Finally an art supplies store is carrying suede mat board! Yep, Rochester Art now carries suede mat board for pastelists. It comes in three sizes:

16x20 $7.99
20x32" $14.99
Full sheet -- 32x40 cut down to your specifications -- $27.95

Unfortunately they are only carrying three colors: perle, off white and platinum. Not colors I'd want to work with, but hey :P They will order in any color it comes in for $27.95 and cut it as per above.

Prior to finding a local source, I contacted several sites for costs and shipping on full sheets of suede. All cited 32x40 full sheets as way too expensive to ship as is. I guess it depends on what they call "expensive" as I've ordered full sheets of regular mat board from Dick Blick several times and not been charged any more than usual. Go figure :P

Anyhow, if you want to try suede out, this is a great way for you to do it.

If you like it, DO try to source it locally and don't just call one or two places. Keep calling! I finally found a framing shop that sells it to me for $22 a sheet, uncut, and ANY color. They usually have it in stock, too :P They've also told me that they'll order in the 40x60" size with no extra charge if I want it. So, call around if you like the effect.

Thanks so much for your money saving tips and sale information! I plan to try this out and see if I like it.

I'm currently doing most of my pastel works on Ampersand pastelbord. (Somehow, I'm more inspired working on board than paper.) So this sounds like a great thing for me to try.

Thanks for your comments, Ryenke! I love sharing the information with everyone and I feel it benefits us all in the end. I figure that the more aware pastelists are of what's available and the more they ask vendors for "new" or "special" items, the more easily items will be gotten for pastelists :P

Whew!

Having said that, I'll shut up :P
