First Soft Pastel- Unfinished

Hello. This is my first SOFT pastel. (I"ve done one oil pastel) I'm not finished with it, and I am having problems making the light on the ground lay flat... any suggestions? I'm so excited about this medium! I went to Craft Warehouse last night and picked up the cheapest box of pastels I could find. There are only 24 colors. The only black paper I could find was small sheets of card stock! Ha Ha! It has a completely smooth surface...is that what regular pastel paper has? Anyway, here it is.....

I would like to add a bench in there somewhere but I'm not sure where to place it...any other suggestions?

Hi Samantha...I am new to pastel, but I have to say that this relaxes me. I feel like walking and seeing more. Thanks for posting. gloria

A lovely first pastel! To make things appear "flat" look. Flat is flat. Follow what you see not what you think you see. The light and boyancy of what you felt and thought had you bounce the light upon the land. Look at the path, and lay-in the colors along with the value of the colors that you really see.

You have a very nice handling of the paint. I can see your "handwriting" in the strokes. It is just the control and emulating of the values and colors that you need.

Your sensitivity is to the subject and to the light is evident. Work on the middle and darkest tones and you'll have it!!
