This is gutsy , not sure if its going to work , so thought you could stress with me . My issues are , is it going to be too dark , how am I going to get the images to blend with the rest without getting cheesy and the dealing with the grass . This could be really cool or crappy . So here we go ...Its on 1/2 sheet fabriano hp bright white ........TC

This is going to be so interesting......watching along with Pam.
I don't think it will be too dark either.

I was wondering how you did these cool paintings! So now I am going to plop myself down and find out. :D

09-25-2005, 03:41 AM
This is going to be wonderful, Terry.

I hope you don't mind, I put a newline in between each image as they were distorting the window by going off the page.

09-25-2005, 04:19 AM
The way you have painted the goose is just so beautiful, I look forward to seeing it progress!

09-25-2005, 08:32 AM
Terry, I would just LOVE to see your paintings IRL!!! I love the composition... your drawing is excellent... I wondered about those dark grasses until I scrolled down to see the fabulous feathering of your first goose... There's no way this will be cheesy...

09-25-2005, 08:40 AM
This looks like a beautiful drawing geting magical treatment.... I can't wait to see it emerge.

09-25-2005, 09:02 AM
WOWEEE! Love the colours on that goose!!!

09-25-2005, 01:19 PM
Oh good, another one of your gorgeous "tree creatures".
Looks already like this will be my favorite one. I LOVE the geese, very nice round shapes.
This is going to be a real treat :music:

Thank you everyone ......Doug , I would never mind ....Char , the grasses I refer to are at their feet , the bg are treetrunks ( my interpretation sp?) skinny twiggy trees . I hate bg ...took me 3 days ..not going for realism , more of an exageration of it . :o

By the way my husband took this shot of the geese in our front yard ( the beach ), we live on the beach and they are actually standing on a giant beached halfcut log thats been their forever , it is starting to grow trees . Anyway that is why I included marine images in the lower drawing . Its not a tree but it was a tree :).

What a feast for my eyes, the colors in the goose feathers are spectacular.
Your sense of color ,compisition and imagination just astounds me girl!!
I also admire your clean, concise, brushwork.

09-25-2005, 05:47 PM
Can't wait to see this one done! It is looking pretty good even now...

Amazing. Your geese are beautifully rendered. This is not cheesy. It is perfect.

Very cute Doug :)...June , got to tell my hubby....Ruth , thanks so much , just takes a bit longer than most ....Thanks Christie for nice words ...Tom , thanks , ahhh perfect ? hmmm...the cheesy may come in when I do the bottom half .

You guys are all so great ....but no matter how well my rendering or colors are its the finish thats got to work ...My paintings may look good close up but they look like a blob from a distance , need to solve that , hoping the vibrant colors will be the ticket .

Not a whole lot more done ..I'm a slow worker

09-26-2005, 05:09 PM
This is amazing to watch this unfold. I love the colors in the geese, and that background is perfect for them. Looking forward to the finish.

09-26-2005, 08:05 PM
wow wow! i came in here for some inspiration and these geese are the most inspiring thing i've seen all day! i have no idea how you do this but consider me knocked down with a beautifully painted goose feather!

09-26-2005, 09:31 PM
Oh my gosh how did I miss this??

WOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Shirley...BG was a bear ..looks horrible without the mat , still needs more work ...some issues that don't show in the photo

Leah....Thanks so much ...getting tired of those feathers right about now , a 2 gooser would have been plenty

JJ !! ....You're here , yeah !!!!!!!!

OK ... another update ....these guys are not done yet , have plans to go back and rehash some darks , later after I work on the image below..bit off more than I can chew with this 1/2 sheet

09-29-2005, 06:29 PM
I will add my WOW's here as well!!!

terrific Terry.....very illustrative

I've painted geese before - those feathers can be very tedious

speaking of those feathers....they are glowing!!

I am a little concerned about the necks of the geese....from where I'm sitting (could be different in real life) they blend in too much with the background.

anxiously waiting for the next installment!!

09-29-2005, 09:22 PM
What a great idea.....b/g is super and the feathering ....what can I say....geese done a new way....
As em pointed out, maybe just a little lighter in the necks......on the other hand, why not blend in with Mother Nature....

09-29-2005, 09:54 PM
Yep I am here, and enjoying immensly..:)

09-30-2005, 12:19 PM
Thanks Em , The necks are part of the bg issue I'm going to work on , need to brighten some of the colors in those areas and hopefully will improve neck visuals .

Thanks Brian also , when I finish the lower area I'll get a better feel to tweak the bg for the necks

JJ ...feel my pain ...will ya ? More fun doing Trees .

Sooo gorgeous!! I'm loving every posts on this one.
The colours are to die for .... oh to have a coat like this ...

I admire your patience, Terry!!

Back for my third look, Terry. Impatient, I am. Love the luminous colour on the legs!

T Christensen
10-01-2005, 08:43 PM
This is taking forever ....a whole day of painting and all I got done was the bottom left corner ......

Thanks Jutta ..as you can tell my patience is fading

Robyn Thanks ..good to know about the legs , trying to decide whether to leave them so they show up against dark bg

JJ ..you are a doll ... now my back is tired :( from sitting in a bad chair all day .

Man , I hope I finish it this week ....need a break

I kinda quit on the geese , needed a change and wanted to figure out how I was going to treat the bottom

10-02-2005, 10:31 AM
Oh, Terry... please don't lose heart now... My gosh this is beautiful... beaming boatloads of moral support and cyber elastic to keep you going...

