View Full Version : Weekly Drawing Thread Dec 26-Jan 1st 2006

Welcome to the weekly drawing thread! Each week a new thread with a reference and suggestions for that reference will be posted for anyone to draw and post their results throughout the week. You may follow the weekly suggestion which will be a loose guideline to try or draw and experiment on your own and post your results.
Attempt to keep your work to a sketchbook size and consider attaching your image as a thumbnail to make it easier for us to browse the work. Also, when posting you may consider adding information such as medium, support, dimensions, whether complete or not, so it will be easier for others to comment on your work.
The goal of this thread is open-ended. This means you decide what it is you want out of a weekly challenge. Do you want to just sketch or do you want to become more proficient at drawing, or do you wish to break into other mediums or just play around? It is entirely up to you as the artist. You know your own strengths and weaknesses and you can find them in each reference we are faced with. Practice is where it’s at, just think of this thread as your personal motivator.
Any level of drawing is encouraged to join in!!!
Two Reminders: Different mediums are fine as long as we post preliminary drawings, sketches, and "under-drawing" of the painting, so the discussion on the thread stays relevant...and be sure to post the final painting for comparison of your drawing. Drawing can be crucial to the final product of a painting and we would like to see how!
We accept submissions for reference photos! Feel free to PM reference photos or links to Dee, Jay or Judi, of images out of the image library that you would like to see here or upload your own photos...but be sure to keep in mind of photo quality and choice of reference. I put all submissions in order of their arrival in our PM Inboxes. Have anymore questions regarding this, feel free to PM one of us. Thanks!
This week's image was submitted by Judi from a reference library image by Bevsbigsis that can be found here:http://www.wetcanvas.com/RefLib/showphoto.php?photo=17980&si=snow&what=allfields.
This week's suggestion: This will be your challenge to create the image of snow by using different values from white thru dark greys (or selected colored hues). For the background needles use your medium to create a soft feathered out look to indicate the depth (location) of the background needles and the soft furry tail. Use more defined, and sharper darker values for the needles in the foreground.

I just had to give my Christmas present (60 Faber-Castell Polychromos :D) a go before the start of the colour pencil class. I was surprised at how slow going they were to start off with, but once I'd got some colour down, I liked the delicate build up after that. I've not asked any of my family for colour confirmation, instead going with what I can see, rather than what is really there. I used a lot of blue on the squirrel, for shading mostly.
It's on Bristol Board and measures approx 4" x 5.5"
On the whole I really enjoyed drawing this little fellow and I'm looking forward to the class starting :D

I got acrylic paints for Christmas...so I guess I'll go for graphite...or graphitints!
I also got a hamster in a wheel that you plug into the PC...and every time you type...it whirrs around!
I got a book from the wife called The Practical Art of Chinese Brush Painting by Pauline Cherrett. Looks good but I am Moneting it this week.
DARN YOU, JUDI!!!--you just had to post something that I want to draw--as soon as i finish the line drawing for Camille, I will do this one. To cute to pass up!!!!

Artsuff: Nice colors. Good use of the blue.
And your drawing is top. Shape and shadow are there.
Mine is little bit fatty. Done freehand 8x12" on black canson, with whiite and blue comte... and Black to... to erase some mistakes.
I did not know it was so hard to draw the reverse way, To keep the dark, dark and trying to get some gray and shape with white....

And I almost forget... thanks Judi for this nice animal.
yabby, I like it very much--again with the Canson. My first attempt on black paper was a dog. I have been meaning to go back and redraw it sometime.

Drawing on black must be hard! You've managed to keep his eye curiously beady and his fur beautifully fluffed up :)

Although--for christmas her and I spent the day watching Korean horror movies, Whispering corridors, The wishing stairs, dark waters and A Tale of Two Sisters--she read the subtitles for me except for Dark Waters which was dubbed!

Lovely charcoal Fish. I hope you'll be a regular here on the WDT. :)
What Dee? Not got that acrylic done yet?? I know you'll od a fabulous job as always.
Yes, JayD, I'd safely say your artistic block has crumbled. To be replaced by drawing overload. :D
My little tree rat is done and I'll post him in the morning. I took the photo then the batteries in the camera died so I have to charge them.
Hi Judi  Its hard when your son has to leave again, isn't it? I'll bet you have had a wonderful time while he was there though.

Alison - super CP squirrel! (I just sharpened all my new tin of CPs - took hours and many of them were broken inside so I ended up with half length pencils that haven't even been used yet! )
Fish - great work and Welcome to the WDT!

