Started another "TreeCreature" ...:o but this is a beardcreature..anyway its time to do xmas stuff ..( renting a booth at a xmas show ) ..this face is only blocked out so far , will be more layering to blend it all together . The issues I have is keeping his beard as white as possible , I have a tendency towards lots of color and darker tones ....I'm a slow worker so bear with me , may take me a month to finish . Watercolor on 300 hp 12x20 .............TerryC

PS ..his Title is ...."Have You Been Good ?"

Lovely start, great likeness already! I've found the best way to make white look white is to use alot of colour ;)

Terry, he already looks kind and welcoming... I wouldn't mind it if he were living in my trees! This will be a wonderful Christmas painting... I can't wait to discover the treasures in his beard!

Pat, you beat me to it, his crinkley eyes cause me to smile back.

Terry, I agree that his skin tones are complete at this point. You may want to add a bit more rosiness to his nose and cheeks later after the background in in place.

For your next installment, it would be great if you "uploaded" your image rather than attach it. Using the "uploader" allows us to scroll down and view your image again while we comment but the " attachment" method does not offer this feature.

I have no idea where the "New image uploader is" but the one I use is under Quick Links at the top of the page.

Cheers,

Gail

Thanks all....love it here , such great support ....

Doug ..how about being a santa model ?
Pat....crinkley eyes have stories to tell
Gail...You're right about the rosiness , I was doing that exactly , waiting for the bg ..and I'll try the new uploader next time .
Tim..I love WIP's
JJ...tissues ? childhood memories ?
Alan..."so far " is the key ..I'm not sure how this thing is going to evolve

Im going to work on the beard next ..trying to decide how much contrast to put in it ..might end up being a fisherman instead of santa :o....TerryC

Thanks so much Cheryl ....... JJ are you better ?

Yesterday I put in about 9 hours ...Today I hope to do another 9 . I'm trying to leave as much white as I can , I tend to go dark , after the bg I may go back and add some layers to richen it up a bit in areas . It depends on how red his shirt will be .............TC

Terry... this is certainly taking shape... your hubby... errr... Santa... looks wonderful... his face has that kind amusement we always associate with St. Nick... I just love everything that's tucked into his beard and I've been frantically trying to find the dragonfly... You are such a talented lady...

I'm out of town right now but I have Bobs laptop here..I gotta thank everyone , more fuel for my motor ...can hardly wait to get home and back to it .

Thanks Patty ...telling me what you see lets me know its ok , for me its easy:)

Thanks Lynn... faces are easy for me , landscapes not so good :(

Olika...I complete the drawing first , I add images as I go almost like doodling . I find I rarely need to erase . Sometimes I start with one large image first then work around it adding more .

Char...He is Danish , maybe something to do with it . His grama was a spitten image of mrs. claus . Hmmm , I may have to look up some of her photos , next project maybe ? Thanks so much for the encouragement .

I'm back !!!!

Hi Jolynn - Thanks bunches....Originally I only did oils then I took a watercolor class from Stan miller (25yrs ago) , and did both . I stopped painting the last 20yrs and started back last year . I plan on doing these in oils on board and framing them like watercolors behind glass with a mat .

I kinda finished the beard yesterday , may tweak some more ..will be working on the hair and glasses today .........hope to finish it this week.........TerryC

Oh- oh I see it !!!!!!!!!!!! wow that dragon fly is hard.. I was looking and looking at that, but I didn't quite get it as his wings are so delicate..:D

I thought that was the fish with his tail on Santa's cheek??

And the fish's head is pointing to the Eagle??

T Christensen
08-16-2005, 10:25 PM
Hi JJ...Good ! You're right , it is the fish on Santa's right cheek , the whale starts at santa's left cheek . Tail first like the fish but bigger .

This should be easy...I added rufus my cat (he's in all my "TreeCreature" paintings ) , but not in the beard .

Hi Terry... I can't find Rufus... :( But Santa's spectacles are to die for... and is there a tucan hiding behind the right lens??? My gosh I love this!!!!

Could that be Rufus' head and ear behind the glasses..

or is that him in the beading on the right, no the left, either..:D

I can't find him..

T Christensen
08-18-2005, 02:10 PM
Thanks Char...I was worried about the glasses being lost and not showing up ..no Tucan..but good idea ..I'm drawing out the next one , tree with xmas theme , a tucan would work great in the tree

JJ , my inspector ....nothing behind the glasses ...but "yes" there are 2 rufus's on each side of chair trim  you did find him .

This may be it ..not happy with how dark the red got . I'm going to intensify the shadows in the beard and hair to level of the rest of the painting . Heading to Alaska wednesday ..may work on this before I leave , lots of packing to do .........TerryC

Terry what a kind soul you've created here!!!!

wonderfully expressive face

love the shadows in the beard....so smooth flowing

the red doesn't look too dark to my eye.....makes for a nice contrast against the white beard

have a great trip!!!!

I am wondering if his arm is a little too much in value with his sleave tho'..

Honestly I am not overly fond of that red, too much variation..

Thanks EM...you're too kind

JJ ...You got it , I struggled with the arm , that red screwed me up , did it first ..ended up overworking that area . I redid the photo ..does this help ?

Have you tried printing it out and seeing how the red comes out..?

08-19-2005, 04:09 AM
OMG...this is absolutely stunning.........that beard is just something else......and his face is so perfect.....lovely kind friendly looking Santa.............I am with JJ on that red though, think it takes something away from the rest of it...couldn't advise you though, but i'm sure you'll figure it out...........

T Christensen
08-21-2005, 12:02 PM
OK JJ ...I finished the beard , hopefully it balances it out with the red . My printer needs ink , the printout is totally off .

Stephie ( love your name) ...Thank you ...I need to work with reds more often . First it was too bright so I toned it down , should have left it alone .

How's this ?
