Basic 101: Class 20

This class is dedicated to the Late Walt Kelly

Now comes the time to face your drawing abilities. This is the final portion of portrait related classes. We will be moving on to sketching for the next two weeks and the class will be led by CJ.

But for now, let’s talk Caricature. Caricature, simply put, is a comical distortion of the face base on keen observation of a prominent part of the subject’s face. For example, George Bush’s ears are a good example—Laura bush has a helmet head and obscenely large teeth, as does Jimmy Carter. An easy one would be Jay Leno’s Jaw or who can forget John Kerry’s horse face.

It can be easily said that Caricature is the basis for all cartooning. This subject conjures up street side artists busily whipping out drawing after drawing of housewives playing soccer or wimpy little business types drawn with a huge muscular physique.

Generally, drawings that caricature are meant to gently parody the subject—NEVER harm. Maliciousness is never supposed to be a part of caricature. HOWEVER, don’t treat it lightly either—it was caricature that broke the infamous Teapot Dome Scandal that lead to the downfall of the equally infamous Boss Tweed. The British were very famous for their politically satirical drawings featuring prominent figures of the day and here in America who could forget Gary Trudeau’s Doonesbury character, Duke who was an obvious parody of Hunter S. Thompson. THEN there was Walt Kelly, creator of POGO. Many of his animals in his comical swampland were parodies of many of the political figures of the 60’s. Prominent among those represented was George McGovern and Hubert Humphrey.

During the course of this write up, I will be introducing you, through links, to several prominent caricaturist for you to check out. For example, Walt Kelly, John Tenniel and the modern caricature master, Jason Seiler. Did you know that Manet was a caricaturist? That is what he did before becoming “Manet”. Let’s also not forget Leonardo Da Vinci.

05-23-2005, 12:10 AM
Here is a game for you. I have sketched these drawings based on some Richard Adkinson designs for you do see. See if you can guess who these people are. They are movie figures from the 1940’s to the 1980’s. See if you can guess who they are. The answers are printed upside down on the photo.

05-23-2005, 12:11 AM
Caricatures don’t have to be drawn the same way every time. Here are three versions of former president, Richard Nixon. In the first one, we see his “V is for Victory or I am not a crook!” stance. In the second one he is portrayed a sort of mindless dolt and in the third we see the evil “Tricky Dick”. Caricatures are excellent for evoking the mood of the moment.

05-23-2005, 12:12 AM
For our British friends, I simply could NOT leave out Prince Charles. In his case I have elongated his face and exaggerated the ears. The hair is a bit…well a LOT tussled and that has sort of become his signature look—no matter how hard he tries. I placed the crown around his neck because I never felt that he really FIT as a king—he never looks really comfortable with the whole king thing.

05-23-2005, 12:13 AM
This next caricature is one that I did of Gavin AKA our fearless moderator, Zarathustra. Gavin is a striking young fellow, quite intelligent. He also has a square head. Because he is so smart I elongated his forehead and squared his head up at the top. I think his eyes are his strongest feature and he has a very friendly smile. I added the long neck and the small lobe less ears. By the way, one slip of the eyebrow and I would have produced Julius Erving.

05-23-2005, 12:14 AM
The final caricature that I did was of Stoy Jones, beloved guide also known as Stoy. He has a rectangular head but the first thing that hit me when I looked at his picture was the small eyes. It is too good to pass up. He has an “I’m thinking look” looking—I think that Stoy is really a clock disguised as a person—there always seems to be something ticking in there. It was hard for me to finish this piece because I am no hair king and Stoy apparently went out and grew himself a big head of hair but it was a prominent point so I exaggerated it a bit.

