Ok People , I said this was going to be silly and just a fun (I hope ) thing.
This Idea is not my original Idea . It has been around for quite a while and there is no copyright on the Idea nor on my reference drawing which is my original drawing. .....SO... Here is the plan ... You may download my ref. drawing and use that or do your own drawing from it .(just so we are all doing the same thing.)

* First we trace our hand.

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/12-Oct-2005/28847-Image1.jpg

* Second , we embellish a titch

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/12-Oct-2005/28847-Image2.jpg

* Third, we throw on some paint and 'Voila' a Chicken

For Char and anyone else who has their drawing done ,here is my first steps for painting the finger feathers. I will tell you what pigments/brands I used but use what ever pigments you normally use. Also if you want to do loose wet in wet please do so.

Using Windsor green ( blue shade) and prussian blue .

1... At first I was going to do wet in wet http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/13-Oct-2005/28847-5.jpg But then decided not to, so I did this
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/13-Oct-2005/28847-6.jpg
Then just kept adding wash of these two colours til' I got this look.

JJ and Judy , Great chickens, love these guys .

JJ well done on the tail feather painting. I will post step two in just a wee while.

Jutta Wow you were quick . What size is your painting ?. Looks good and I like the addition of the grasses on the right . Since you have already got this far I will give you the final step which is to take a graphite pencil ( I used a # H , which is fairly hard and was sharpened to a sharp point) and out line the whole chicken and the lines around the beak/eyes and the red/orange/yellow feathers plus do the legs Don't do the eggs. When you get the outlining done how about posting it again but in a close up so we can have a better look.

Nacre
10-14-2005, 07:57 PM
Next step.... Do a yellow wash over the head and the first feathers as shown below. I used windsor yellow

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/14-Oct-2005/28847-9.jpg

When dry do a wash of red ( I used windsor red) over the comb on top the head ,around the eye and that do-thingy ( no idea what it's called) under the chin. As the red dries blot in a few places so the yellow shows through

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/14-Oct-2005/28847-10.jpg

When that is dry .. give the beak, head and the first layer of feathers plus a stripe on his/her hip a wash of burnt sienna leaving the top of the head quite yellow. I did a bit of outlining here with a # H pencil and with some dark did the pupil.
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/14-Oct-2005/28847-12.jpg

Nacre
10-14-2005, 08:07 PM
Next I put Alternating washes of windsor red and alizarine crimson over the next layer of feathers . going over some areas 2 or 3 times to give a variety and depth of colour and leaving some yellow show through.

Your Hen/Rooster is coming along great JJ. We will do some tweaking ( scrubbing out ) and some outlining of the feathers at the final stage to make him/her look finished.

Next step

Using sap green ( you may use any light green you like. I like sap green for an under painting for greens as it gives a nice glow under darker greens especially with a tad of scrubbing off of top darker layers.) Anyway ,
#1. give the rest of the unpainted body a wash of the light green of your choice .
#2 . to the leftover sap green wash .. I added enough Windsor green and a titch of windsor red to make a dark green and put down layers of the dark, leaving areas of light trying to give the appearance of feathers.( use your favorite dark green mix if you like )

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/15-Oct-2005/28847-14.jpg

Keep laying on the darker green til you get the look you want . Oh ! you could give the legs/feet a wash of yellow if you havent already done so

Even tho I am posting a lot of the steps before some are starting ,do post your in between steps and work at your own pace, I want to get all the steps fairly close to the front so those that are starting later don't have too much trouble finding them in among the chit chat. I used M.Grahams.. Sap Green and Pthalo Green, The sap Green I dulled with Cad Red.

I looked at the colour charts online and thought my M/G Cad red was closest to Winsor Red.

For the tail feathers I used M/G Prussian blue and Pthalo Green..

My Yellow is Azo yellow as again I don't have winsor yellow..

EDIT:

I also used Art Spectrum Burnt Sienna as it is a luscious orange colour.. :) M/G's tends to be a little dull..;)

The background

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/16-Oct-2005/28847-16_A.jpg

#1..wet the backgroung at the top around the chicken then drop in some burnt sienna so that the top edges are lightly coloured and fades to white aroung the chicken
#2.. then wet the bottom part leaving the eggs dry and drop in Bs again keeping it light around the eggs and quite dark around the feet and right side. I put a few grains of coarse ( Kosher) salt plus sprinkled reg. table salt into the dark pigment while still damp near the feet and the rt. side only , to get some texture.

If you havent already done so ,paint the legs/feet yellow and add BS shading. I did some outlining on the legs already with a # H graphite pencil.

