Just wondering if there are any contests for beginners like myself.I mean challenges with some kind of reward built in.Ive just run into a slump , and need to get inspired again.

it would be great if there were challenges of this nature based on a particular theme.

By the way im looking for figure/portrait mesenger buddies so i can have a more intimate surrounding of artists prefereably newbies with some talent I guess.:)

Hi - do you mean challenges on Wet Canvas or others? There are lots of Projects on Wet Canvas to do with portrait and figure drawing, but they don't include rewards other than the learning by doing aspect.

The Weekly Drawing Event is fun and always includes figures or faces - but again, other than getting pats on the back (for they are a very encouraging group of people), there are no rewards. When I was participating, I really learned alot about drawing and painting faster as it is a timed event, and seeing how other folks interpreted the same photo was inspiring.

You basically have a set amount of time to work from a photo of your choice from the 15/16 photos provided each week by a different WC member. They set the date and time to start, when you get done you post your painting - the best of all, you get loads of comments - but you also need to spend time commenting on all the other paintings produced.

The WDE is alot of fun and I know I have learned ALOT since starting to participate.

There are also many competitions out there that are advertised in the various art magazines. You might want to flip through some of them to get an idea of what is out there. Try searching the web too.

And if you wanted to pay a bit to be informed, there is also the Art List:

Word of caution, though, in entering contests you find on the web...if they come from an unknown source and they are asking an exorbinant fee to enter - you probably want to stay clear. For example - I wouldn't hesitate to pay a fee to enter a competition hosted by Pastel Journal...but if I saw one on Billy Bob's Cool Art Site that required a $30 entry fee, I would say that's the one I won't be entering.