05-23-2005, 12:15 AM
Well, this is all fine and dandy but can YOU draw a caricature and why would you want to. Well the answer is YES you can and that drawing a caricature is an exercise to help you notice traits that you normally would take for granted. I have included two of our beloved volunteers, Moderator Zarathustra and Guide Stoy. I will comment on each drawing. There are two ways that you can approach to drawing caricature:

1. Drawing using a photograph

2. Drawing live.

You can draw a caricature using any technique that you currently use. Here are some examples:

1. Using a grid: If you draw portraits using a grid draw the portrait EXACTLY as you would draw your normal portrait—DO NOT exaggerate anything at this point. Once you have completed your line drawing go back to your reference photo and examine it closely. Do you see any features that stand out? THOSE are the features that you want to exaggerate.

\2. Drawing Freehand: Looking at your photograph, start by examining the SHAPE of the head—for example is the head square? Is the head round? What about the jaw—does it have an interesting shape. Get your outline of the head down first and then gradually build your drawing adding sections piece by piece. Unlike the grid method you HAVE to take serious care to maintain the likeness of the subject. After all, it still has to look like your subject.

3. Tracing: you can certainly trace the outline instead of gridding it. Do the same thing that you would do with gridding.

NOW—you can do these in any medium that you choose. Watercolor, pencil, chalk, pastel, oils, acrylic etc… It is your choice—work at your comfort level.

The assignment:

You have two choices—two weeks to finish of course—you can draw just one drawing or do as many as you can churn out.

1. Draw a caricature of a famous person—make us guess as to who it is.

2. Pick a member of this class and do a caricature. Again, do not reveal who the person is until the end of the class session. Make us guess.

Here are some excellent links for you to check out from the WC!

Morning JayD
ha-ha I never expected that we would do caricatures! You did a great job drawing, writing and researching this class. :D Looks like fun!

Hey-we have a few class members who need to post their pictures.

Mary Woodul
05-23-2005, 07:36 AM
Morning Judi and JayD. This is one that I will probably have toruble with but with your excellent examples and "How to", JayD, it will be easier and definitely a lot of fun.  :D

Judi, hope you had a good visit with the grand kids. :D

05-23-2005, 07:41 AM
Mary, you know I have the tendendy to follow my "sheep" around. How was the weekend at the finca and how is "our" little, adorable grandson doing?   :D

Jay - this is a real challenge!

Hi Judi, Mary and Reinhard - and anyone else who tags in behind me. Hope everyone had a good weekend.

05-23-2005, 10:30 AM
Jay...this sounds like a fun fortnight. I want to be in on this from the start :D

And yes....I am working on my earlier assignments and shall post them soon.

Mary Woodul
05-23-2005, 11:27 AM
Hi Reinhard! Patricio is like all adorable children at that age, full of life and knows that the only one that will follow him to the end of the world, is me, so then I drop dead at night. :D The finca is coming along, we are preparing it for our youngest son's wedding on July 9th, now that weddings at haciendas are so popular in Mexico. Estan invitados. :D BTW, I expect you to help me with my caricature.

Hi Anita, I also think this one will be a difficult one, but a lot of fun.

Blah, nice to see that you will be in on this one.

JayD, the test is good but my memory has disappeared. During those years I lived here and went to school five years in a Catholic bording school in Texas but I'm sure I went to the movies once in while. Are these comedians? I don't want to look at the names yet. :D

05-23-2005, 11:46 AM
So far my portraits have looked more like caricatures, now my caricatures will probably miss altogether. But this looks like fun, so I'm game.

05-23-2005, 11:48 AM
Mary que buenas noticias. This means that you will be quite busy for the time to come and I will not bother you further with questions about portraits (but then!!!!!). But what would you think of a project of doing a drawing of bride and groom? I'll let that sink in.

05-23-2005, 11:50 AM
Connie, you are a bad girl saying things like that     and you know that this is absolutely wrong.   You are doing fantastic.

05-23-2005, 12:26 PM
Hi All
I'm with Reinhard on this CONNIE- shame on you-your drawings are so good

Blah-you gotta post a pic of yourself you know :) :D

Anita-agree this'll be tough I think too-but it'll be fun.

