View Full Version : Project Discussion: Jun05 Piece by Piece in Pastel

05-31-2005, 06:41 PM
A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Jun05 Piece by Piece in Pastel
Project Leader: khourianya
Relative Difficulty: Easy
Type Restrictions: Painting
Medium: Pastels
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: 30
Maximum participants allowed: 25

Note to All Participants:
I will be away until June 2nd, so will send out all of the pieces starting when I return from Toronto that day. I will also finish off the May project at that time!
Note to Participants from May 2005:
Please allow 3 days (until June 3) before you sign up for a second consecutive month of this project. Because the number of participants is limited, we want to be fair to everyone who weren't able to join us last month. Thank you in advance.

In the book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards, she describes a drawing technique called "squaring up". In this technique, you take a square of a picture and capture every detail within that square. Though it may not look like much of anything, if you do this to an entire picture (capturing it all square by square), you will have all of the detail of the complete image.

In this Project, we will split a painting into 25 pieces. Each person will be given a piece of the painting and asked to complete it by the end of the month. As the pieces are submitted, both participants in this project and others in the forum are encouraged to try to guess what the actual painting is of. By signing up for the project and accepting a piece, you are making a commitment to finish your piece and contribute to the puzzle we are creating.

I will number all of the pieces, but it will be somewhat randomized so as to not make it too easy to guess. Please submit your finished piece in the "Final Images" section and use the assigned piece number as the title for the piece. I will upload progress images of the painting in progress as pieces are finished. It is not required that you upload progress images as you go.

The piece you will receive is going to seem really small. That is part of the challenge of the project. The goal is to exactly copy what you see.

Once all of the pieces are submitted, I will "stitch" them together in Photoshop to reveal the finished painting to us all...as well as the famous artist and painting that was used as inspiration.

This project will last for exactly one month and is open to both soft and oil pastels. The paintings should be completed in a square format only (you can choose whichever size you want - just make sure it is square) and I will PM the individual pieces to each participant as they sign up.

Let's have a bit of fun...and get down to painting.

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/index.php?cmd=view_details&proj_id=872)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Please disregard all the slashes in this Project description - it is a problem with the WC software and will be taken care of in due time.

Hope you all have fun participating!

06-01-2005, 08:38 AM
Cori, I've participated in them all- can't resist- so will wait before signing up, but give me a nudge if you need participants when everyone else has had a chance to sign up! :)

06-01-2005, 09:56 AM
I certainly will, Wendy! :)

I am still in Toronto for another day, so if anyone signs up before tomorrow, I will be sending out your pieces when I get home (and finishing off last month's project at the same time).

Talk to you all tomorrow!!!

06-03-2005, 08:08 AM
I'm back!!!

06-03-2005, 12:15 PM
Oh boy... this looks like fun... count me in...  the May piece by piece is fantastic... its amazing how different the interpertations can be and still pull the work together!!

06-03-2005, 12:31 PM
Yay - so appy to see people signing up again! I am running a bit behind since I got back, but I do plan to send out the pieces tonight sometime. It might be midnight, but your piece will be in your PM before tomorrow. :D

06-03-2005, 07:59 PM
i'm in for june! thanks.

06-04-2005, 01:51 AM
Okay - the pieces are now sent off! This month we are taking a bit of an abstract journey. it is more about what you see in lines and gradations than it is about colour or detail. You'll find that most of the pieces are similar in colour and detail...I've changed up the sizing and numbering of the pieces just to make it interesting as the pieces are added to the puzzle.

Some of the pieces are small...but think lines not detail. Lines not detail. (have I reittereated it enough yet?)

We have 10 people in and 15 more pieces left to go...anyone else for signing up?

lines not details

06-04-2005, 05:25 PM
Well I've started but can't figure out the colors  ?? I assume that the piece is about the same for everyone... what colors are you seeing in this? I've uploaded my progress pic but the colors looked "washed out", any one with any sugestions, they are greatly appreciated.

Anda G
06-04-2005, 06:42 PM
I've noticed that when I upload an attachment, the colors are washed out and changed. Sort of Andy Warhal -ish.(sp?) My final piece for May and the Faith WIPs are all the wrong colors. I think that it is the new software in WC, because, when I click on the attachment, the picture is fine.