Nacre
10-16-2005, 02:27 PM
The eggs

#1.. paint your choice of yellow around the eggs . let dry. start forming the shape of the eggs with a blue/purple wash. I used prus.blue and Aliz.crim.
#2..add a titch of burnt sienna around eggs.dry then using BS paint the straw/ ?
#3.. finish shading eggs and do any adjusting to colour aroung eggs.

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/16-Oct-2005/28847-17.jpg http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/16-Oct-2005/28847-19.jpg

The finish

#1.. With a small ( #1 ) I did a bit of wiping out on the Finger feathers to create some highlights.
#2.. And last of all with the #H pencil outlined the fethers on the body and aroung the chicken.

Jutta and JJ your chickens look so beautifull...
JJ IMHO you have to cut your finger nails :D...

Pearl wonderful and very clear instructions... but I already did mine this morning without reading them... I just used your drawing but I printed it a bit larger and the tail of my chicken is a little bit out of the paper... it is on 7.5"x11" Bockingford paper with Russian art-gamma student pan paints... IRL the colors are much darker but the scanner made them lighter...

Thanks to both of you for 'painting' along. And it is interesting to see the different styles in all three finished Chickens.

Well I tried to outline with the HB pencil but it didn't show up.
So I tried to outline it with B/S and it didn't show up.
I am thinking of outlining it with black felt tip pen but that would look too much..:(

I have given him to Alan for his Birthday present because Alan thought he was sooo cute. His words. But I can still change it ...

What do I do????????????

I'm barely started. My drawing is finished, so I will scan and post:

p.s. please forgive darkness.. I had to emphasize the dark because the drawing was light....

p.s. again.... I twisted my fingers so the feathers went more toward the back....

Sorry JJ , I thought you weren't sure if you wanted to out line or not . I agree that a black pen wouldn't look good. You could use a softer pencil or use a thin brush and mix a dark that you would be happy with and do it that way .

Vasil .. yes do try a coloured pencil , Just out line enough to accent the division between the layer of feathers it doesn't have to be a heavy outline. But as beauty is in the eye of the beholder just do what looks good to you on your chicken. looking forward to you posting the outlined finish.

As this chicken now belongs to Alan and he likes him forget about him and paint it again, .Good idea .. and paint him the way You want, let your artistic licence run riot. :p . The fun thing about this guy is there are many ways to render him. Using non toxic and non staining paint it is fun to have children paint their hand and then press it on the paper leaving an imprint and then add the head/legs etc. If you do paint him again do post him here so we can see.

Vasil , your chicken looks even nicer with the outlining. I used a fairly hard ( #h) and with a very fine point so not much graphite got on the paper , also I didn't press too hard . It was just enough to make a finished look. I do think a very sharp coloured pencil would work very well

JJ!

Actually Lyn that is a tough ? as this is just a fun painting and no right or wrong way to do it and not meant to be realistic by any means I expected ( and got ) a variety of styles and a few personal touches ,( like your wonderful worm) I think you did a great job of his feathers and your FG texture is very well done and adding the worm and leaving out the eggs was a neat touch. Now that you are painting why don't you do another one and do it the way you usually paint . Just have fun with it and then post it here so we can see it. OK ! all this rambling is my way of saying that he is perfect just the way he is and you needn't do anything else , but JJ 's suggestion is a good one as a shadow line would ground him .

I can't find a white egg here. They are all a nice warm brown colour. Maybe someone could break a few eggs and post a reference photo. I can see you are going to get sucked into this one Aunty P:evil::D

OK Robyn , you have two choices  :) #1..as an artist you just break a brown one then visualize that it is white . very good training for the eye.

#2.. You can check out the image library here at wet canvas and you will not only find white eggs but broken shells and probably even a opened raw egg.

And for a wee bit of help from me here is some eggs that I have painted so you can see some watercolour ones . Hope this helps . So glad you are doing this Robyn and if you need more help just SHOUT. Also post your progress so I can see how you are coming along.

I receive the Painter's Keys twice weekly e-newsletter from Robert Genn, a WC! member. I've written him several times and been published a couple of time. Today, he published my letter AND, of all things, my Secondhand Dandy painting, done for fun and put on my website for the same reason!! LOL It is up there with paintings of eagles, and herons, etc.!
To see my letter and Secondhand Dandy amidst birds of a feather,Click here! (http://www.painterskeys.com/clickbacks/bald-eagle.asp)

Pearl, we've made him/her famous! :D LOL

  This picture in my opinion is true art in progress. You took a simple hand drawing and turned it into a beautiful work of art. It started out as one thing then ended up as another thing. I too have these inspirations. I may start out a picture with one or two items in the seen but soon finding myself adding more as I go. It is as though some invisable hand is guiding you in the back ground. Great imagination is what is needed here on this site.