Hi Mary! I had a blast-picture a 47 yr old on a trampoline-LOL

Mary Woodul
05-23-2005, 12:37 PM
Judi, I want to see you on that trampoline.

Reinhard, help me with my caricature and then I'll draw a bride and groom.  :D I'll have time, I`m getting everything under control. I think.

Connie, I think you are the one that really has a true authentic style.

05-23-2005, 12:41 PM
Mary, deal :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

05-23-2005, 12:47 PM
Interesting JayD. :p :p
Did you make these up yourself?
Guess ya don't remember this one I did of alfredart and luka but i'll post it in here anyways. :D
Ok the second drawing I just did this morning after checking out your #20.
I cheated and turned your page upside down lol.
Well i didn't put the celebrities on here but maybe you can guess them. Not very good at this stuff but have tried it a few times.

05-23-2005, 12:52 PM
Hi Bon!

LOL -these are so-o-o great! :D

05-23-2005, 03:01 PM
Suddenly Bonnie, I am afraid of the French Rivera. Speedos==cheesh!

So Reinhard, can I assume that we will be seeing a delightful caraciture from your deft hands and observant eyes? I will be looking forward to seeing what you produce for this class that will inspire the others. :)

Judi--Trampoline? Hmmmm.

Bon--Obviously Stoy and Gavin are mine--the celebrities are mine but are inspired by the work of Richard Adkinson. The nixons are mine but are the result of research so that I could comment on the differnt styles.

I have been drawing caricatures since I worked on the school newspaper in High school so this is not unfamiliar ground.

05-23-2005, 04:45 PM
Yes I knew stoy and gavin was yours. And may I add you do wonderful at cartooning people.
Maybe you found your second calling JayD. ;) .You did an awesome job demonstrating this clearly and making us feel at ease to just sit back, look at the subject and find what the mine point of characteristics stand out. :)

05-23-2005, 04:46 PM
I don't know if this can be called a caricature  At least you have something to guess.

05-23-2005, 05:03 PM
Sorry, this might be easier

05-23-2005, 05:03 PM
That is either a pan of Jiffy Pop or Albert Einstein and yes I would say, since you really exaggerated the hair, that you caricatured him. Nice work. I would play with the hair a little more-your hair is relatively (pardon the pun) neat for a guy who was famous for his blind disheveledment. I like the looseness of the line here Rein--this is a freedom that I have never seen in any of your "better" drawings.

Bon--it is funny but I use to dream of being a cartoonist but life kept side tracking me and now the urge has started to come back again. :) I am working on my version of Bush--the man has annoyed me one too many times. :D

05-23-2005, 05:07 PM
Jay, I'm no good at this. Too short time for me (what is 2 minutes vs. 50+ hours). At least I tried.
Bon, you are sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo multi talented. Just great! :envy:

05-23-2005, 05:14 PM
Not so, Reinhard--you are better at this then you think--go back and do Einstein on a grid like you would normally do--once you have the grid version down--THEN freehand parts of the face so that you cause distortion--those jowls of his would be a good place to start--just pull down the lines and exaggerate.

Take those 50 hours and use them for the forces of evil!

Next you finish it up with the correct shadows and detail that you so love--give it a shot--take a swim. When you are finished it should look like one of your completed portraits only with a bit of distortion. :)

By the way, you are illustrating a point that a caricature is not just something that you randomly whip together--it takes time and thought. The gift of a good caricaturist is that they make it look so easy.

05-23-2005, 05:15 PM
2 minutes?Well at least we knew who it was.
Took me about 3 hours lol.
JayD I don't have time in my life to get mad at politcal asses. And so I just try to enjoy my life my family.I don't even try to see the news anymore.Whats gunna happen is gunna happen. Can't wait ot see your version of bush though.LOL
Has anyone figured out who the 3 is in my second drawing?

05-23-2005, 05:20 PM
Bon it is definitively Willie Nelson, the African American actor, don't know his name, played together with Will Smith in Bad Boys and he acted as Jamal; sorry for the lady. Is she Dollie Parton? (I think because of the rather explicit swelling - otherwise I have absolutely no clue).