Regarding this entry --> http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/index.php?cmd=view_image&entry_id=48210

Ohhhh - this looks so cool...The colours are definitely right! Keep going and I will add it to the puzzle in progress as soon as i see it in the final images!

Keep in mind that each of our monitors will read colour differently, depending on the manufacturer and how they are calibrated with photoshop. As a graphic designer, mine is set pretty close to true, but what I see on my monitor will not appear the same as on each of yours. The main thing is getting the values right and hoping that the lines meet up just right!

06-06-2005, 09:31 PM
So, there are only 11 more pieces left for June! It should be an interesting month! So, let's get this painting going so we can start to see some progress....

Regarding this entry --> http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/index.php?cmd=view_image&entry_id=48315

   Yay! This matches up perfctly with the original - you wouldn't even know it was a stray piece in the big picture! Great job!

And our first update!!!

So now it's time for the rest of us to get cracking. I am thinking I may do mine in oilies this month. Mix it up a bit since my softies are going to have to be packed soon...

06-10-2005, 08:34 PM
soooo - how's everyone doing with their piece? I hope it's a bit of a challenge, but still pretty fun. I have mine traced out and I am hoping to add the OP on Sunday. This month is so insane on my end...if I don't do it this weekend, it may not get done! :)

We are nearing the mid-way point on the month so let's get painting!

06-11-2005, 08:16 AM
Mine's done - I just need to snap a photo! This one was lots of fun - so different. It was neat working with the lines.

06-11-2005, 07:29 PM
Yay - I'm glad you enjoyed it! So...when are ya gonna post? :D Just kidding - I'm just impaient. I should really just do mine...and then start pestering to have all of you guys submit! :D

I'm not sure it uploaded correctly in the place it should have. It seems to have that 'red X' that some thumbnails seem to get now that we have a new provider. If you need me to upload again just let me know........sorry it's not so good. It's my first time using softies/chaulkies/whatever they are??? Not op's that's for sure. I am lost with these kind of pastels but determined to give them a try.
Oh ya, this is piece #4

06-11-2005, 09:04 PM
Ohhhhh - this looks awesome, Valri (and fits perfectly!)

Here's our update:

Valri Ary
06-11-2005, 10:03 PM
Whew! Glad I got a corner this time  .......I had to crop a bit more than I had wanted to off that side. I am a crappy pic taker most of the time and today was no exception to the rule.
Gotta say, those soft pastels are a completely different animal to work with. Any advise from those in the know would be greatly appreciated.

06-11-2005, 11:18 PM
Two tips - sanded paper and layer, layer, layer (don't manually blend - let the pastels do that for you)...Those are the things that helped me the most when I was starting out...of course, your piece looks like you are a seasoned pro. if you hadn't said anything, I never would have second guessed!

I am about to attempt my piece in the oilies and I am sure it will be much less successful than your piece is! :)

06-12-2005, 11:08 AM
Regarding this entry --> http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/index.php?cmd=view_image&entry_id=48408

You have some great texture in your piece, john. Don't worry about the colours...they look fine on my end. The values are all that really matter anyway! :)

06-12-2005, 11:12 AM
Okay - we have pieces 3, 4, & 5, now, and the top of the puzzle is coming together nicely. Anyone care to start on those higher numbered pieces so we can fillup the bottom? I've been assigning the pieces half and half....

Valri Ary
06-12-2005, 12:37 PM

If you need any back up on left over pieces you can count me in. I am wanting to try my pastels again now that I have some advice from a pro!

06-12-2005, 12:45 PM
Yay - a volunteer for a second piece! Thanks Valri. I will add you to the waiting list and will start assigning second pieces next Saturday. Chances are we have as many people as are planning to sign up, but I like to wait until the 3rd week before assigning more

06-12-2005, 04:36 PM
This is sooo cool the way this is coming together!

lol - faster this time...and it looks fabulous! :) Great job! Just wait til you see the update and you can see how important your piece is...

06-12-2005, 05:36 PM
well, okay then - the uploader is being persnickety so I can't post the update. As soon as I can...I will.

06-12-2005, 10:12 PM
Regarding this entry --> http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/index.php?cmd=view_image&entry_id=48425

Okay - I can't use the uploader or the attatcments feature here, bt the project image uploader works just fine. I'll post the updates shortly through here so you all can see them.

