This is a very small image I have been working on as a exercise to relax a bit after work. it is a small canvas 500pi X 380pi X 72dpi, the photo is1680pi X 1277pi. I am posting a screenshot so you can see how I work as well as the WIP full size. I had toincrease the compression so may have lost detail.

This is coming along great Edie. Pretty kitty too. Don't you have a hard time working on such a small canvas though?

Nice one Edie. There's something about cats that makes you want to paint them. I suppose they always look as if they're posing :)

Yes I usualy do work much larger but I didn't want to take the time it would on a large of of the cat, too many details lol. I also have many un finish large canvases on the go and just wanted a small one to relax with for a few minutes after work , my hands are a bit sore these days so can't work on anything for very long.

Thanks for the compliments, Duchess is a lovely tiny old cat, too bad her eyes arent open they are a lovely blue, I may see if I have a ref. photo of her in the same pose with them open and change that in this image.

Ah, she looks so comfortable. Surprising choice for BG colors given the photo, but it looks nice and cozy.:wink2:

I so agree! Cats have a unique beauty of their own! This looks like it is relaxing to paint and what a wonderful way to relax!

Thanks for the comments folks! The BG green will likely ge all worked out it was just there to destroy the white and to key the greens and rust off.

Here is where my Duchess painting is at this point in time. It has been fun to find I can paint things I never thought I could, and doing it digitall has made me long for my brushes and paint hopefully I'll be able to try them again soon.http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/26-Dec-2005/34007-Duchess_010.jpg

LOVE it! Even the background color might work if you lowered the intensity.

Looks very nice! We have 2 cats and they sleep too much! LOL! They love to be the noturnal animals they are. Lightening the BG would put more focus on Duchess. Just a thought. I like it! :)

I haven't added much to Duchess, I have been working on the background. I used a mask and removed the old one and added a layer behind the cat and have been using a captured dab brush I downloaded called Tree and Bush Dabs I'm using Bush 4, and Just add water to blend. It is far from finished, I don't plan to create the impression of the tapastry not replication. As usual I'm still having a bit of a problem with tone and value as I sometimes still think in natural colour instead of RBG.

Coming along great, Edie. How about some stronger contrasts on Dutchess?

It is time to call finished to this, so here it is. I got frustrated with the background trying to paint it to get the colour changes I wanted etc. so I applied some effects to the layer in Painter and pushed it back. I may have overworked the cat which is always a danger when you get to fussin'. lol.

It was brought to may attention that Duchess seems to float, so I added a bit of shadow to anchor her to the chair.

This is the fullsize image.

Edie, that shadow worked a charm! When the view is globally fuzzy, it usually indicates distance and that's why Dutchess was floating.

Thanks Skinny for your comment. On another forum it was suggested I clone back some of the forground from earlier steps and I think it has help, but this is definitly the last one LOL!

Nice finish! I like the way you treated the BG. Makes Duchess the focal point yet gives a wholeness to the image. Thanks for sharing your wip and the finished product! :)