05-23-2005, 05:20 PM
One is Willie Nelson
Two is Martin Lawrence
three is I think Mariah Carey (this is a real stab here)

05-23-2005, 05:21 PM
2 outta three isn't bad JayD.LOL.You have the female wrong.

05-23-2005, 05:28 PM
I'm gonna go w/ Dolly Parton Bon.

Mary Woodul
05-23-2005, 05:31 PM
Bon, your caricature style is so clever and humorous and Reinhard beat me to Willie Nelson. I don't know who the third is.

Reinhard, I think it is Dolly Parton. BTW, your caricature is very good, with just the eyes and the mustache you can tell who it is.

Hey, Judi.

05-23-2005, 05:42 PM
Sorry reinhard I missed your post.Yes mary and reinhard it is dolly,LOL
Here are the photos I found t use them.

05-23-2005, 06:02 PM
JayD, o.k. there is no shortcut here (I'm soooooooooooooooooo sorry). I hoped I could get by with a quickie - no chance neither   :( Let's see if I can do what you require oh MASTER. Can't promise though since I don't do no gridding no more and the photo I have of Sir Albert is rather small. See you on the other side of evil

05-23-2005, 06:22 PM
Judi yes thank you.
Why do I keep missing everyones post.LOL

05-23-2005, 06:22 PM
Bon, must be my southern disposition--I chose to ignore the breast but now that someone else (reinhard) pointed it out--I could see the dolly parton. :D :D

Rein, in this instance, you are ok to pull out the grid--the key is the likenes--heck you can even trace if you want--you want to get TO the likeness then...pardon my southern accent...distort the hell of it, young son! :D But seriously--once you do the distortion and then start adding in all that detail you will begin to see what I mean. Check out the link for Jason Seiler and you will see what I mean. I know you can do this with your incredible eye for detail.

05-23-2005, 06:38 PM
JayD, I didn't speak of no breasts, I spoke of "explicit swellings"   :D

05-23-2005, 07:08 PM

05-23-2005, 07:31 PM
---I knew it was Dolly from her nose  , what you guys looking at??????

Guess who.....

Mary Woodul
05-23-2005, 07:50 PM
I want to say Condeleza R (sp) is all wrong. (duck my head in case it's not.)

05-23-2005, 08:44 PM
Alfred E. Neumann's kid sister Condaleeza Rice.  Very good, Judi--do more!!!

Cathie Jones
05-23-2005, 09:16 PM
Great, Judi!

I think I'm in for this one, but don't know when.

05-23-2005, 09:26 PM
I GO POGO!!!

05-23-2005, 09:27 PM
Awww gee thanks guys. :)

CJ --glad you're in, pretty fun!!! :D

05-23-2005, 10:05 PM
Judi, now take this a step further and try to develop it in color.

05-23-2005, 10:34 PM
Develop in color- K Boss

Guess who again..did not get the exaggerations in this one as well as I should have.

05-23-2005, 10:38 PM
I think it is Clark Gable. A lot of people dont know that he was also a silent film actor. He did not have his trademarked moustache but had the big ears and looked not unlike a chimp.

Again, try this one in color as well and see how far you can take it in terms of a three dimensional effect.

Oh, I wanted to make one more comment: Gable is an example of a man, handsome that he is, is his own caricature. You will run across these from time to time but conisder the heavy jowls, the doggy bags under the soulful eyes, the monkey ears and that hair of course. Other examples would be Bogie, Garland, and Bette Davis.

Mary Woodul
05-23-2005, 10:43 PM
Wow, Judi, you are so good at this. :envy: :D

05-23-2005, 10:50 PM
JayD
Yeah, worked on those named characteristics (missed the heavy jowl thought)-but didn't quite get it. Maybe did not give it enough time or though that I should have. Oh well-it is Clark-must have been somewhat close anyway. :wink2:

Hi Mary! Thanks :)

Cathie Jones
05-23-2005, 10:58 PM
Judi, you're a natural! Keep 'em coming . . . they're terrific . . . and inspiring!