This is one of the first times I've used oilies. I tried them out on sabretooth paper and, I must say, I hate this surface when I am using softies...but with oilies it is actually fairly nice to work on.

Here are our updated puzzles...

06-13-2005, 02:41 AM
Discovered that you can take the oil pastel blender stick, and use a painting knife to break off a chunk and smoosh it into a paste, then scrape the sides of a soft pastel into it and mix it up and apply with the painting knife to the support. i used art spectrum as usual. i'm guessing that would work with colors, too, to get variations in color and tone. oil pastels are so much fun!

this is in regard to piece 22. :)

06-13-2005, 11:56 AM
Ohhh - that sounds like a very cool technique. I may have to try that sometime. I don't plan on doing much with oil pastels, but for the next few weeks (while I move) I will be kind of restricted to them...

06-13-2005, 08:28 PM
Starting to look pretty familiar! :) I've uploaded mine but now that I see the others I think I used too much yellow.
I think this would look cool even if the parts didn't match up!

06-13-2005, 10:00 PM
Regarding this entry --> http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/index.php?cmd=view_image&entry_id=48453

This looks great Wendy! and i think you're right - even if the pieces don't match up - it is still going to look very very cool! :D that eing said - yours matches up perfectly!

06-13-2005, 10:03 PM
And now, an update...

06-13-2005, 10:41 PM
Cori, you work so hard on these projects, that I hate to admit my photo is somewhat off. Let me know if you want me to take another, I've got plenty of time. I should have taken the photo, before I had the glass of wine, obviously! :D  Actually, somewhat, is something of an understatement...

06-13-2005, 11:12 PM
Regarding this entry --> http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/index.php?cmd=view_image&entry_id=48461

Are you kidding? This looks great to me. I love the texture! I will add it to the puzzle right away! I'm sure it will be just right! :D

06-13-2005, 11:16 PM
And an update with Becky's piece (which looks great btw - perhaps on the light side, but I can darken it if you really want me to - otherwise I think it looks just fine!)

Valri Ary
06-14-2005, 01:16 AM

Are those two at the bottom HUGE or am I just seeing things? OR is it a case of I haven't read all the posts.....I'm bad! I just go to the place where the new pieces have been added! Slap my hands.........sorry if you've explained it already.

06-14-2005, 08:34 AM
I'm definitely going to try another photo tonight. My painting is way darker than this!

06-14-2005, 08:43 AM
Sure thing Becky - just let me know and i will swap it out.

lol Valri. I mixed things up this month and varied the piece sizes to ensre that I got 25 pieces out of the puzzle. After a few months experimenting, 25 pieces and under seems to be a workable size to complete in a month. So some of the pieces are going to be HUGE and others will be just regular sizes.I think there are only 4 or 5 big big pieces.

06-14-2005, 10:43 PM
Thanks so much for doing this Cori. I uploaded it again - I'm going to be very embarrassed if everyone thinks they look just the same!!! Sorry for the trouble...

06-15-2005, 08:38 PM
Regarding this entry --> http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/index.php?cmd=view_image&entry_id=48505

definitely looks darker to me. I can still darken it up more for you, if you want, but I think it looks fine as is! :)

Here's the update again...

06-15-2005, 08:41 PM
Okay guys - I am building a list of names for people who want a second (or third) piece - let me know how many you want and have time for. I will send them out on saturday morning to anyone who specifies.

06-16-2005, 08:56 AM
Whooo HOOO ... I'm ready for another piece.... ;) put me on the list!

06-16-2005, 10:24 AM
Will do! :D So far I have 3 people up for 2nd pieces...keep the requests coming. I have 8 pieces total! (I may take a couple with me to this conference I have to attend next week, so it may mean just 2 or 3 more people for pieces)

06-17-2005, 04:24 PM
Regarding this entry --> http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/index.php?cmd=view_image&entry_id=48558

It looks gorgeous! I will add it to the larger puzzle tonight when I get home!

06-17-2005, 07:53 PM
And here is our update! Lookin' good, guys! :D

So - now how about the rest of ya? Working on your pieces?

06-18-2005, 06:14 PM
Okay - I just sent out 2nd pieces to anyone who had asked for one...anyone else want one? There are 5 left. I will probably take 2 of them, so if anyone wants one, let me know!

