I can't understand how raw sienna functions on the Backhaus palette. One can get browns by mixing yellow, red (that is "orange"), and blue in various proportions. It would be uncharacteristic, I think, for him to have a "convenience" pigment on this palette just to avoid mixing. So I'm probably missing some essential purpose. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks.

hi
raw sienna mixed with ultra blue makes beautiful grays. it is also useful to modify many of the other hues, and makes good beiges mixed with white and a smidge of something else, depending on if you want something warm or cool.
you really have to fool around with it to see what you can do.
hope that helps!

The Backhaus palette is the palette formerly used at the backhaus (german)
which means something like bakery house. This is the little house where people used to come together once a week to produce their stone hard bread.

The raw siena was traditionally used as cover over the burned black areas
on the top of the bread..

P.S: I believe that everybody needs some earth colors, which cannot be mixed. I never met someone who could mix ocre for example, of course you can mix something that looks similar to ocre, but there is still a difference.
And when you start mixing the mixed ocre with a mixed green you get only a miximix warm green :music: .

Oh I forgot their is also a guy called Ken Backhaus or so :D

Backhaus pallet: Alizarin crimson, permanent rose, lemon yellow, raw sienna, ultramarine blue and ivory black.

One of the PA people here at WC went to a workshop by Kenn Backhaus, and that is the pallet he recommends using.

Diyart, LOL.

All comments are my own, and made through either my own ignorance, or failure to understand. If any brilliant wisdom or insight does come out, I give God the thanks.... :D
Sorry too much Bordeaux for lunch today..
But seriously I think that somehow one has to get an earth pigment on the palette.