05-27-2005, 12:07 PM
Me too Mary

And I didn't even do any work while WC was down - *slapped hand, bad girl*

Mary Woodul
05-27-2005, 12:22 PM
That makes two of us. :D

05-27-2005, 12:54 PM
Oh, this is different--I like--I am extending this class an extra week because of the downtime so don't panic--just sit back and draw and enjoy the class.

Mary Woodul
05-27-2005, 01:00 PM
Thank you JayD, so nice to see you and WC back. :D

05-27-2005, 01:17 PM

Missed you ALL!
I didn't do anything either-played catch up with things that fell to the wayside a bit.
So-o-o-o good to be back!
Thanks JayD

05-27-2005, 03:55 PM
It's good to be back. Was everyone as lost as I was with out WC? It can be very addictive. And inspiring. Now I can read, but not see very many images, but know that will improve. But I did some drawing, so guess who?

Fireman's kid
05-27-2005, 04:25 PM
Hi all!

It's good to be back together! Connie, I agree that this place is addictive. But the way I look at it...it is better than some addictions that we could have. :D

Anita said,
And I didn't even do any work while WC was down - *slapped hand, bad girl*

Add me to that list. :o And I don't think I will be joining you here even with the extra week. I am still struggling with my drawing of Abigail and hope to be starting a new house portrait commission next week (just waiting on the deposit). But I will be reading and enjoying the drawings.

Connie, your drawings are very good - and one fo the few I can actually see. I know that woman! She looks sooo familiar, but her name escapes me right now. The man of course is Honest Abe Lincoln.

Edited because I forgot to say a huge "Thanks" to Deb for setting up our alternate meeting place. I was so happy to get the email this morning. (If you didn't get it she didn't have your address. :crying: ) I'll save the address in case we ever have an extended down time again.

Mary Woodul
05-27-2005, 05:14 PM
Hi Judi, glad to see you again.

Connie, I too like Stacey, have seen that woman and can't remember. She is either and actress in a movie about the stagecoach days or is someone in history. Your Lincoln portrait is very nice. Yes I also felt like you Connie, WC is very addictive but also therapeudic.

Stacey, congratulations on you commission, I know you will do very well, keep us updated. I'm with you on the thanks to Deb, I felt so lost because I only had two email addresses from Mixed Media and I thought we were gone forever. :crying:

I'll try this new one, I like it.

05-27-2005, 08:30 PM
Hi Connie,
I'm guessing that is Barbara Streisand?
Nice Abe-you captured him very well!

Hi Mary

Hi Stacy  Congrats on your commission, I would like to watch the WIP if you are doing that here at WC. :)

05-27-2005, 10:05 PM
Steisand? I am not sure but I recognize the period costume as either being from shows like Easter Parade or Hello Dolly--that period--I think I am going with Streisand as well. Now when you caricature someone like streisand, rmeber that she has that swan-like neck and a prominent probiscus. If you look at her profile her head has an almond shape to it. Nice work--see if you can develop it.

I recognized Lincoln right off. Let me point out to you something that EVERYONE misses when caricaturing Abraham Lincoln--he had ears rivaled only by Dumbo--had to that the tired look, the beard and the heavy set brow and you have quite a caricature. Nice work.

Cathie Jones
05-27-2005, 11:13 PM
Wow! This is great . . . you guys have been playing while I was at work.

Naturally, my favorite thing so far (and I've only been here 10 minutes) is the new, colorful smilies!!!

Thanks for the extra week, JayD - I need it!!

05-27-2005, 11:29 PM
Staci--tsk...tsk...tsk... :D

If you get "board" with the house commish..take a moment and whip up a couple of caricatures.

CJ--no prob--have fun with this one--by the way, Kudos to you and Deb for tracking people down during the Great Blackout of O5!

