Puffins are amazing little birds, with beaks that seem completely out of proportion to their bodies. I saw a large colony of these fascinating birds whilst on a holiday in Scotland a few years ago. I saw this picture recently on the internet (http://www.grayimages.co.uk/) and just had to paint it.
I've tried to do this with a more painterly feel than I usually do. Corel Painter\Oils. C&C welcome.

Please be careful though as this appears to be a copyrighted image. You may have already contacted the photographer and he has said it is ok to use his image in which case I apologise.

Sarah and Jody,
Thanks for your comments. There is no need to apologise; I'd much rather people point these things out. I have permission from Sean to use his pictures. He has some amazing images on his site.

Steve, this is brilliant! You amaze me with the realism of the puffin, but you have also managed to achieve a very painterly effect with the backround and the brushstokes. How long have you been into digital painting? :)

Steve, I continue to be amazed at what you can do with a computer. Wow.   Love puffins. The only thing I would add would be a highlight in the eye to bring him to life. Keep it up. Glad you don't have to worry about the copyright thing.

Karen,
Thanks for your comments. I started digital painting in mid June this year. I haven't done any art for over 30 years. What a waste of my life!
Carol,
I know what you mean about the highlight, but it just wasn't there in the reference, and because of the extreme angle of the sun, couldn't really be added either. I always start birds with their eye's and adding the highlight is usually the first 'spark' that starts to bring them to life for me.

Once your piece is done, can you still add to it? I'd still "fudge it" if I were you. :cat: Even if it's a lesser highlight, just not as bright.

Very nicely done!!! My work is all done in digital art as well, working with Painter9 and Photoshop. Just love it! Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

Carol,
I'll give it a try. That is one of the nice things with digital art, especially if you save your work prior to making any significant changes. You can also get to a point and then experiment with different media to see how it goes.
Tatiana,
Thanks for the comment. Do you use cloning in Painter, or do you work with an electronic canvas and paint as though you were using a brush? I started off by cloning, but soon found it wasn't satisfying my needs. Not that I'm saying there is anything wrong with it, it just wasn't for me.

I try doing all kinds of different things. I too started off by doing more cloning...great tool to learn painter. But I find I like to turn off and on the tracing, when using Painter. I play around in photoshop too, doing different manips. I just love it all!!! And 99.9% is from my own photography.

Tatiana,
It's all so versatile too. The possibilities are endless. I was fortunate to attend a demonstration by Jerrmy Sutton at the Apple store in London, where he did a live portrait. It was mindblowing!

Steve,
I always loke looking at your work and would love to see this little puffin however on my screen the image doesn't show up for some reason both images are just large streaks of color rather then puffin.