Hi all, the motiv is very god, and you have all done well
Al - wish I could use my CP´s like that
Yab - the white on black looks very god
Fish - real nice soft tones
Present - Fantastic realism
Jeanette - soft and cute
Dee - I like your fur
Mine is done with mechanical pencil 0.5 HB and pencil B on printer paper
The snow and needles were hard

Anita, you should return your new tins and get another--cp breaks because of rough handling--coloured pencils are like packages of eggs--handle with care. I did my drawing last night and am not going to post it--I am going to redraw it. It looked good while I was drawing it and then the scanner cast a new light on it and made me rethink the whole thing.
Your squirrell is fabulous. VERY SOFT!!
Bonnie, how is it that everty thing you draw looks sexy--and I am going to pick up a box of those ticonderogas--I really do like the effects you are getting!
Oh, Jeanette, he is adorable!!

Okay, count me in on the "Darn You, Judi!" Club". I guess I am back in this week because this guy's just too hard to say no to. I will have to post mine tomorrow; by the time I finish this there won't be enough light to take a picture. What I was working on for 101 Class 7 can wait...
Alison - You are quick and you still did a super job. What a cool Christmas present!
Yabby - I love yours! I've never been brave enough to attempt anything on black paper, but you were certainly up to the challenge!
Fish - That's charcoal? He's adorable! Can't wait to see your next sketch.
Anita - Yours is so sweet! Lovely fur. You have made this look effortless.
Jeanette - Yours, too. How do you guys do that fur??? It looks so fluffy and real!
Deirdre - :D Funny lady! For a "quickish" one that's pretty darn good.
Bonnie - That fur does NOT look like leather to me. (I can read his mind; he's planning the next big raid on my bird feeder.)
Karsten - You also did a great job. I have to say I'm very impressed with your handling of the snow, shadows and pine needles.

Hi everyone,
I really love everyone's squirrels.
Fish, welcome! Yours looks great! I love the effect of the charcoal.
Anita, I really like yours. The fur looks fantastic!
Yours is beautiful, Jeanette! He looks very soft.
Dee, yours is fantastic! He has a very mischievous gleam in his eye.
Bonny, yours is beautiful! I love the colors.
Karsten, yours is fantastic. I love the way you rendered the snow.
I'm afraid this little guy really messed with me. I thought he looked really easy, but I had a horrible time with him. Did anyone else think that he looked just like a weeble? I kept thinking "weebles wobble but they don't fall down" the whole time I was drawing him. Anyway, here are my two attempts, one on charcoal paper, the other on bristol. Both with graphite.

Anne - Thank you for that Weebles reference...you know that silly little "wobble but they don't fall down" song is going to be stuck in my head for like, forever now.
I like your little guy - both attempts. The cuteness factor is definitely there in both of them. I'm still struggling with my first one, and yes, he's kind of driving me nutty, even before the Weebles got on my brain.:D

Here is my squirrel - sorry it isn't a good picture, but as good as the light will probably get today. As you can see, I'm still struggling with the background, as always.:o
Boy, you guys are kicking some serious squirrel today!
Annie your squirrel looks very demure--almost flirtatious. Great drawing!
UH OH, Judi--I turning into the grasshopper--better get to work. Yours is coming along really well!.
Hi, Helen--welcome!! I dont know you but the drawing is certainly worth the comment. Its a very nice sketch. Great work!
Mike, is that the graphitint pencils? I have those and new derwent sets that I have been aching to try out--that's a great squirrel you have there. Bravo!
Dex--nice work there--I meant to say this but you should take a look at Jet's work--I know you too are in differnet parts of the world but you both carry similar styles. I think your sketching looks a bit looser but the styles are uncanny. I have been following your sketch thread as well. Outstanding!

wow! that squirrel is multiplying in a hurry...lol! something in the water? :D
thanks for the comments everyone. :D It was Derwent drawing pencils (the earth tone ones) i used, not the graphitints, although i do have a small set of them i used once and made a mess...lol!
Alison... if this is your warmup BEFORE the CP class, i can't wait to see what you can do after the class...lol! terrific!
Yabby... Nice one! It is a little disconcerting working light on dark at first, but i really enjoy it now. i look for opportunities to draw that way now.
Fish... good work! you have a nice touch with charcoal. is that willow charcoal?
Anita... excellent! your tonal values are right on. good strong lighting.
Jeanette... a beauty! he looks just so... cuddly...lol!
Deirdre... awesome! great job on the fur.
Bon... looks great! the fur doesn't look like leather at all. just a lush, velvety fur coat.
Karsten... great! looks very comfortable in his natural setting. i had lots of trouble with the snow too.
Anne... nicely done! good strong lighting. i like the crop too.
Helen... great sketch! values are right on.
Brenda... good one! i've got a four hour drive coming up too. i should try that... wonder if they mind that i'll be driving at the same time ...lol!
Judi... wonderful start. i see you're being your meticulous self again...lol! always pays off in the end though.

