This is cool Jolanta. Welcome to this thread. I have being working on a landscape of Constable did you see my sketch on the thread 1? This thread keeps me focus on sketching and doodling, so good to have you here. :)

Hi Rose,
I sure did see your landscape in this thread and I love it. I know you are working really hard on portraits but I am so glad you are trying different things too. I like very much your landscape. Why don't you do some more - maybe this is your real call??? Of course you can do anything you like but we don't really know what we are good at until we try:D I try everything I can think of and I like some better than others but this is what makes it fun.
Thanks for all great links you are providing for us. I don't have time to look around internet. I really appreciate your help:wave:

Hi Jolanta, I am glad you liked. Yeah landscapes are on my thoughts for sure. Sketching and drawing have being something that I discovered to be a wonderfull practice to prepare myself for painting. It gets you in the mood and help me work out some issues before hand. I have to admit, I am lazy!!! :D But I am trying to discipline myself on daily routine, as the same of working from life instead of photos. Here is the doodle of the day! :D

All I want to know "Why is it my fault when the gutter falls off the side of the house?"

Well dah, I don't know. Maybe Titanium will know who this is, how about you Donna? That's all right I am going to do this again, better next time I hope.

Will try for later today to sketch again, then I will say who it is a study of. So you don't really have to guess. :) Unless the gutter falls on my head.

Hey Rose, I can see why you say Russian. He certainly has on a nice Fur Russian Hat. Can't say for sure where he got his hat! My husband actually wears a hat like this in the winter, hence my attraction to this study. This is the 2nd study today. I didn't hit close this time either. Tried a different paper, and charcoal pencils this time. I'll do it again, but maybe later. These are fast sketches about 20 minutes.

The drawning by Caspar David Friedrich: It is a portrait of his father. Friedrich was German. This is the actual drawing I have to work from below. It is a copy I have here.

I forgot this is classical forum - no place for silly faces:eek: Here is something more serious. Just quick line drawings done in seconds - no pencil under. Piece of paper, pen, full concentraction and you go fast and hope it will work. Speed is very important because it shows in lines. First done in pen, second in charcoal pencil.

Thought, so sweet and did mine. But  didnt know you just kidding. LOLOL Cool! This is 15 minutes, my hand, 4b graphite pencil. :)

Nickel, cool study. Yeah the fur hat confused me. Not real skull though, just pics. :)

Yeah dex that is hubby. Not sleeping though, just tried to concentrate on gesture and proportions instead of details.

Thanks - this is my favorite doodling scribling with the pen. I didn't do it for long time I have to do more. Good exercise for imagination too. Sometimes when I start them I don't know what will happen just let the hand go. Sometimes I have something in mind and try to capture it. It's fun - try it. I use typing paper or any cheap paper I can find around.

But this caught my attention.

Yupo Ultrasmooth Multimedia Paper Pads on sale But

Yupo is the world's first erasable watercolor paper.

It is imported from Japan, it is non-absbsorbant, it is synthetic paper, takes pen, ink, pencil and marker and of course watercolor.

Well thats all I got to say. Maybe I can put it on my list of things I want for sure to play with. Anybody ever used this before? Am I behind the times and just don't know it? :) Nickel

Nickel, I used Yugo when it first came out, several years ago (they were sending out free sample packages then). I used it only for watercolour and it gives very interesting effects because it is non-absorbent, but I never really got into it. I prefer the old, heavy absorbent paper, myself, but I've seen some really beautiful watercolour pieces done on it. Worth a try to play with, I'd say.

Dex - you are doing great and changing technique - I love it.

Thanks Jolanta it is fun to be excited. I missed page 2, Eileen  Welcome to sketch and doodle :D Both you and Dex have good sketches. I love the Elk. Have you heard a live one bay? Erie sound I bet:D Are they love songs or are they hungry when they bay? Snow cool! Dex I love the boats too, neat how you worked them. Sure they can come in handy. Jolanta, I am in Carolina too, it has been really nice weather. I know my thingy says North Pole, that was when I was helping Santa make cookies. I got fired for eating them so sadly bad to work. I am thinking of moving to a tropical island for January. Humm, wonder where? :D Batteries are charging on the camera. Will for sure do something special for you tomorrow. Funny thing, this morning I was making my husband pose in his Russian Fur Hat, talk about a sour puss look I was getting. Bah hum bug, he did not want to, such a good sport and then the camera went kaput. Hadn't feed him breakfast either so he was like an old grizzly bear or a baying elk :D

Tropical Island. Get the biggest suitcase so I can fit in:D Oooooops sorry, cannot go I have people coming hungry for art so I can teach them how to draw straight line and they are doing great:D So you are running away from winter? I am from Poland,we have nice long winter with snow no chance to escape it haha. Here in NC winter is a joke one day spring next day ice and snow only at the special order. Try to draw from life - see what Rose is doing? Wait until your hubby will take a nap and go for it. Cookies - not for me. I have to close my eyes when passing them. No wonder I am tripping over so often:D

Hi everybody - it's very quiet here today. I did some more scribbling and really had fun with it. I can see a lot of lurkers are watching this thread - thank you. I wanted to invite more artists to this thread. I never liked doing any sketching but now when I do them I have to admit I am learning a lot from it. Usually when I was drawing young people faces they all were looking beautiful like dolls not like real people with the character. Since I started to sketch I try to show different personalities and types of people and I just love it. My goal is to practice different expressions and different kinds of people. I learn more than ever - some are copies, some are from my imagination - it really doesn't matter how we do it. Doing it makes the whole difference. So, don't be shy and scribble something and post it here. It helps others to learn how to, and what kind of strokes, and how to show this is older person, how to show different expression and so on.....
This time I was trying red sanquine pastel pencil and I love what it does, especially shading. It's so easy to correct with eraser. Searching for the way to show different characters - never ending journey.
OK. I don't want to monopolize this thread, once I start talking it's hard to quit:D My point is it would be great to have more participants in this forum so we can look and learn.
Hi Rose - I am looking for you all over:wave:

Thanks for the nice comments, Dex.