Valri Ary
06-20-2005, 12:40 PM

I got the second piece -THANKS!...and I'm working on it. If you get stuck with some extra pieces, I'll take another! :wink2:

Hi, all. I'm back. Again. So much going on at home. I am trying out the rough side of the paper this time. I don't know if I like it. I went out and bought the only sanded paper the art store has and will try it soon. I saw all the others so far, and they are so good. I hesitate, but here is mine... :o
I will fix it up and send the final in soon.

Hi Cori

I signed up late - two days ago - but haven't received my piece yet. Do you have any left? Looking forward to doing it again.

Carol

06-22-2005, 09:25 AM
Absolutely -I am out of town at the moment with a horrible internet connection at mmy hotel. I will send you a piece immediately. If I can't connect long enough to upload, I will send it when I get back to Calgary this evening. I apologize for not looking earlier.

Did I miss anyone else?

I managed to get one of my extra pieces done while here...I'll probably do another tonight from home. Boy am I having a weird time adjusting to working in oil pastels. It has been a really good exercise doing this project in them. Any tips from the pros would be great.

eagle owl
06-22-2005, 09:48 AM
Thanks Cori - got it.

Is anyone else doing their peice in oil pastel? Maybe I should do something different and get out of the rut I'm in. Can't seem to get myself together at all at the moment.

06-22-2005, 09:21 PM
I think everyone is choosing whichever medium they are most confortable with. The only reason I am using oilies is that I am moving on Saturday and my softies have all been packed up.

06-23-2005, 09:50 PM
I've never done one of these before but I've always been fascinated by the thread. If you still need anyone to do a piece I'd be willing to give it a try, though not sure how much you can depend on my "exactly copying" skills, LOL.

But if everyone is happy with all the pieces they have no problem. Maybe I'll get the nerve to try it another month.

Debbie C.

06-23-2005, 10:37 PM
I still have 2 pieces left...all you need to do is sign up for the project on this page: http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/index.php?cmd=view_details&proj_id=872

Then I will PM you a piece.

Valri Ary
06-24-2005, 01:54 AM
My second piece is DONE........just need to take a pic of it and post. Can't wait to see the end or it. This one is so unknown to me! HMMMMMMMMMMMM

06-27-2005, 10:53 AM
I just moved this past weekend, so I am hoping I can find time to sit down and add in all of the submitted pieces. if anyone has signed up and still not recieved a piece, I will try to send them out tonight...my entire house is a mess right now, but I do have internet and had the foresigt to put all of my working files on my laptop (which is what we are using as our home computer until we can get our studios up and going.

I'm about halfway through my third piece for the month - I hope I can find time this week to finish it.

06-28-2005, 01:33 PM
Just a heads up, in case y'all have been ignoring your calendars...the end of the month is THURSDAY!!! Let's get those pieces done. I may send out a note sometime today, if I get a chance. I am hoping to be able to sit down and get the newly submitted pieces into the puzzle. Moving has seriously set me back on these things...but it will get done! I promise!

06-28-2005, 05:06 PM
Regarding this entry --> PS I think this was piece 12.

06-28-2005, 05:09 PM
I just posted my piece in the project thread. Hope the colors aren't completely wacko - I can redo if they are. I'm not very good at the posting part....if I didn't do it right just let me know. The project was fun as usual.
Mary Johnson

06-30-2005, 03:18 PM
I signed up for this late, and have not been online for a couple days, so I just got my piece today! LOL, this is the first time I have ever done one of these projects. Now I have something to work on tonight. :)

But gosh, the reference picture is so teeny weeny my old eyes can barely make out anything on it at all. It mostly just looks dark to me. I'll do my best but not sure how well I do working from a reference picture only an inch square. What a challenge. Did I miss something? I could not figure out a way to get a larger image like you can with a thumbnail.

Debbie C.

06-30-2005, 08:38 PM
Okay, I used my tiny reference pic and did my best with my square this evening. I posted it as a WIP to the project thread as I'm not sure if I will want to work on it some more, but since this *is* June 30 I figured I'd put it there so it can be retrieved if needed. :)

But boy this was hard working from such a teeny image. I definitely feel like the Weakest Link with this one - but looking forward to seeing the finished image.

Debbie C.