Alison - the colors here add to the cuteness of the squirrel.
Yabby - I had a really hard time I tried to reverse the drawing, too. But it does give such a good effect.
Fish - good to see new faces. Nice job with the fur.
Anita - great job, you made him so charming. I remember when you said you Couldn't Do fur. Look at you now.
Jeanette - your soft blended background brings out the fur on him.
Dee - great rendition, as always.
Bon - luscious colors on that lovely animal.
Karston - he really has an eye out for anyone who might take his food.
Anne - I think the second one has more texture than the first, but that is good, too.
Mike - I know what you mean about the different texture of those pencils. But the result here is fine, makes me wish I done mine that way.
Helen - you did capture the cuteness of this little critter.
Brenda - I think your squirrel has been raiding too many feeders, he is fatter than any others, but still good fur.
Judi - you have so much patience, getting each detail just right.
Annie - glad you posted, this is cute even if your not satisfied with the light.
Jay - I don't see any problem at all. Mixing media makes this very detailed and clear. Glad you are back drawing, your work is an inspiration to us all. I know you had some burn out with all those classes, but so many people benefited from it.
My contribution, maybe a little weak in the tail, now that I have seen some very bushy ones.

Helen- Good to work on the values-you did a nice job!
Annie-LOL she does look flirtacious! Love her!
Ty JayD, He is coming along great!! Now that is mixed media!:) I especially like the look you are getting for the shadows on the snow. I finally got some sepia ink today. This would have been perfect for this, but too late-as in time.
-but ahead of you yet grasshopper (for now-I'll probably get up tomorrow and you'll be done)
Hi Connie-I don't think your tail looks weak at all. Really nice work!
Brenda-I like your cp a lot! The colors you used for the fur are great!!
Tyree! That is soo cool what you have done!!!!!!!

WOW! Miss a day.. Miss a lot. Guess I gotta check in more often on this thread huh?
Fantastic weebles... I mean squirrels everyone!
Brenda - Hi neighbor! I used to run a route for FedEx in your lovely little town!
Beckett- I think you were the one that asked... Yes, it is willow charcoal. I love the way it shades and blends, it is extremely difficult to store though.
Looking forward to more posts!
Connie, glad to see you back in action too. I like your squirrel just fine--I have eaten squirrels with less tail.
Brenda--I like the quick strokes that you are doing with the colored pencil--are you using the side of the pencil in the background.
Tyree! That has such style--it belongs in a storybook!
Judi--you will be ready to leave when you can snatch the stone out of my hand....er...would you give me back the stone please!!! You're blowin' me away girl!!!!
OK, this is my final squirrel installment--lets call him finished:

Hi
Nice choice for this weeks drawing thread Judi, cute enough to encourage me to try it.
I have been watching the weekly drawing thread every week and feel very humbled at all the beautiful drawings that gets whipped up in a matter of minutes (I know not really minutes) it just feels like that to me. Well I have finally plucked up enough courage to do this one this week.
So here we go.

Greywolf-That is neat-how did you do that? (I have PSP8)
Thanks:D ... I duplicated the picture three times, then left the original alone at the bottom. The second layer I applied colored pencil too, and changed the contrast darker, and then changed the mode to overlay. The top layer I used edges/find all and then mode to overlay. You have to play with the transparency of the top two layers to get it to look the way you want.
Doesn't look like I am going to get time to draw the cute little feller...
The publisher just told us we only have until December 31st to get out the
last three chapters on a book we are doing the graphics for, so...
late nights, and late mornings for me!! (and lots of coffee!!)

Trying to keep up around here is really getting to be a race!!:p
Jay D I really like the way his fur looks..the variations in color and lengths make it very real. I sorta used the side point of the pencil, not the entire length of the exposed color. (We used to just put 'em on a skewer and roast 'em. Usually when we were camping and fish weren't biting.)
Tyree I agree it has a very story book feel to it..very soft and cuddly.:cat:
Judi I love what you are doing with the sepia! Can't wait to see it finished!:)
Greywolf sorry you can't join in this week but maybe next time!!
