Sometimes I like to go opposite and in this case I think the strong light on the flower in the window is slightly overdone as an expression so I decided to go opposite and show it as a lower light. I think it's more thoughtful and expressive in this manner.
The photo is in the RIL .. http://www.wetcanvas.com/RefLib/showphoto.php?photo=46108&si=11926geraniums_at_renees_in_dark
As you can see I only use it for reference .. I don't copy what is there but my rendition of what it makes me see. (write that down, LOL).
16 x 20 Alla Prima From photo reference .. sketched in with the brush so no pencil or other type of drawing .. painterly work doesn't require absolute perfections (good thing)

I just love it Wayne......i like the way you don't get bogged down trying to imitate the ref.pic. too much....thats my problem....it's hard for me to interpret instead of imitating
the image.

thank you Caroline .. the way I am learning to do that is by using the pc. You can make a small quick study of something and then take it into a paint program and see how you can twist and shake it.:D

thanks Bertoni

thank you Krysta .. at ease, please. :D

thank you all very much

Kaye .. I tried for 2 years 21 years ago and gave up. 3.5 years ago my wife bought me an easel and I started in oils so in total 5.5 years. I am self-learned so I have a way to go but I am happy with my progress (some days) LOL

Wayne, I really like the subdued look to this painting. It definitely evokes a different feeling from the reference photo. Great interpretation!