06-30-2005, 08:52 PM
LOL, Debbie, I did my piece today too - and after looking at the colors in everyone else's pieces, mine is way off. It's just for fun and I think you did a great job.

07-01-2005, 08:54 PM
hmm..odd - I know i posted something in here this morning...then WC went down and now my response isn't here.

I have been without internet at home for a couple of days so haven't been able to wrap up the june project yet...I will do my best to get it together tonight (so all of you stragglers need to get your pieces in)

Kat - I'll get the icon uploaded asap.

Word on the street has it that up to 15 hours of posts went missing....I'm guessing that yours would fit into that time frame. RATZ!!!!
Hey, Happy Canada Day! I get the double header now that I live in the US - with the 3 day spread.
:music: Oh Canada, we stand on guard, we stand on guard for thee!!! :music:
I use to sing that to my mom at every other night when she'd tuck me in. And I'd sing "God save our Queen" on the other nights....my mom wasn't into the praying at night so this is what we came up with! FUNNY.... :D

07-02-2005, 03:15 AM
lol...Happy Canada day to you as well!

Today turns out to be the day where I lost my hard drive with all of my art stuff on it! :( I have a Mac and a few months ago, we put in an extra hard drive and I used it to store everything i have on here related to art - my hi-res digitals of my paintings, my source files for my website...my project files...everything. Today that hard drive vanished from my desktop and now it looks like it might be completely dead. And we don't know if it can be recovered.

So - I am in a minor crisis mode at the moment. It may take a few days for me to get everything back on track and i am still hoping I can recover what is on that drive. Luckilly, my files for the June project are on my laptop, because i moved them there 2 weeks ago for when I wentt o Edmonton. The bad news? Our network isn't quite set up to transfer them over yet.

So it may take a bit longer to wrap up this month's project. Please bear with me and I will do my best to get it taken care of by the end of the weekend (and I guess that buys some time to those who still need to finish up)

07-02-2005, 12:40 PM
Okay, Im sitting here thinking god must really love me (sorry about your hard drive though) cause it seems I still have a chance to get this done. I shall start immediately. Anyone got any metalic powder???? my piece looks like aluminum foil, LOL.

07-02-2005, 11:36 PM
and, at long last - the finale. We had alot of people who seem to have abandoned us (and I am one of them since one of the big pieces of the picture was one I didn't have time to finish )

But here is our finale...not bad overall...

With the missing pieces out:

And the original fills those holes...

and now to credit our inspiration:

and the details:

"Ma Jolie" (Woman with a Zither or Guitar)
Pablo Picasso
Paris, winter 1911-1912
Oil on canvas
39 3/8 x 25 3/4 in. (100 x 65.4 cm.)
The Museum of Modern Art, New York
Daix 430

Okay, guys - let's get going onto the July project. This month it is FUN WITH PHOTOS!!!

I haven't had a chance to attempt recovery of my dead hard drive, but I will take a few mins to cut up the photo again and the pieces should be ready to go later tonight (for those of you who have signed up so far).

07-03-2005, 07:37 AM
Hi Cori, I uploaded my piece on Friday morning, just had a look for it and it's gone. I know it's to late now but I will upload it again anyway.

07-03-2005, 07:39 AM
Jeesh, I thought my piece turned out awful....but, it appears to fit okay.

Sure glad I didn't any get any peices of the woman's form....am terrible at people and animals!

A photo next? That should be really interesting to see how each person creates their visual and the mediums involved.

Corey, you always come through. Thanks. So much happening at your end and still we have you finishing the project. Must be something in the air with all the computer failures going on. Hope all is resolved and nothing major lost.

07-03-2005, 12:53 PM
Ron - if you reupload it, I will add it in and update here. With 15 hours of posts being lost, I imagine we will have a few people adding in the next few days. I'll do my best to accomodate.

Sandy - if i wasn't busy, I'd be hoplessly bored :D Thank you all for participating!

07-03-2005, 08:59 PM
Ok - an update...with Ron's piece now in place.

and the finished painting:

My upload was lost too so I've uploaded again. I idn't think to check back before now!

Best wishes

07-05-2005, 08:50 PM
no worries - i can add yours in as well. I'll do it sometime this evening.

07-06-2005, 12:22 AM
And another update with eagle owl's piece in place (and after having fixed a mis-placed piece)
