very interesting. what's the title mean in relation to the work? and what is the significance of the blue form at the bottom right?
he looks meditatively pissed off. is that possible?
And... is there some significance intended with the five fingers plus one thumb? ;)
(Reminds me of the 8 finger plus one thumb ... Corel Painter IX "nine fingered hand").

The Tengu is a mythical creature from Japan that is now commonly used to describe someone arrogant and/or a braggart...the fingers tie the image to some common associations of a similiar character from western culture.
In Japanese Manga a drop of liquid floating out of the nose signifies sleeping or unconsciousness, I placed a fully separated version of this icon here indicating full awareness...and to hopefully better shape the compostion.
I had to get away from my drawing table last night !! Thanks for the questions!

This is good. The reds and blues, in the face, really make this.

Someone has issues...I think there's a John D. MacDonald title "Nightmare in Pink"...this should have been the cover art.
A serious question, LudeKing: do you do pretty?

a very definite asian feel to it...great emotion in the face!
I really like the emotion in the face as well.. And I love the tones you've used for the skin - very expressive.

Thanks for the input Nes, Ill answer with hopefully enough tact as to not offend, but still remain true to myself.
Seriously, I dont have an agenda with my art. I work from inspiration, indeed I have no problem with any type of subject matter, but to do 'pretty' work ,for me, would be... unsatisfying.
Indeed if the viewer can only equate my work with me being disturbed or as one with issues ...its their loss...
From my perspective there are many other emotions and human complexities to explore, that I find far more viable and important than mere pleasure and comfort.
...its strange though, in my opinion, that not once have I seen an artist who does "pretty' art been asked if he does 'ugly' art too ...

Hi Pal, actually I was referring to the guy in the painting...
Thanks for answering the question though, I hoped it would get some discussion going. My own criteria for "beauty" is not predicated on "pleasure and comfort" insofar as subject matter is concerened, just handling of the medium. With regard to my own work, composition, harmony, balance, and nuance are a tall enough order, and I'm lucky if I nail that once in a while. Exploration of the other aspects you describe are probably a higher calling, and more apt to advance the evolution of art...excellent post Pal! -Nick

thanks Nick Im glad you didnt immediately consider me a loon, Lol !
I agree beauty is a varied concept and can include most things, including many motivations well beyond pleasure and comfort in meaning and importance....

Tiz interesting and not pretty :wink2:
Really love the shape of his head not so keen on the folds of skin on his cheek. I think he would still be the unpleasant character you desire without those folds.