Thanks, also, Nickel. Nope, I've never heard one bay except on film. I think the baying is mainly done at mating season, but I can't swear to that. I'll have to check in my Encyclopedia of Mammals and get back to you. I drew this from a photo in our local Nature magazine.

Been a longggg day. For Jolanta a quick sketch of my husbands' pear before he eats it.:D Man had me running doing for him all day. Wore me out. Don't take much. Hi Eileen, Hi Dex, Hi Rose, I bought the book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain." by Betty Edwards, I am such a honey, only flipping and looking at the pictures so far, but it certainly seems to be an interesting book. Hi Nickel - your pear is very nice and brings some color here. You managed to immortalize it:clap: Your book is pretty good and it is a believ anybody can learn how to draw by using it, not just flipping through pictures:D I am not any better. I have bunch of great books. Didn't read any from cover to cover but I found out even if I read just one page from time to time I learn something. Try it.I use some of the ideas from this book with my students and they love it especially drawing upside down. So far they don't get dizzy from doing this.
Rose - I have only book. I guess I should get the exercises too. It's hard to stick to one thing that's why I jump from one book to another - maybe this way I can learn more:D

Repair man has already came this morning and fixed so I should thaw out soon.:) Forced hubby to sit for a few minutes and sketch him, but he kept moving, wanting a drink, needing to go to do this or that, such a mess, well will keep that sketch for a later time, made him wear his hat again. He thinks it is funny but I do love the gruff look of a man and the ah ha I caught you in the cookie jar, naughty look or the I just showed up look. We have a good time. What can I say but we are like two kids playing. I like sketching him when he has the sourpus look. May force myself to do some painting today, funny thing to say force, it is the clean-up that stops me. :o

Jolanta, sketching cats, they never stay still enough for me. My favorite cat was renamed last night, his name is now Biscuit. How about a photo of your students upside down drawing:eek: :D :D so funny!

Dex, are you staying out of trouble, of course I know you are:wave:

Rose Your Anita looks like Anita! :) Can't wait to see your painting!

Ok I am off to see where I can go play. Little Later, Nickel:angel:

Hi - welcome to WC. WOW! I like it. Very interesting poses and not easy to do with all the turns. Well done. Please post some more - they help others to learn and maybe more artists will join and exchange ideas. I am always looking for something new and want to try everything:D My favorite is the first one - you got the movement here. Are you working from the model? If yes - lucky you
Keep posting-you will learn much faster by getting feedback and hopefully you will draw more - practice, practice, practice

Jolanta really cool stuff. I love the horse. :)

Dex, nice little faces on the pic. Cool!

Hi Queensoul, nice sketches and doodles! Welcome, I love seeing sketches. I can see I will be able to learn from you!

Dex, you gave your new pencil a workout! Lovely doodles! Again, I am smiling!

Hi Rose, what did you do to Anita?

No doodles for me today. Less you want to count the painting I knocked out this morning. It was a Quickie, really pushing the limits of time, oil and me. Fifty-two weeks from now I may get it right! :)

Hi everybody:wave:
I have to tell you I would never work this hard on drawing without this thread. Thank you:) You just keep me going. It's hard to motivate yourself:(
Dex - I was admiring your sketches in Drawing Forum - I am very impressed. Keep going and show us everything.
Well - this time I used different medium - Derwent drawing pencils. They are just like colored pencils waxy. I love the colors but comparing to pastel pencil it takes much longer to do them, no room for errors (hard to erase) and it's hard to push the darks. For quickies I recommend pastel pencils - easy to shade and easy to erase. Most artists sketch in graphite pencil or charcoal but if you want color try pastel pencils - they are a charm:wink2:
Another thing is when I post something I can see better what's wrong. In this one I need to darken her left hand fingers. This is another good reason to post your work so you can see things better.

It was all done just using the "mouse" and changing color. in the old '95 basic paint...very tedious,,,and had to keep the heel of my hand on the desk to steady the line work,..I spent many hours doing it,,,"rolling eyes" but was determined to try and see if I could.:wink2:

I do acylic...oil painting..digital etc will start a new thread later and show some work ok.Have to pace everything these days "ugh"
Also might want to see some of my work at: ABS-Gallery.com___under "Emerson"--letter 'e" on top of second page.

some I do not care for the way pieces were loaded __left out some details and some were shrunk leaving off sections (they do that)

But at least some are exhibited

Dex your doing great! Love the baby and the wifey! Good Job!

The closest thing in the venus to me is she is eating an apple, which you can't tell from my sketch, it is the tiny dark blob in her left hand. :D

Nickel is always hungry! :D

I most always have spurts of activity and then rest and then I have to eat!

I want to see you painting a picture next! :D

Dex, sounds like to me you got some making up to do ;) with wifey! GGrandson, wow, lucky guy you are!!! that is terrific, really what is more important than family? :D Painting, yes, hmmm! It is liquid pencil:D I have had fun just doing grayscale paintings. No color, just black and whites in oils. They have a charm of their own. Use round brushes to outline and a script liner for details. Maybe a few flats to cover an area.

Dex it is nice you are sketching again! I like looking at all your sketches and doodles. I like the monkeys in the trees. And the guy fishing. Eyes are not so easy to do right either. I had a fun time doing your walking the dog and cow exercises. I never drew a cow so good or so easy. I went looking for a book I have, will doodle some exercises soon and post them this week. Kind of makes me commit to this training. Thanks!
