A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Pastel Piece by Piece July 05
Project Leader: khourianya
Relative Difficulty: Easy
Type Restrictions: Painting
Medium: Pastels
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: 30
Maximum participants allowed: 25

Description:

No waiting period this month - let's just have fun with this new challenge!

In the book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards, she describes a drawing technique called "squaring up". In this technique, you take a square of a picture and capture every detail within that square. Though it may not look like much of anything, if you do this to an entire picture (capturing it all square by square), you will have all of the detail of the complete image.

In this month's Project, we will split a photograph into 25 pieces. Each person will be given a piece of the photo and asked to complete it by the end of the month. As the pieces are submitted, both participants in this project and others in the forum are encouraged to try to guess what the actual photo is of. By signing up for the project and accepting a piece, you are making a commitment to finish your piece and contribute to the puzzle we are creating.

I will number all of the pieces, but it will be somewhat randomized so as to not make it too easy to guess. Please submit your finished piece in the "Final" Images section and use the assigned piece number as the title for the piece. I will upload progress images of the painting in progress as pieces are finished. It is not required that you upload progress images as you go.

The piece you will receive is going to seem really small. That is part of the challenge of the project. The goal is to exactly copy what you see.

Once all of the pieces are submitted, I will "stitch" them together in Photoshop to reveal the finished painting to us all...as well as the famous artist and painting that was used as inspiration.

This project will last for exactly one month and is open to both soft and oil pastels. The paintings should be completed in a square format only (you can choose whichever size you want - just make sure it is square) and I will PM the individual pieces to each participant as they sign up.

Let's have a bit of fun...and get down to painting.

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/index.php?cmd=view_details&proj_id=919)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

It will be a day or so before i can send out any pieces. When my hard drive died yesterday, I lost all of my preparations for the july project. It won't take too long to recreate them...but my priority today and tomorrow is to wrap up last month's project. Thank you all for your patience.

Oh goody, I tried this last month, and even though I got in late it was still a really fun thing to do, enough fun that I decided to try it again! This time I figured I'd get in nice and early. That way maybe the piece I get will be pretty easy. :D

Well - that went much faster than the first time i chopped it up. had a brainflash while I was sizing up the grid, and realized it was my own photo so I could crop it however I wanted  so - a perfectly square crop later, we have 25 pieces! :D

Anyway - this month we are working from a photo and creating a completely original painting! The pieces aren't that big, but the point of the project is to interpret what you see into your paintings. We will be playing with light and shadow this month..as well as picking apart a landscape.

This will be the month where you learn how to apply this project to your own photos to create your own paintings!!

So I have sent out to those who have already signed up! Let's get started and see how our painting comes together!

Well, I got my piece and what did I get? TREES! TREES AND LEAVES! My absolute bugagoo in landscape painting. Trees terrify me, especially trees with leaves. LOL, well this will either make me or break me. I guess I can regard it as another new "learning experience". :)

Debbie C.

khourianya
07-03-2005, 12:55 PM
Don't look at them as trees - look at them as shapes. See the bits of sky showing through. Catch the nuances of light on them. Look for colours in the shadows. Relate the negative spaces and go from there (and landscapes are my weakness too - so we shall be learning together. maybe in the end we will both be fabulous at them)

Cori- I got my piece....looks like a fun one this month.

LOL, maybe I can do better with tree bits when I just have a tiny corner like this. I don't seem to have much luck regarding them as just shapes. Here is my typical "tree" - from a picture I posted today in the 2-hour sketch thread in the Oil Pastel Studio.
http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=270084

As you can see, I have not really progressed beyond the "green blob" school of tree art. :) Oh well, luckily I got my piece early this month, so that gives me *plenty* of time to work on it (famous last words).

07-04-2005, 09:06 PM
hey - we must have gone to the same school of tree art...mine aren't far off! :D Hence why you will rarely see me doing landscapes. I'm planning on doing some plein air this summer to see if I can't "see" the trees finally!

khourianya
07-06-2005, 01:29 PM
Just a heads up - I will be away this weekend (from Friday night until Sunday night) and will not have internet access (just as well - I might actually get out and do some plein air). Anyway - if you are planning to sign up and want your piece for the weekend...make sure you are in by Thursday evening (no later than 10pm mountain time) so I can get your piece to you before I leave. Anyone who signs up after that...I can't guarantee I will be checking in to send them out. Any pieces submitted over the weekend will be added to the puzzle on Sunday night.

WHAT?!?! A whole weekend passed by and no one got cracking on their piece?!?! Well, okay - neither did I, but I promise i will this week...and If I can do it in a week where I still have 2 more birthday parties for a 4 year old to attend, and a mother in law coming to visit in a house where we are still trying to unpack all of the boxes...PLUS working full time and getting caught up on my volunteer work...then surely you guys can at least post a progress image for me to gaze at :) pretty please.....

I will likely do mine up tomorrow night. With my plein air experience this weekend I am feeling a newfound confidence to attack my piece with...

OOPS!! Sorry. I wasn't ignoring you. just working with other media that isn't quite so dusty. LOL I've got an oil on the easel and have been doing little watercolour thingies in the sketchbook. I guess I'm trying to hurry and make up for not doing any art in June. that was not a good thing at all.

aha! The guilt trip worked and someone dropped by to talk!

I notice we have a new person signed up in the project - welcome. I will send your piece out to you tonight.

