Hi Anita,
I´ve been working on is 20" x 28" velour paper. Unfortunately I don´t know its manufacturer´s name because a friend of mine brings it to me from Europe and trere´s nothing written on it. They sell there in sheets not pads and the colour is a beautiful gray. The shop where she buys it is Max-Sauer S.A.- 2, rue Lamark-B.P. 204- 222002 Saint-Brieuc cedex France,in case you want to check if they sell it on line their e-mail is max.sauer@wanadoo.fr. I´ve also found at www.dakotapastels.com/, (http://www.dakotapastels.com/,) the size is 19" x 27" and they have several colors, but I didn´t try this one yet.

Sand, you can order Hahnemuhle Velour Paper through Daniel Smith. The current catalog has it on page 142, 19"x27". It runs $5.29 a sheet for 1-24 sheets. You can visit Daniel Smith online at www.danielsmith.com (http://www.danielsmith.com)
They have a nice range of colors as well as the light grey that you mentioned. Daniel Smith does ship outside of the United States, and they have such a wonderful array of art supplies.

Sand, the board in Erie Shores is Pastelbord. It's available from most catalogs and online sources. It's very nice to use and holds loads of pigment!

Hello there, I am new to bulletin boards so forgive me if this is a bit late in the day. Just a word of warning about velour surfaces. you might find them OK ... but some of my students (I am a professional pastel painter, do look at my website) tell me that the pigment sometimes "drops off" the surface. If you have had no problems to date, that's great, but do be a little careful not to overload the surface. If you like working on surfaces other than pastel paper, do try Rembrandt Pastelboard, which has a velvety type of surface, made from blasting cork fibres onto card. You could also try Art Spectrum pastel board, though this is slightly "grittier". These surfaces are very stable indeed, and the Rembrandt pastelboard surface produces a similar "softness" of mark to velour. Good luck. Jackie<FONT face="Comic Sans MS">Text</FONT f>

TKS for the warning Jackie. In fact, I´ve been working on velour paper applying nupastels very lightly in layers. As this paper gives a soft smooth look even in the last layers working with Senneliers I work with very light pressure. Up to now I didn´t have trouble with it.I´ve been trying with different papers and I don´t know yet Rembrandt board is it like Sennelier Cardboard?

Unfortunately, I don't know the Sennelier cardboard - I haven't seen it here in England, but that doesnn't mean it doesn't exist, just that it might be harder to find. The Rembrandt Pastelboard looks quite like velour, but isn't so soft and furry, if you know what I mean! However, the marks you make have a kind of soft look to them, and the board will take LOADS of pastel before it is overloaded. Comes in a huge range of colours too. I guess it might have a different name in the US but if you ask in a good art materials shop, they should be able to help. It did go under the name of Frisk here for a while, but now is just called Rembrandt. They also make a waterproof version - I think that is ghastly stuff and wouldn't recommend it at all, so gritty. Hope you can find it. Jackie

I think I've mentioned this to you before but you might want to look into trying Crescent suede mat board. It gives that "soft" look that comes from velour but holds the pastel MUCH better.

I've used velour a lot and have had a horrible time with dusting. With the suede mat board, I've never noticed a problem. In fact, it seems to hold pastel just as well as my sanded papers do.

Yes Roan, you´ve told me about Crescent suede matboard when I was looking for pastel cloth. Since then I´ve been looking for it in the web without success.By the way, I´ve already found the pastel cloth at NYC Central Art but the variety they have there at the moment is too "gritty". I´ve tried also Wallys and liked best. Do you have any idea where I could find the suede matboard?

Hrm, I see you are posting from Brazil -- if you can, call around to all the framing shops you can find and ask them if they can stock/order it for you. It can be a lot cheaper to buy it from a framing shop because the shipping on stuff this large is high.

It cost me $35 to have my first 32x40 delivered and my local framers wanted $65. *snort*. I started calling around and finally found a place that only charged $22 a sheet.

I'll keep looking around for pastel cloth for you. What brand did NYC stock? I don't remember seeing an actual brand indicated in the catalog.

If you want to work a little smaller, what I do is ask my framer for the inside holes from the mats they cut. They give them to me FREE and I get a variety of colors. Try the darks, they are great. Also, I have the best luck with the very soft pastels, Sennelier...
I've been using this surface exclusively for about 3 years, and love it.

Thanks Kellysue, I don´t know if the framers around here are that kind but, I´ll try to ask them. You know, I´m having trouble in identifying the suede matboard Roan advised me. The framer I´ve asked here had just one type of Crescent matboard in several colors.
