You guys really got busy today!!! Everything is looking wonderful!!!
We went to L.A. to see the opera "The Grand Duchess." Most fun I've ever had at the opera - it was directed (and changed!) by Garry Marshall, so it was almost like seeing Mork & Mindy in 1862!!! Really fun, and funny. Just got home about 20 minutes ago, so there'll be no drawing for me until tomorrow night. But I did have a chance to think about how I want to approach the milk cans - and I hear it's a good thing to think about what you're going to do before you start. I'll test the theory!!! :D

Think I just about got it thunk, Judi. Just need to get through the work day and get home to the paper!!! Newspaper went to the printer this morning, so I have three nights free . . . hope I can get it done before we leave!! On the other hand, it would give me something to do in the airplane, wouldn't it?
Mary, that pitcher is looking great!!! It's such a complicated design, I don't think I'd even attempt something like that.
Stacy, good luck - the ref is beautiful.
That's all I can see from the reply window . . . sorry if I missed attachments.

Anita...this is amazing!!! i LOVE it!!! you've inspired me to do my own version. here's the latest w/my WIP.
I'm just amazed at the stuff in this thread! I'm so overwhelmed with trivial stuff of my own that I just can't comment on each one of these drawings. They are all amazing. I'm so far behind in what I have to do that I might just chuck everything and start over on something else. How do all of you find time to comment and post and draw and lead normal lives? You are all amazing!!
And happy birthday Judi again.

Hey guys, a funny story just for you, and an announcement of sorts...
Right after I entered the above message to Anita, my system crashed. For those of you who don't know, my computer decided late last night to start going absolutely haywire again. Since it crashed a little while ago, I haven't even been able to get it to reboot. So, to keep from physically destroying the machine itself, I decided to take a walk to the library to settle my nerves, and to use their computer as I am now doing.
Now the library is almost exactly 3 miles from my home. About half way here, a wasp landed on me. Then one of his friends showed up and followed suit. I'm highly allergic to these wretched creatures, and if I get stung, I'm on my way to the hospital. Long story short, the damn things chased me almost the entire rest of the way to the library. I literally had to run and they were still coming. Now I'm sitting here feeling half dead because I actually had to run about a mile and a half. The marines would be SO ashamed... ;)
Anyway, that brings me to the announcement - expect me to be absent for the rest of the day, and possibly all of tomorrow. I've asked Judi to try and keep an eye on things in my absence as long as she's around. If nothing else, I will come to the library on Wednesday and do what I need to do. I'm not going to drop off the face of the earth on you guys like I did when I went out of town.
Have a good, productive evening! :) And Anita, just in case you woke up without a sense of humor today, your truck looks great. Yours as well, Fuzzy Robot. :)

Troy - Sorry to hear your computer crashed again and you had to go to the library. But thanks for giving me a good laugh tonight! :D Do you think it's safe to return to the library on Wed? Aren't you afraid the wasps might be waiting for you? They didn't follow you home did they? We wouldn't want them to know where you live. :p (Sorry, I couldn't resist.)
Anita - Another spectacular job!  And please stop saying you are unemployed. You are not unemployed, you are an artist. :)
Billie - Your car is also great!!  You have definitely pushed those darks and it makes that chrome super shiney! Nice work.
Hi Chaz! Sorry to hear you are feeling overwhelmed. And about this...
How do all of you find time to comment and post and draw and lead normal lives?
I have asked our classmates the same question more than once. Personally, I can't remember the last lesson I actually finished! But I love being in the current class so I start new lessons when I can even though the old drawings wait. I'm hanging on by my fingernails trying to stay with the class, but I know if I give up a "better" time will never come. So I do my best and try to let that be enough. Hang in there and join us again when you can. :)
Hi to Anne, CJ, Mary, Michelle and Judi - the 39 year old birthday girl. ;)