I can't believe the month is almost half over. we should really get cracking on this. I know it is hard, when the sun is so busy shining, to work inside...but once our puzzle comes together won't it be worth it?

well, if guilt works for mom...it should work for any woman :) actually, working inside isn't such a bad thing lately. it has been so hot and dry out that my lawn is yellow and dead. not much calling to me out there. my cucumber plant is just crying for water. As long as you copied the piece as you saw it, that is all that matters. Month after month we learn that what we see as our worst ffort...is often beautiful in the big picture. Just you wait and see. You got the sunlight perfectly and th eleaves are all out of focus in the reference so don't worry so much! :)

Our update
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/17-Jul-2005/47843-july04.jpg

I am sensing that you guys are not thrilled with your efforts. You think they don't look like what they should and that they just all around suck. PLEASE STOP THINKING THIS WAY!!! We are not making a photograph...we are making a painting FROM a photograph. Your pieces are all looking lovely in this painting so y'all should stop knocking yourselves. Just do your best. It isn't supposed to be easy...it's supposed to be a challenge. And when we are done, you might be a step closer to realizing that you can paint landscapes from your own photographs.

Corey,

Just uploaded my piece. You may have to crop a bit. Yes, this was a tad different......can understand the angst of the others. Admission that I only spent 15 min on it and cheated by using blue paper rather than having to create the background. Always an education, learned this time that dabbing little dots just didn't do it for me and I don't do much with them.

I'm stillwith your for next month.....the mystery of each month keeps me in.

This looks beautiful and I bet it fits into the painting perfectly. I will add it in this evening.

As for future months....I don't know how much longer I will be able to sustain this project. I realize that summers are harder for people to participate and they are just as hard for me to coordinate. I am starting to find that running the project is seriously cutting into the time that I could be speinding painting. I guess we'll have to see. I may end up reducing the number of pieces to 15 to make it more manageable and more likely to fill up. I will probably keep it going for at least another month and then reassess.

I'm sorry, Debbie - I completely forgot to write back an danswer your question. When it comes to second pieces, I just send them out a week before the project ends. Usually, by that point, there are no more new signups. I will be sending the pieces out on Sunday and will make sure one gets to you.

Where in Canada are you going to be? I'm in Calgary so if your travel plans include this area maybe we can get together for a coffee or a paint out. :) Unfortunately, there aren't many other pastelists on this forum from the calgary area or I'd say we could gather up a group.

Okay, I uploaded my second piece, which is piece 9. I used my oilies for this one, and I tried them out on another sheet of this watercolor paper I have. The water color paper was not very good with the softies, and it is not very good with the oilies either, but it was an interesting experiment.

But does this mean I'll have to try watercolors again to use up this paper? Gee, I sure hope not! :D

Have posted my piece - rather a rushed effort and the usual wishy/washy result. I have been rather involved with house alterations lately and haven't done anything much in the way of painting except for woodwork etc. in the kitchen  ............hope to get back into it soon.

I really love the tree's shadow pieces. They glimmer like fallen silver. And congrats to all of us on this project. Cori got us to really see things differently rather than paint an object.

Cori, I know this takes up a lot of your time and especially when you are having to wait on us. Please know that you are greatly appreciated.

LOL, you had trouble seeing it *this* time? I have trouble seeing them *every* time! Those teeny-weeny little reference shots are really way too small for my old eyes to be able to make out much of anything on them, so I pretty much make up what I'm doing, since the reference pix mostly just look like nameless blobs to me. :D

Debbie- that is part of the fun of this project, letting our minds go, I try not to think about what I am painting, just try my best to concentrate on the shapes, shadows....and I think you did a great job on yours

07-27-2005, 10:30 AM
The look like nameless blobs to me too, Debbie. Except that I know that the finished picture is so I have to try to forget that as I do it (hence why my pieces are always slightly off...:(

I am going to try to do this project at least one more month, but with fewer pieces to see if it is more manageable that way. I like hosting it, but in the past 5 months, I can count the number of paintings I've done on one hand. Luckilly I no longer have trips or conferences or moves for a while and in a week I have a week and a half off so maybe I can get things in order so I can manage the project easier. It may mean I make the committment to only updating the puzzle once a week, but that won't really be the end of the world. I'd just like to see the project fill up more quickly so I can send out the pieces all at once and then just add the updates. Guess we'll see.

Debbie,
I don't know if this is cheating or not....but, I enlarge my piece (3 times) and work from this. The working/finished piece is this large, then I scale the final piece back to original size. It would be interesting to know how others approach the puzzle.

Sandy with old eyes too.

I also normally enlarge the picture, but have learned not to make it much larger than 6 x 6 in. 4 x4 works well most of the time, and if it's like one of the first projects, enlarging it caused pixelation and required really working with a small picture. Still a lot of fun, and this helps when looking at other larger objects to paint.

Thanks again Cori!

So here we are:

I kinda came up with a title for this one. Sunlit Shadows
The location is a park not far from my house (Confederation Park in Calgary, Alberta) and the photo was taken last fall about a week before the leaves fell.

Here are all of the pieces you guys made:

Here is the final image with the photo poking through that one piece:

And here is the photo we were working from:

Well, I have to say that it was a lot of fun... and some of the parts I was working on were not what I thought them to be. I knew I was working on trees, but I thought I had some vine-covered wires, too.

Next time I think I'll work on it upside-down. And I worked from that little itty-bitty piece, griding it off 4x4. Sure was hard on the old eyes, especially trying to figure out the colors...

Diane
