accomplish etc.) I removed that area from my gallery due to lack of response..but again, I was looking for people interested in figure drawing mostly. Requirements were a scanner..and email. Drawings can easily be scanned (quality is fairly good..sketches/drawings are small)..and attached to emails.
Milt has a corner on critiquing realistic work...(a VERY!!! discerning eye), and I can offer some help with realistic pieces also. (How to critique an expressive piece?????) hummmm..would be very subjective I think.
It will depend on what you are trying to accomplish with your sketch or drawing..and this could be stated along with your post.
I am VERY involved in drawings in which there are degrees of intentional distortion..why?..well, I find when you combine a high degree of anatomical accuracy...and then begin to shift the elements..it just makes for more a more "interesting" final product. (I'll be posting some of these at some point, and a few can be seen in my gallery). Conventional portraiture I regard VERY highly...but, for an extreme example, I (personally) respond MUCH!!!! more to Bacon's work.
Let me know what you think. I'm always happy to receive work via email..but it would benefit all of us to post work HERE or in the Critique area. Lets let each other know how we feel about just HOW to do this...

btw..no substitute for drawing from life, either in the classroom, or while you're out and about during your days. (something I need to do more of myself)

sgtaylor and kaz..I'm still looking for a good b&w photo for reference..but if anyone has one they want to work from..put it up!!

No tracing (lol!)..kaz, eye it up..free-hand..go for it!!

lets see what gets posted for reference..(not TOO complicated for starters.
(Kaz..I used to do LOTS of cartoon drawings..that is ALL I did before I began to take figures seriously. (will find a couple and perhaps post..you too, if you have a couple to show us!) I used to copy the work of Mort Drucker in "MAD" magazine!! oh well, what can I say..he was GREAT!!

kaz..LOVE THEM!!! I've bookmarked your gallery. Nice line..especially with ink. (Something I NEVER use..well, an emphasized line here and there). "Melancholy" and "Mustard" are my favorites. You have a very good eye for line, and I really like the way you handled the tree!! Looking foreward to seeing more..and are you going to tackle Kim's photo??? Will be fun to see everyone's results. Thank you for showing us your work. Michael
kaz, by the way..I am guessing you like the artwork that appears in comic books also..I do too. There are some great drafts-persons out there.. Beautiful full-color covers. Now comics are a unique art form..and I (personally) think it is truly a "fine" art. I have a book called "The Studio"...and it contains the work of Jeffery Jones, Michael Kaluta, Barry Windsor Smith, and Berni Wrightson (Wrightson..talk about CONTROL with pen and ink!!!) Perhaps you know of some of these artists?? Find work by Jeffery Jones..his early ink strip "IDYL"..just beautiful ink drawings.
One more name for you..he is a contemporary fine artist, is represented by the Gomez Gallery in Baltimore...Kent Williams...exceptional paintings...and he came from an illustration/comic book background. VERY VERY strong paintings..you can find these people on the internet..I bet.
Catch you in the Cafe..Michael

Kaz,
Your drawings rock!! I love 'Puppy with a Rose'. That was such an interesting treatment of the subject.