Hey Anita, Stacy brings up a good point that I don't think I've ever discussed with you. Do you sell your work ever? I guess I just assumed that you did. If you don't, you, madame, are clinically insane.
Fuzzy - what's up with you? Huh? I complimented you on your truck also, but you didn't thank ME!!! I see how it is...
I dont want to push my luck here by pulling up your thumbnail image for a closeup Billie, but it looks outstanding in that tiny image. I seriously thought you re-posted the ref at first glance.
Troy Rochford
09-26-2005, 11:43 PM
OH, and Stacy - my system seems to be in momentary remission right now, but if it screws up again, you can bet I'll be driving to the library next time!!
But anyway, smarty pants... don't you have some pictures to take or something? ;)
Anita Murphy
09-27-2005, 08:02 AM
Troy - first thing with selling work is that you need to find someone who wants to buy it! I have yet to find anyone remotely interested! Was this a sneak visit to the class between computer crashes?
(I thought medical history was supposed to be confidential? http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/27-Sep-2005/58769-33859-532-13766-banana_dancing.gif I'm only a little bananas! :p )

Check your pms in a little while. Oh, and yes, my computer was kind enough to cooperate for a little while last night. Today has been shaky, but better than yesterday. And there are no varying degrees of bananas.. you either are or you aren't! And you are! :cat:
Great Old Trucks Anita and Billie. I have an old firetruck on my easel, (Or more correctly, lying on the floor next to my easel) that has been there for months. Maybe I'll finish it soon, But not this week. I have a stainless steel coffee pitcher (empty) I'm trying to finish before saturday. if someone would mow my lawn, I might get it done (Fat Chance!)

Judi, Hope you had a great Day. :)
Troy sorry to hear about your computer. Do you have a virus that is re occurring? You can check your start up programs and make sure it is not there.
Stacy, Wow that set up reminds me of baking cookies, it is good to see your posts again in class. :)

Hi Troy, I see you are on, so I will take advantage and post my pitcher. I feel that my ellipse is still a tad high on the left side of the screen. The book and the rose I have only lightly shaded because I don't know if they are in the right place. I also wanted to ask you if you don't think that if I put the weaving in, the whole thing will be too busy?
Glad to see you back and hope you comp. problems are solved. ;)

Mary youre doing fine, I wouldnt mess with the ellipse anymore. You know what? Weird stuff in this world of ours.... I haven't felt well today either. In fact, that's why I am now about ten hours late sending info to Anita that I mentioned earlier.
And with that - Anita check messages!
Oh yeah, Mary you make the call on the weave. personally I'd put it in... not too busy, it balances out well with the pitcher design

Troy, one more question and it doesn't have to be right now, but are the darks and the highlights in the pitcher enough now?
Anita Murphy
09-27-2005, 09:36 PM
Mary - I totally disagree!!!! I love your pitcher! I think its WAY better than my trumpet!
Troy Rochford
09-27-2005, 09:37 PM
Mary the bottom half of your pitcher needs more contrast/deeper darks. I forgot to mention that.
Anita - Trumpet?? What did I miss? Are you doing like five drawings per day now or something?

Anita and Billie, your trucks are fantastic. Keep on trucking girls! Yeah, I know--very very corny :p
Mary, your pitcher is looking fabulous. The detail is amazing.
Thanks everyone for your comments on my still life in green. I'm going to try to work on it some more tomorrow. And Troy, I'm glad You gave me permission to not have to ask for permission to use a white pencil ;) I'm actually going to try to not use it. I had started the drawing on a darker gray paper and had used some white on it and didn't like the effect, so I'm afraid of ruining things. I'm going to try to just stick with graphite.

Mary sis, the table is darker except above the base of the pitcher.
Take a view finder and put it on the table then put another on the vase (move it around the vase and you will see where I am saying where the vase goes darker than the table).

Mary - your pitcher is just amazing. I think you should make prints so we can all have a copy :p
Hi Judi and Billie
I think Billie has it right about being family here. And I think what is especially nice is that new members are always being welcomed into the family instead of being made to feel like outsiders.

We are just one big happy family.
I am also doubling this one up with the WDT this week...which just happened to be a trumpet. I think that someone 'heard' Connies 'request' of a trumpet-and delivered. :)
Well only a few days left and I am just posting stage 1. I have to really do some key area darkening in the fluted opening as I lost some of my lights there. :( It may not be fixable.. http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/28-Sep-2005/37258-33616-bash.gif we'll see.

