View Full Version : Friday Night Drawing!!!

Welcome Good People of Wet Canvas!
I am your host for tonight's event... Isn't it exciting to know that at this very minute so many of your fellow artists are gearing up to work on the very same project as you are! But this is not a competition, nor is it a time for any over detailed, over worked final pieces... plenty of time for that later!
Tonight is about sketching, loosening up, excersizing, getting those creative juices flowing, trying something new, getting some inspiration and most of all community...
Tonight our topic is SCULPTURE
I have included 6 pieces from the various collections at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. These are lesser known works so that you do not get hung up on any preconcieved notions. And I want you to think of this as if you were there at the museum sketching the actual piece in front of you... Think of tonight as your own virtual museum, except here no one will be looking over your shoulder, asking you how to do that? asking you for a date? or saying they once took art in grade school...
Tonight, feel free to pick any 1 of the 6 images. You may draw all 6 if you like (show off) or you may draw a section of any of the 6. Try to find something that ignites you, a fold, an expression, the light, well you know this stuff... Use any medium that you are comfortable with, these are just sketches. If you feel you want to take your work and do a finished piece, please do so...
(If you do... please post them under a seperate thread with the preface FND, so we will know where to find them, and that it was done as a result of this night)
Now don't forget you have from 9:00 - 9:20 pm EST to post your work. Please post them here in this thread in the Drawing Forum, then meet us in chat on the Roof! Okay enough stalling... and away we go.... :D
Thank you all in advance for participating...

animal i know you didnt take an hour on this, and iknow you very rarely draw humans.... so these are actualy very good. You should get some practice drawing people, and seeing the shapes their bodies make... its very simple once you know how :)

Make me draw at 12:00 will ya! I woke up at 11:30 and went "OH MY GOD!!" :D
Anyway, I spent most of the hour trying to warm up so I only ended up with really quick sketches. It was a good excercise anyway!
01-11-2002, 09:11 PM
Wow that hour zoomed by... I was just getting into this... but here goes my effort, to be fair pencils4me and Malarkey picked my choice, and I didn't look at these since choosing them from the net yesterday... :D Hope you guys had fun, see you in chat ;)

Have never done anything like this before, so did not look at anyone else's work yet in case I lost my courage. Sketch in 8.5"x 3"
It was fun and I feel I did loosen up towards the end.
01-11-2002, 09:20 PM

Bring me the head of Bill Gates!!!!!!
Ok... here it is.
01-11-2002, 09:58 PM
Here's mine, albeit a little late. Whoopsie me not considering that QLD isn't on Daylight Savings, so having to rush it when I finally did log on. In any case, it forced me to use a different style, which I'd been wanting to do for a while.
Here's the damage.. er... results. Heh

