Hi, here's one from life. The kid only cheered up when I let him loose with the logo.

Nice work Jon, but I think your spelling is a bit off ... "read". :D

A lovely portrait. I love the obvious "from life" quality in the expression. As a recovering portrait painter, my experience was too often that parents expected a photograph-like smile. Sometimes hard to convince them that a portrait was a different thing!

What a gorgeous portrait. I didn't know you do pastel work too! I love the way you always let others get involved in the painting process somehow. He must have had a blast being able to add to the logo. I'm impressed that he sat still long enough for you to do that. I tried getting my daughter to pose and it was a lost cause. Very good skin color you've got there too.

Wow, when I first saw this I thought "that artist is phenominal". Then I realized the kid didn't paint the portrait. I still think that the artist is phenominal though. Great expression on the boys face.

Cecelia, Thank you, "Recovering"? I hope you're well now
:)
You could do several sketches, of the sitter. One being what the client wants and a couple that you want to do. Often the clients prefer the one(s) that you choose to do.
If they want a photograph then have your camera ready.

Hi Jamie, Thank you.

I like working with pastels and if the weather allows they are great for working outdoors.
I always encourage people to have a go, it can be the ice-breaker that sets them off to work from life.
I find it a struggle to do family it might be the way we perceive them that stops us from being objective.

Thanks Donna, They can't spoil anything as it's always possible to change if they get too expressive.

Thank you Larry, I voted yes for this forum for the same reasons. I just hope it doesn't encourage people to stay indoors too long.

Thank you Dan, I was impressed with the way that he to grips with the logo. I told him that I couldn't draw the logo at the outset and would get him to do it when I'd finished sketching. This gave him something to think about while he was standing for the pose, hence the expression.

Should read "Got to grips"

I've spent the evening with Madam Cote de Rhone and I don't think I will be divulging any more limner secrets this evening.

Good night my friends and a "Happy Solstace" to you all.
