Well, here is my forth pastel "portrait", 18x12 on pink recycled paper. My reference is a small printout from snapping a digital photo off my TV from a still VCR pause from the show temptation island.

They have fireside events every week and they have lots of kewl image potential if you like dramatic lighting that is. (I do)

Anyway, I'm not quite done but I thought I'd post one in progress for what its worth, at least I don't have the onionskin paper this time! Sorry the pic is a little blurry, I had it on the floor and tried to take a pic overhead with my digital camera. I still have many adjustments to make yet as well as increasing darks and lights etc.

The reference image is so bad I'm not sure I'm going to use the VCR technique again except for quick sketch practice, you know, the tape will only stay on pause for about 5 min before it shuts down. Nice built in timer for quick sketching!

Noble,

Everything is looking good. Nice handling of the pastel, beautiful colors. You have caught the thoughtful mood of the figure. Just a few simple strokes and you'll have it. The freshness is lovely.

Your picture is great! You are very good. What kind of paper did you do this on and what kind of pastels do you use?

Thanks everyone for the comments, I have a hard time liking most of my "art", but I'm trying to have some compassion for myself in my ongoing process of development. Your comments are helpful in that regard, I am grateful to you.

The Pastels are NuPastel. I really like and hate them. I need to get some bigger softer pastels too, as I don't want to do anything too "stiff". I like Doug Dawson's style but haven't been so bold as to try and do something along those lines yet. I'm afraid of what (crap) will result!

This paper is Strathmore Artagain from a pad, kind of a pink gray color, I should have chosen a darker paper but the only kind I had possesed severe "orangepeel" texture. So, I can't get the b/g any darker without spraying which I guess I'll try. I need to get back on this one soon or else I might abandon it.