05-28-2005, 12:04 AM
one more b4 I do the coloring of Condelleza.

Guess who....

Mary Woodul
05-28-2005, 12:12 AM
Wow Judi, that one is so good, I forgot his name but he is the comedian actor that is in a lot of movies.

I'll try to finish mine tomorrow night when I get back from the ranch and post it also.

Hi CJ.

05-28-2005, 01:31 AM
Judi, you need to jump in and advise people on caricature--you have a real gift for this. See if you can do something with a body--try to break yourself away from the potraits and move to some full comic figures. Keep the head the size your are doing but integrate the small body. Try it on condaleeza if you dare. Great job!!!

OH--Eddie Murphy. :)

05-28-2005, 09:29 AM
Hi everyone
I am not seeing everyone's drawings, I am getting red x boxes (click on & nothing happens) also getting links to attached drawings (click on to a blank page).
The only thing I can see is Barbara Striesand & Lincoln & Eddie Murphy. Great caricature renderings by the way, Connie & Judi.
I am not sure if the new system works with my computer. :( I may need to fix my firewalls to see images. Also, even though I have broadband it is so unbelievable slow too.

Mary Woodul
05-28-2005, 10:05 AM
Hi Sults, I'm thinking of you! Yesterday things were very slow but maybe they will start getting better. It seems that way this morning. Hugs, Mary :o

05-28-2005, 02:57 PM
Hello everyone....I agree with Sultry, I can't see all the pictures. I too get the small boxes with the red 'x' and I only get a blank page when I try to get a picture out of it.

The drawings that I have seen are very good. Striesand and Lincoln were instantly recognisable. Well done Connie.

Judi...your third drawing was the only one I could see and it was very well drawn, but I could not recognise Eddie Murphy. That is a reflection on my familiarity with Hollywood stars and not the closeness of your drawing to his likeness.

By the way, what is this about sending in my image/photograph and where do I send it?

Bon...your drawings are lovely and I think your style of drawing makes the caricatures look classy.

I have been travelling on work & hope to post my stuff tomorrow.

05-28-2005, 05:12 PM
Hi Blah!
TY. Eddie Murphy is one of the funniest people you would ever want to see. :D

Post your photograph here in Class so we can do a charicature of you!

I am getting red boxes and am having trouble opening up thumbnails as well! :(

05-28-2005, 06:56 PM
Thanks Mary and JayD. Advise...Bodies....LOL...I'll try but can't promise.
Gift-LOL- Truthfully this is not an area which I wish to be good in....but it's all part of being well rounded and it is fun. :) ..I just made sure my subjects had outstanding features, which made it easier.

Hi Sults!

05-28-2005, 10:45 PM
Celebrities are instantly easy--you still have next week and the one after that to do a project so I would encourage everyone to submit a pic in with the idea that you would be caricatured by one of the othe participants.

Blah, just upload yourself to this class--come on guys--this should be a breeze for you guys. Lets see some drawings!

Mary Woodul
05-28-2005, 11:26 PM
JayD, I don't know if this is finished or not but I'll let you all guess to see if there is a likeness.
Sorry Blah and Judi, i got carried away and forgot to say hello and to tell you Blah , it is nice to see you around. :(

05-28-2005, 11:30 PM
:D Woohoo mary i'd know richard anywhere.Fantastic comic you did.

eddie eddie teehee. .Looking fabuuuulouzz

05-29-2005, 12:34 AM
Very nice, Mary--Richard Gere--now see if you can give the big head a small body. :)

Deb Leger
05-29-2005, 02:13 AM
Mary, love your Richard!

I'm so far behind, I don't think I'll ever catch up. :crying: :crying: :crying:

One thing I thought I'd mention is that when posting a pic, if you use the Image Uploader (located in Quick Links up in the top menu bar), you'll get a full sized pic in your post instead of the thumbnail you get with the attachment feature. :)

The other thing is that anyone that wants their email address put on the list I had started waaaaaaaaay back, just pm it to me. That way, if WC goes down again, we can keep in touch at that alternate board. (Which isn't the best place, but it's a place. :D )

Mary, well done...that's a nice caricature of Richard Gere.

