After having so much fun with the last Pontiac, here is the start on a 1955 Chevy Nomad.
All metal and LOTS of chrome - yipee. So this time I remembered pictures and thought I'd post the progress. Started this afternoon, so not too far along yet....
Oh - 26 x 36 on Wallis.

Next Step - some progress through the headlight. I don't like doing this part much. It's so slooooow.
It will look more like glass when some contrast gets in there tonight.
More later!

Go Johnnie go! (Geez- I sound like a Shirelle!)
This is coming along so nicely- and the shiny stuff is such fun. Have you a market in mind for these works?

Julie - I WISH I knew what I could do with these. This is the second in this size and style. Any ideas???? (Or... Chuck Berry - LOL)
Jamie - hmmmm. 7 hours maybe. Scary, huh? Miles to go before I sleep.

Is there a reflection in the headlight?....like buildings, or mountains? Very cool!

Have you considered auto dealerships? The more *ahem* upscale ones might be very interested for their management offices.
And I know they'd sell as prints- if you wanted to go that way.
(nah- I could never smoke enough to sound like Chuck Berry)

Christine - the car was just in a parking lot across from trees and more cars. The headlight is seeing a lot of sky and pavement, though...
Car dealers - good idea... prints, another good one!

What a blast! This is another great one Johnnie...I'm pulling up a bucket seat to watch it progress.
What about car clubs? There are many well-heeled folks who collect and/or restore classic cars--I would think there'd be a big market among them--especially with the specific detail work you do, which would meake the cars readily identifiable to those in the know.
Slow? I'll tell you about slow. I've got about 12 hours into a 12 x 12 of a pile of onions from the WDE...I hope to post it by Friday, lol.

Sandy & Mikki - thanks for looking... "queen of chrome"... cool, I'll take that
Diedre - yeah - high beam's on and we're movin forward here!
Orchid - thanks. We are build up our patience, no? You DO have a time investment in those onions!
More chrome rim around the headlight and some metal trim (which still needs softening)

Are you using nupastel, polychromos, or pastel pencils for this piece?

09-22-2005, 06:47 PM
Susan - wow, thanks. I'll just park my car under your tree....
Julie - soooo slooooooow
Rose - that's good that it looks simple... in many ways it is.... if it was really complicated I probably couldn't do it LOL
O'Aieghlans - 10% NuPatels/Derwents for hard, 85% Rembrandts and 5% pencils. I have a failry good selection of CarbOthellos and 18 new Derwents : )

Wow, that's wonderful, you make it look so easy, just beautiful work;)
About selling them, do you ever have local car shows where you live? Old cars, like these, there might be some interesting in buying one of your paintings or even commission one of their own car? :)

09-24-2005, 12:21 AM
Johnnie, I'm taking notes, this is just too great. Slow, yes but the results you are getting, oh my. I too like old cars and have quite a few pics awaiting their day. There's a car show here in two weeks, so will take camera and get more pics. I enjyed Dawn's tale of the 55 Willllys's Jeep, sorry I missed out on seeing that. I have two Jeeps I take off road. I have a painting or two in mind for them.
Johnnie, your cars are worthy of making giclee prints, bet they would sell like hotcakes at car shows.

It always fascinates me to see an artist work from top to bottom, left to right, without even blocking in the colors. In your case, you are doing a bueatiful job of keeping the painting harmonized. This is beyond beautiful, Johnny, and while I sympathize with the "gruel-through" on a big painting, this one is well worth the effort.

Hi Johnnie,
What can I say ?
If perfection is 100% your painting is 98 % (I'll keep the 2% to make you keep improving :-) )

José

I remember the beginning demo Johnnie. Melodie, James, Johnnie has given the thread address in his above reply. I think you'll enjoy it.
The finished painting was well worth the wait. I'm amazed and impressed that you went back to it after to many months dorment. I almost never can do that - no discipline at all here! LOL
Good job.

CRIPES you are good with those pastels!! I might have to give wallis paper another go! Ever do a Carmann Ghia? (spelled right??) My father has an old '68 Ghia, would be cool to do one of those! And it's RED! He also has a '67 Studabaker, also red, and VERY VERY COOL!!!!!

Whoa! Fantastic work...I love it.
I'm a car guy at heart, but I've yet to master them in my art. When I see work like this, I get all worked up to try another one...but I know that it will take at least one hundred more tries to get mine to look like this!!! I need to see more of your work.
I think this piece is fantastic...

Paula, Christine thanks.
Cindy - funny, I don't like the landscape area much. Odd, huh?
Diane - last version posted (it is finished LOL)
Mike - go for it! I've done a couple of full cars, but I do like the close ups.
DrBrad and Linda - those headlights were a doozy, for sure.
Redstreake - Ha! My first car was an orange Karmann Ghia. And I used to live in So Bend Indiana where they made the Studebakers, way back when. Too cool, have several favorites.
