There is a fine thread in the marine forum on how different lenses can distort a photo. Definetly worth taking a look.

John, this is a great referral. The author explains and demonstrates it well and moreover is himself both a photographer and a painter.
I sure appreciate seeing this as I have felt I was fighting an uphill battle trying to get folk to understand they can't just take a photo at face value and copy it into their painting but rather must understand what they are seeing.
I was caught as well with my last pastel (The Young Fancy Dancer) I was tweaking him a bit and realized his foot was too narrow from top to sole; nevermind that I graphed it exactly from the photo reference. The photo had altered the perspective ever so slightly. I made the change and the foot now reads accurately. It's going up against some top notch work in a show judged by top notch eyes, so though the error in perspective was small it was important that it be corrected.