Thanks Foz, lots of work to do yet...not in a happy place with it yet.
My trumpet is 7" long. Using Koh-i-noors and a micron (as my .35 is not cooperating with me tonite and too lazy to clean it). Drawn on bristol smooth.

Aren't those trumpets just somethin' else??? Not touching the thing myself, you understand, but I sure do like what everybody else is doing!!
Here's the 2nd start of the milk cans - the construction lines. I'll start rounding and such tomorrow. It's hard to see, even with the contrast bumped way up, but you'll get the idea. I'm not putting in the 4th can . . . the three rule, you know. And I can see that the lid on the tallest can needs to be measured - I must have gotten lost in the numbers!! Next time I'll use a grid. This measuring thing is for the birds (at least in this case). On 8"x8" Stonehenge.
See, Judi? I'm working . . .

Promise to do some more work on my pitcher tomorrow...since my rapidographs arrived, I can't stop playing with them! I've discovered stippling looks really cool. Unfortunately, it takes about an hour to cover a square inch. People who do that must be as crazy as people who do cp. :wink2:

I think I messed up the perspective of the weaving on the table. :crying:
Troy Rochford
09-29-2005, 08:31 PM
Yeah Mary, I'd darken the table considerably. Use directional line more than value to establish your texture and the separation between the base of the pitcher and the table. Speaking of the pitcher, I'll have to check the reference, but it seems to me like the base should be very deep in shadow.
Anita Murphy
09-29-2005, 08:32 PM
Mary - I don't think the weave is bad at all. But I think you need to deepen the shadow from the book and the pitcher. At the moment the book is almost the same value as the table and it gets a little lost. And I think the rose needs a little more shadow on the underside. The pitcher is SUPERB!!!!!! I can't get over how great it is!
The fork is only one of four - have done two so far. I'll post it when its finished.
Fozbot
09-29-2005, 08:35 PM

Hiyas everyone,
Mary I did something for you (you can see if it could help or not). I studied the tonal values in your ref pic.
From a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being white & 10 being the darkest) this is what I did...
values are marked in color:
Yellow - 10 to 9 values
Green - 8 to 7 vaules
Blue - 6 to 5 values
Pink - 4 to 3 values
Lightest Highlights 2 to 1 values
Hey Teach did you see I posted a update in my sig of the eye you told me to fix.

Anita! You are setting a lovely table!
Mary! Beautiful. I agree the perspective is off on the weave. Yes more value tones. This is the home stretch!
Troy! I worked about 10 minutes on it after work blackening the deepest value areas in the inner horn section hoping to lighten up the adjacent areas . That's it. You are right on the values. I realized my error after the sin, but being ink darkening this is my only way out-if I can get out. Didn't feel so hot tonite. I don't think I can get a good close up but I will try. And also the ref is attached. Hopefully tomorrow I will get going on the rest of the horn and the bg.

Don't get mad at me but I think you need to use a kneaded eraser or better yet a eraser pencil (best one I like is by Faber Castill).
You need to pull your lights in the table, You do have the wonderful texture.

09-30-2005, 07:36 PM

We're working on a trumpet (as most of you know) in the weekly drawing thread.

Hi gang! Sorry to drop out of sight for the last few days. The beginning of the week was just busy. I made it here to read and while reading noticed a lot of people weren't feeling well. I decided to get out of Dodge quick! :D Lucky me I did escape whatever Sults and CJ had, but the next day my back mysteriously went out without warning. I think someone hexed this class. Troy, do you have enemies that we should know about. ;)
Anyway, I am slowly on the mend and hope to get some drawing in tonight or tomorrow. Had to avoided the computer and drawing table until I got things back in line.
As for all of the recent posts, everyone is doing great!!
Mary- your pitcher really came out terrific!! The etching is so beautiful and delicate and the rest of the drawing is well done too.
Anita - I have lost count of how many great drawings you have done in this class. I really hope you frame and hang all of your silverware!
Tia - Your trumpet is coming along well. I've peeked in at the WDT some this week and am impressed with all of the drawings there. This is not an easy subject!
Judi and Connie - you both are doing/did well on the trumpet too!
CJ - Good start on those milk cans. Don't work too hard while you are away! You should enjoy yourself.
Hi to everyone else who has been here! Hope I didn't miss commenting on any drawings. This thread has exploded in the last few days!
I hope to be back tomorrow with an update of my drawing.