Here is my sketch. Very challenging but fun.
01-11-2002, 11:19 PM
I know I mised the 6pm meeting (6pm here) but I was wondering if it would be ok for me to try now and post what I get?
01-11-2002, 11:23 PM
YOU GUYS ROCKED TONIGHT...
I can't say enough how impressed and happy I am that you guys made the effort, did such incredible work and shared such wonderful variety... I hope this takes off and we can do it at least once every 2 months if not monthly...
And I will post some guidelines for whoever wants to HOST in the future... and yes I will gladly do this again, but not to host for atleast a month, too much on the burners :D
Here is a link to quaya's piece... (on page 3 of this thread)
By the way is anyone else suffering a chat headache besides me?
01-12-2002, 01:28 AM
Not sure what happened but when I tried to post my attempts for tonights drawing meeting(?) the page crashed and I just got back on. Anyways, here is my 1hour sketch of the monk. I chose this sculpture because I love the draped robe and flowing lines.
01-12-2002, 02:01 AM
This is quaya's piece... (I moved it for him)
fnd I guess this iswhere I put it...
I still have charcoal all over my fings.. I did stop at 9.. Did I make it? first one...yuck!! I was too nervous!
01-12-2002, 03:54 AM
I am so glad i came... i got to see all these wondeful drawings.
Those heads... i thought the bust was actualy kind of ugly and mis shapen but the drawings of it turned out quite beautifly.
And everyone seems to have such a grasp on shading and the folds of clothing... in one hour you an do a lot :)
01-12-2002, 08:48 AM
so that is why I have a headache this morning off for a good old java......
BTW this was fun we did good..........
01-12-2002, 09:27 AM
Well, from what I remember, I had fun! Luckily I had my laptop with me when the Police arrested me, otherwise posting this message wouldn't have been possible!:D I figured that this was the best place to tell everybody that participated that it was extremely fun knowing that we did this stuff together, and EVERYBODY DID A WONDERFUL JOB! (I don't have the time to write everybody separately) I am impressed with the amount of (GOOD) work that people did in a 'short' amount of time. Mind boggling!
Oh yeah, I woke up with a headache this morning too, but I think that it was probably the cop's baton that did that, it did make some lovely colored reds and blues on my face, is that wrong?
Thanks everybody, I won't forget last night!:D
Can somebody come and bail me out, I think it's around $300,000. or so, I'll gladly repay you on Tuesday!
01-12-2002, 09:59 AM
I enjoyed the sketching last night, even though it was hard work. It was an eye opener to me to see all the different styles and interpretations.
First time I've posted in Drawing and Sketching. I normally work in watercolour and a little pen and ink, and it was great to brush up (no pun intended :) ) on basic drawing work.
I too think we all did well - especially 10 year old Ethan :), and look forward to the next sketchathon.
Thank you Baquitania for this great idea.
01-12-2002, 10:05 AM
Wow ... just started looking through these (couldn't make it in last night) and there's some great stuff here. I'm going to try to make it in one of these Fridays!
01-12-2002, 02:47 PM
Lot of good stuff, everyone. Amazing how well the drawings / painintings came out in only an hour. Looking forward to the next one (hint, hint sherville & Saau :D )!
01-12-2002, 02:57 PM
Boy, what a humbling experience!!!! lol I had a planned belated dinner with the hubby last night, so Bobby said I could do it today.
I spent 45 min. on it. used soft pastels. 3rd time using them, first time doing any sort of 'face'. Colors scanned out really yellow. I LAUGH when I look at this, but just goes to show I need to spend more time drawing!!!! :D
01-12-2002, 06:51 PM
Congratulation all you FNDers........... I've just whisked through all the posts on this thread and elswhere and am mightily impressed.........goodness there's so much talent in this place........... be proud of yourselves.
01-13-2002, 03:39 AM
Did you guys realize we had over 400 looks at this thread in one night, and now its in the 600s...
Thank you all for participating... Sam! We missed you in chat, it was going at 70mph, and that was at very slow on my settings.
I'm so glad you chose to give us 45 minutes of work time... It was harder for you cause you had to do it alone :( But I look forward to seeing you at the next one in the front seat...
Great that you broke out the pastels, and you're doing really well with this... I know I may not post often, but I'm in your corner. :) Please believe that...
01-13-2002, 04:40 AM
Thank you for dreaming up this idea Bobby, it was great fun!
I loved seeing how everyone tackled it ...all the different styles ...all the end pics.
Cant wait until the next one!!!:)
01-13-2002, 07:40 AM
i had orginally signed up for this...and at the last minute could not make it...after looking at all the great posts....im almost glad now i couldnt make it..i could never have done what y'all did so quickly....i guess im not as good as i thought i was....humm
01-13-2002, 08:07 AM
Shelley it's not about who's good and who isn't... my favorite techinical piece was mebucko's for it's overall look, but my favorite "heart" piece was animal's... cause he doesn't normally draw people and never statues, and he gave it his all for the hour...
You can always draw by yourself, this was a chance to draw with like minds, and friends, and people who are rooting for you to succeed... I think that's priceless... just like this community.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE COME AND JOIN US NEXT TIME You will walk away feeling like a million bucks, I guarantee! And it won't be because you created a masterpiece in record time, or that you made anything discernable, it'll be solely cause you shared... and that's the best of what we do here...
I learned a great deal about myself, and about how others see the same things I thought I saw. And sure I envied some, but overall I got to give something back to everybody who joined in. The chat was a ball, this was like owning our own little gallery, and everything hanging was done by somebody we knew about, and those we didn't we got to meet for the very first time...
We read each others posts everyday, but we seldom if never get to see that person write back in real time, hey hello, nice to meet you... You missed some great jokes, some really fast paced conversations... When we had the holiday chat, a record 28 people showed up, but the screen was pretty calm...
This time out the record was from 15 - 23 at the most, and the screen never stopped moving, cause everybody wanted to talk at once! That was soooo cool, dizzying, but cool...
If we made this a formal competition, and everyone did the same thing, it would be both boring and tedious. There would be no honesty or camaraderie... I welcome you to join us for a change of pace, for some good cheer, and for definitely a night you will always remember... Art should be shared if nothing else ;)
01-14-2002, 03:05 AM
Everyone did a great job!
I so much wanted to be a part of this, but wound up having to make an artwalk appearance at a gallery. That's just one Friday a month, so I hope I can make it for the next one.
Looks like everyone had a blast. :D
01-14-2002, 04:41 PM
Better late than never, huh?
After looking at all these last night, I had such an urge to do some...this is about a 15 minute piece in charcoal.
01-14-2002, 09:12 PM
That's fantastic work Gisela, especially in such a short amount of time. Really looking forward to you joining us in the next one. It will be very soon (I think I got volunteered to do it *G*), so keep your eyes peeled.
