Messing around (literally - you should have seen my hands!) with pastels again. Trying to really punch the color. From live model at Monday drawing group:

Wow this is wonderful! Look at all those gorgeous colours! I love the richness of the background, too.

I'd be interested to hear about your technique on this one. What was the surface? How did you start?

Great stuff! http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Thanks Sandra!

It's about 14" x 18" on blue-gray Canson paper. I started lightly with charcoal, and laid in some darks very broad and loose with dark pastels. My mentor, Stuart, told me to spark up the color, so I did, just put in some real bright ones and worked warms and cools and local colors over it. It was fun, but I was a total mess afterward.

This is the MOST beautiful work I've seen yet here at WC, and there have been some real beauties. As per Michaels thread in the debate forum, I wish there were a word to describe my delight in viewing this.
Deliciously rich and satisfying. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif
Extremely nice work, Ruth. Frame it and show at the BIG shows, and win some money!
I bet even Daniel is Greene with envy. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif

I just found this forum and this is the first sample of the work here that I've viewed. It's an excellent portrait! Done in one sitting? It would have taken me a week to finish him. The colors are soooo vibrant! The metal reflections on the glasses are just right. I'll have to practice before I post anything of my own so I'm not laughed out of here.

Ruth:

My gosh, woman, if this is how you are "fooling around" with pastels nowadays, I'm going to throw mine away!

Darn good work!

You and Sandra and I are going to have to be the "group" gang!
I love the wet look you got out of those buttery sticks.
Nice energy through color use with a rainbow of choices, but not overwhelming or muddy.
That is what makes this stuff so great!
Lovely.

Ruth,
As you know, I do pastel Portraits, but NO WAY do I use such beautiful colours as these, I tend to stick to a large variety of skin tones, but after viewing this, I will definately try some bolder colours.
Your still my number 1