Bon, thank you, I really didn't think he was recognizable. :D

JayD  , ok. I saw it coming when I saw you tell Judi. :D

Deb, thank you, and again I want to express my gratitude for your getting us together, when I saw your email, really jumped with glee. :D

Blah, thank you, now the body, oh my, :D

05-29-2005, 11:25 AM
Hi Mary, You did a great job on Richard!! He was instantly recognizable to me.

Hey Deb, thanks for the e-mail to keep the family ( :wink2: ) together.

Hi JayD and Blah

Hey Bon (maybe it is Mary Poppins-I don't think Connie has let the cat out of the bag yet)

05-29-2005, 04:38 PM
I am still betting on DOLLY

Hey Bon--this has nothing to do with this class but I would LOVE for you to construct a rose out of butterfly wings or out of bird feathers. Of course you have to post it in the main forum! By the way, I never used the eek icon before so i used it because I liked the bulging eyes. :D

05-29-2005, 10:52 PM
That sounds very creative and interesting JayD.May I ask why?lol
Well I just had to try these 3 guys.

05-29-2005, 11:45 PM
Nicholas Clay, Elvis Presly and John Wayne--I like the first the best but I love the Duke's hat.

The rose idea just popped in my head--of course I am watching the musical Reefer Madness :D

Actually, I was looking over your body of work and it just seemed like something that would be very Bon-Themed.

05-29-2005, 11:55 PM
I'm getting a thrill over John Wayne, :D these are very good. :D

05-30-2005, 01:28 AM
Thank you mary and JayD.It's nicolas cage lol.Hope I spelled that right?
JayD it does sound interesting.Maybe between my breaks on working on my medusa I will fiddle around with it.Thanks and you have a good imagination.Well your good at drawing to.Soo umm why wouldn't you give it a shot?lol.we will see how each others turned out?lol

05-30-2005, 10:34 AM
I'm still not getting very many images, but those of Richard Gere and Bon's last bunch are open and so good. I usually use the image uploader and that almost always works, though I think it can be slower on some providers. I did a revision, with Photoshop, of Barbara as Dolly. I though I had made her face long enough to accomodate a very long nose, but this has it bigger, with the neck lengthened, too. I guess I'm nervous about caricaturizing a class mate, really don't want to offend anyone.

05-30-2005, 11:08 AM
Very good, Connie--I identified her by the costume as I used to be a dresser and know a tiniy bit about period pieces. Next, keep working on this if you like but what you want to do is make it look like one of your everyday portraits (and you have done some good ones) on with the exaggerated featuren that you have shown us here. For you, because the costume is such an integral part of this piece--I dont think you need the small body like I have been whipping Judy and company over. But soften the lines and go for a portrait-like look and you will be there.

Bon, being in the Paternity business, I have pretty much given up on getting someone's name spelled correctly--too many variations on the species. I would not do the feather rose myself because I am not at your level of skill--this also exists in your plain of imagination--do it for me. :o

05-30-2005, 12:09 PM
Bon I saw all your great drawings they really look like the stars. :)
Mary I love Richard did you see him in the Giggalo (sp?) & Intersection?
Well I have to admit I was not going to do one but Judi talked me into it. I took a break from my sp and drew up this.
It was fun cuz I just let my imagination go wild with my crayolas.

05-30-2005, 01:51 PM
I just love that Sults, is it Sonny and Cher? I have seen all of Richard Gere, good and bad, but I like him anyway. Thank you Sults and Connie. Your is coming along fine, Connie. :D

05-30-2005, 04:51 PM
Connie I love it.  .Yep thats her nose. :D
Sutry You picked a goody. These are awesome.

