Sketch #80 : Pleasant Interruptions
http://myfilestash.com/userfiles/r601020/Sketch%20%2380.jpg
This is a study of a pose by Desha Delteil (b1800's-d1900's), a dancer born in Yugoslavia. The photographer of this pose was Nickolas Muray born in Hungary, (1892-1965).
Desha worked for Michel Fokine (Russian choreographer), and supposedly there is a film of her dancing Rhapsody in Blue at the Kit Kat Cabaret in London. Harriet Whitney Frishmuth (American sculptor 1880-1979) hired her both for modeling for art classes and then for her own sculpture work.

It's inspiring work to look at and study . . unfortunately, I can't post the original image(s) without permission from the George Eastman House.
I'll recreate the pose (or a similar one) with the French girl at sculpture class next Saturday, or Tuesday, or I might see her Thursday night -- I'll ask. I'd rather sketch her in a live pose of this anyway. She has about 8 years of ballet.

Stumbled on a photograph by Edward Henry Weston (1886-1958), that looks like he studied that pose too.

Hi Richard, great sketch! Isn't that interesting the two would choose the same pose..almost to a flex of the muscle and both beautifully depicted each time! Love seeing what you are doing! :D

Yeah, I studied that too, and it may be as simple as a few artists hanging out together taking photographs of Desha Delteil. I think in this forum there are a few groups, and I hang out at the gallery on the weekends doing sketches of models with a few artists, each with our own interpretation and perspective. It's plausible it was the same photo shoot.
We're doing one tonight, but next time I have a camera, I'll ask if I can shoot the different sketches -- it's always interesting.
Thanks for looking.

I must sigh along with Pauline (sigh) , Richard! Just lovely...I especially like #86...which reminds me so much of some Victorian drawings I saw in UK...I believe in Glasgow...wish I could remember exactly where....still, all are just beautiful and beautifully done! This last one is your last sculpture class then? If so, what is next? Please don't stop posting!!! :D

This is my first attempt using pastels.
A homeless man sat on a chair for me to do a sketch -- he left after about a half hour when the rain subsided.

Thanks for looking Pauline.
I try to make an hour to have coffee at a sidewalk cafe and work on sketches, the others are poses where-ever they occur.
Poses happen.
The study of sculpture (#90) is going to take a few more cups of coffee.

Hi Richard...I check out your threads regularly and have just noticed that I haven't posted anything. Sorry...but it's a bit like a stroll through a gallery so I get myself a cup of coffee and sit and look for awhile...then go about my business.
I'm afraid I've no crit or suggestions to offer up but I would like to say a quick thanks for giving me a nice calm place to grab a few moments and enjoy some eye food.

Hi Richard
You just get better and I just get greener! :envy:
Love the fluidity of the mermaid... she's gorgeous. Just what do they put in your coffee at the coffee shop? ! :D
Kind of a haunting expression on the face (No:96).... very intriguing. Wonderful lips.
Interesting to see how you started "M".... thank you. And now for a great finish! Looking forward to that!
Cheers..