Hi Tia!
Fantastic that you are joining us!  The more the merrier. :D The reflective section of the bell looks great. Try to straighten the bell out to an ellipse.
I meant to ask-is the blue bg colored pencil? If so may I make a suggestion? Sharpen the blue pencil real real good (but do not draw blood-lol). Then, with much concentration - go over it in lines so close together-so you do not see daylight. Do the whole drawing this way. Maybe 5 or more times. Keep sharpening you pencil at least once a minute. Do about 5 layers and see what you think. This should give you good consistant color. Then select another shade of maybe indigo or tuscan. (practice on a scrap piece of paper-going over 5 layers of the original color blue till you get the darker shade you want for the recesses of the folds.

Stacy: Glad you are back... darn I feel your pain... mine goes out for no reason as well... then it is two weeks of pain and not being able to sit. lol Feel better! Thank you, I agree everyone is doing quite well with it.
Judi: Wow that sounds like a lot of work, but will try it... It is a metalic blue colored pencil from prismacolor. I had actually thought that it picked up on the "jean" type look with all the white areas...like jeans have, but I am sure making it darker will improve the "pop" of the trumpet. Yeah, the shape does need a bit of refineing(sp)...thanks!

Hi! Judy and Judi!!!!  NOt participating. I'm drawing a trumpet which is starting to look more and more to me like a big set of metal intestines! Seriously, I am working with one of my reps on closing a rather large project and it has taken up a lot of time this week so I am on the road again...sigh....

Ouch, Anita! That brings back memories. I was in a cast (plaster) from knee to toe when my three kids were little. Tia, I love your trumpet. It looks great in color!
Anita, all of your silverware has been super. Fantastic forks!
Mary, "wow" is all I can say. The detail on your vase is amazing! I also love the surface of the table.
Judy, the trumpet is great. It's very very shiny! The background notes are a great added touch.
I finally had a chance to work on my drawing again today. As is the case with any picture I draw where the subject doesn't have a face, I quickly lose interest. I'm going to post what I have now, since I probably will never finish it. The idea of adding highlights to the strawberries makes my eyes glaze over. I'm ready to move onto something else. Hey Judi, sorry for not commenting. I thought your trumpet was at the same stage that you showed me last night. This looks great, and btw... I TOLD you that was a great bg idea! Now you see from other comments that I was of course correct, and you are of course the Wyle E. Coyote of background concepts!
One thing I would suggest - darken the dark notes. You want almost equal contrast between the "local" bg tone and the dark notes as you have between local and white. Make them as dark as you can without going totally black, and this way they will stand out more but will still be subtle enough not to compete for attention with the trumpet.
Judi1957
10-01-2005, 10:07 PM
Thanks Troy. ACME bgs???? :D
Yep - you are right. As a whole it doesn't apear to be dark enough in respects to the notes-not that it should be BOLD-but just a bit darker as you suggested. Good eye! Thanks for the advice!!!! Will do and repost tomorrow.
BTW All--If you have anything that you think will be good for the RIL-it would be much appreciated if you would submit them there-or go do some photoging on your own and put those in. We just lost 1500 due to the copywrite issue and it would be great to have some replacements!

Kordelia - nice cp work. I like the colors that you employed there! The placement and angle of your highlight inside the bowl are a little off, which may or may not have been deliberate, but overall this looks really cool! :)
As for the classes, we typically "strongly encourage" people to at least do the first five classes, then proceed at their own pace, picking and choosing the classes in which they choose to participate. As far as I'm concerned, you can participate in the current classes, but please do submit something for the first five classes as you go along. I don't know much about your ability, but based on what you just posted, I'd say you will find the first five fairly easy and can knock those out pretty quickly.
