I'm wondering if anyone else out there uses Diane Townsend hand made pastels. They're my absolute favorites. She makes two varieties: a regular soft pastel, and a line she calls "Terrages," which are kind of grittier. (Also called her 'professional' line). I think they contain some pumice. The result is that they keep the paper surface more open - the paper doesn't clog up as fast as other soft pastels, and you can get wonderful effects of layered colors. There's something very sensual about using them.
I'm told that the Terrages are made from a formula passed down from an old woman in Paris (who died a few years ago) whose father used to make pastels for Degas.
They're available from New York Central art supply and from Dakota Art Pastels - but Dakota doesn't carry the Terrages line yet. They're not cheap, but worth every penny.
