I'm playing around with the new airbrush my husband bought me for Christmas (whoo hoo!) and ended up making a stencil of the mermaid I drew for practice until I can do it better freehand. Right now I'm just using a vinyl folder, some masking tape, and my finger to hold in areas not flat. I'm curious to know if anyone has a better suggestion of how to temporarily keep the stencil flat against the canvas while using an airbrush?

Hi Pixeled. I'm going to send a copy of this thread to the Mixed Media/alternative materials forum. Hopefully some one there will be able to help.

There is a type of putty that you stick on your wall and hang posters with it. I don't recall the brand name but it would work nicely for keeping your stencils in place and then pull off without leaving residue.

You might check at the Office supply stores for a two sided tape that sticks to one of the objects its adhered to...and pulls off of the other object. I used this type of dispenser tape when I did advertising. I could pull up graphics and move them around.

pixieled-

At Wal-mart and Jo-Ann fabrics they sell an aresol spray adhesive. It works great! Spray the adhesive to the stencil, let set for 20 seconds then apply the stencil to whatever you are using. It is repositionable over and over again. Also it make a tight seal. If the stencil is plastic and you want to clean the adhesive off- just soak it in a solution of dish detergent and water.

Thank you for your suggestions!

My husband brought home a two sided tape from work. It works nice, although is a little too thick. I'll look for a thinner kind.

For a spray, does 3M Remount sound familiar? Of course, by the time I settle on something I probably won't need it anymore.

plaid makes a low tack stencil adhesive that works very well and you dont have to clean it off, just store it on a piece of wax paper

Kind of late to be replying, but just a note ... don't use this putty stuff with water-based paints ... it does leave an oily spot, which will repel your paint. I learned this one the hard way *G* -- like usual!