10-02-2005, 10:45 AM
I know, I know, but there's no rush.....we can all wait.....well....maybe not JJ ;-)
Great b/g.....Fabriano has its qualities....

10-02-2005, 03:09 PM
WOW! Love the patterns made by the feathers on the geese, and how you're repeating the stripes in the foreground water. I know you'll get through the frustration and bring this to a fantastic finale!

T Christensen
10-02-2005, 04:39 PM
Thanks Char , Brian and....Ruth , your comment made me aware of something , I was not intending to depict water in a realistic sense , its actually wood grain , kinda  , from the log they are standing on . So I'm thinking I may need to adjust a bit and would like everyones input if possible ..

I have a flying heron drawn in , outlined ...tough to see

To get the sense that the grass is growing over the images I'm think I'm going to remove it , did this in photoshop ...

I will lose the heron but I think it will be better .........TerryC

10-02-2005, 07:14 PM
WOWeeeeeeeeee Look at that glow on their legs.. :)

10-02-2005, 07:40 PM
Hi, I seldom comment as I don't feel good enough to add or subtract anything from something this wonderful... here it comes... BUT, if you are concerned about the necks
blending in with the bg, how about a very light glaze to look foglike on the bg.
Hope no one will be upset with my suggesting this in this forum. I am looking forward to how you work it all out. I think it is a very pleasing and distinctive style.

JJ
chipsworth ......You can suggest all you want , love the help and glad you came . I assume you are talking about using white , which I have done before , but I think I've got too much paint on this bg now to add that much water . I did do a little highlight to the neck on the one and that helped .

This may be a better look.....I got 2 options , work on that highlighted edge on the neck some more or lighten the bg area and darken the edge of the neck , which would remove the highlight

10-02-2005, 10:53 PM
Gessh Terry, how do you find all the time?????
This is really looking great....I also like how you have used the same grays in the log down below. And the colors you have used on the feathers is really wonderful...I would have never thought to use such colors on a goose. Guess that makes you the professional!
Glad to also see you using a half sheet.....I know it seems big but you have it under control!

10-03-2005, 09:02 AM
Hi Terry... perhaps you should rethink losing the heron... put him in there, but allow some of the grass to grow over him... I love this piece...

10-03-2005, 06:18 PM
Hi,again, I think your idea of highlights on the neck could really work well, when you
look at the white of the body on the birds this would fit in and keep them in one plane
while your bg would remain in another. Great idea! I can't wait to see more.

10-03-2005, 09:26 PM
I would finish it forst before tweaking. I know it is hard to get a proper pic of the painting, and a half sheet squished into 500x600 wont do the painting any justice either.. ;)

10-03-2005, 10:25 PM
OH MY...OH MY!!! Terry this is STUNNING! Those beautiful glowing colors are remarkable and your drawing skills are excellent....I'm pulling up a chair... ;)

Like Char said.

I'm loving this painting!!

btw. the geese are leaving for the south, the night before last we heard them fly by our house.
i love this time of year!!!!

Jolynn....Time? I'm not the one raising 2 kids and going to school :) , at my age its about time . Thanks for the cheers ........

Char ....You don't know how close I came to rid the heron until I got your post , so I left him ....OK?

Chipsworth...thanks , I need the backup for my decisions here ..will do when I tweak

JJ......Hugs , lots of tweaking coming at the end

Darla ...Thanks , wow ...glad to see ya

Jutta ....This is my favorite time also . We have hundreds of geese hanging down on the beach right now ..they fly over the house like a dark cloud and poop all over my deck and furniture , good thing it rains here . Thanks so much for the merit point and stars , my first ever .

June ..You keep me going ..push my buttons...keep my battery charged ... another 5 stars , better than chocolate .

I think I'm over the frustration part ...feel better ...from here on it will be easier . have to quit for the day , have to take some prints in to get framed . Tomorrow will be paint all day , slave day , probably won't even shower , hope I remember to brush my teeth...:o..I can do that , hubby out of town

10-04-2005, 09:16 PM
*sniff... sniff* hmmmm... wonder what that unpleasant odour is... ?????

I'm glad you kept the heron!!!

5 Stars and a Merit from me 2...

10-05-2005, 11:44 AM
I love how the bottom is echoing patterns and colours of the upper levels....but each are distinctly their own

great progress Terry.....

anxious to see what a day painting in your jammies yields ;)

Thanks all for another battery charge ....Thanks JJ, Mark , Vasil, Ruth , Billythekid , Christie , Stacy , Char and June

JJ......the critters are more obvious on this one ..they are ..whale , seal , sea kelp , starfish , sanddollar , the tough one is the heron

Char ..never give up ...sweat it out ..( or was that a hotflash )

June ....magnetizing ? have to put that in my bio...good eye test chart or tatoo art

I thought I would stop and show you a little of my method , I never mix my colors , only layers ...its a 4 layer process in dry brush ... 1 . light layer of base color , dry... 2. second layer of same color , dry... 3. I use a black , on this one I'm using ivory black cause its lays smooth , I use it for depth on shading one end of the form .....4. I add a color , example , if I'm using N Tint I may add magenta or sometimes thalo blue , on browns I add quin scarlet ...it usually is a bright color because it will be absorbed ..this gives it a richer feel......here I only have done the first 3 layers

T Christensen
10-09-2005, 03:04 PM
Yeahhhhhh !!!!!!! Its done .

Not quite what I had planned in the beginning , but they never are . More color in the lower area than I wanted , was intending to keep it on the gray side and leave all the color in the geese . ...Just think of it on the abstract side  .

I'm going to post this in the gallery and critiques forums ....