05-30-2005, 06:15 PM
Sultry, i kept seeing the reference to Sonny and Cher but I could not find the picture--I finally found it. Very nice--thanks for the bodies especially--

EVERYBODY, here is a picture where the ENTIRE attitude of the caricaturization is wholey dependent on the pose. She did not just go for a likeness in the face she went with body langueage and stylization of the pose--an expression of a moment. Remember that there are many different ways to get a likeness. Excellent work Sults!!!

05-30-2005, 06:43 PM
Hope you all had a good Memorial Day-even if the weather didn't co-operate here-it was nice.

Bon, Those are awesome!

JayD I think you've been challenged here

Hi Connie! Ah-twas Barbara-I guessed it from her upper lip, cheekbones and eyes mostly on the first submission-Nice drawing!
TEACHERS PET-no bodies for you to draw-LOL :D I agree on being somewhat nervous about doing a classmate too.

Hi Sults! That is wonderful-really took me back-my sister's first bell bottoms were just like Cher's only Orange  -LOL I do see Sonny in there especially and their attitudes in the facial expressions and bodies. Love it!

AND CJ AND DAVE! Where are you guys? :( :( :(

Okay, okay . . . I stole a few minutes from work today and did a quick caricature of . . . me. I focused on the nose, chin, and chubby cheeks, and made lots of eyelashes the way Rein told me not to! Hope this will do because I'm back to work . . . looks like until about Wednesday night. :o

05-30-2005, 08:57 PM
Hi CJ   Awwww I am sorry you had to work today and are still so-o-o busy :( but so glad to see you. Guess you will be around more as you are leding the next Class!   Really looking forward to it!
Nice job   But I think you can develop you more, but as you are so busy....I feel bad for you-too much work! We miss you so much!:(

Hey Guys-I know this is definatley not Caricature related but you have to see this awesome YOUNG artist. I am so amazed, found this link in the Inspirational Art forum. WOW! Check her out! (http://www.artakiane.com/)

Wow Judi, that child is not only a child prodigy but she is gorgeous. Her portraits are spectacular.

I've got to go look for a body for Richard Gere, rather make one up, sorry JayD.

05-30-2005, 11:21 PM
Judi, I know I could develop this more, and if I get time I'll work on it. Just can't do it for the next few days. We still have another week to go on this lesson, and a little less than that for the newspaper . . . so if the sketching class is week after next, I'll be ready!!!

And I'm really looking forward to learning more about sketching . . . so far that and still lifes are what I like best. And mountains. And rocks. But not people.

05-30-2005, 11:26 PM
Yep, you have the rest of this week and all of next week to work on it--I would like personally applaud you. Very brave of you to lampoon yourself.

05-31-2005, 12:35 AM
Sults - I think I missed that era, was busy having children and being very conservative. They look good, but have no clue who they are.
Jay - I will work more on Barbara, that is a freehand sketch, with the adjustments just done digitally.
These are (supposedly) classmates. Hope the scenes tell who they are.

05-31-2005, 09:28 AM
Thanks Mary, Bon, Judi & Jay I really enjoyed doodling Sonny & Cher it was kind of theraputic because I could not think but just scribble with my crayolas. I did not pay attention to anything like porportions. It made going back to my sp a lot easier ( I was able to see what was needed in it). I may just do my cartoons when I hit a block.

Sults - I think I missed that era, was busy having children and being very conservative. They look good, but have no clue who they are.
I think its understandable Connie, life is as we all know it :music: ~~~THE BEATS GOES ON~~~DRUMS KEEP POUNDING RYTHMS TO OUR BRAINS~~~LADEEE DADA DEEEEE~~~ :music:
LOL, Connie love your class interpertation, you are a great artist. :) I had already recognized Barbara S. b4. :)
edited to add... Judi I cannot believe the age that little girl did those Master Pieces WOW. ty for showing us. WOW I am amazed beyond words. (inserts smiley with jaw drop).

05-31-2005, 09:58 AM
Bon...once again very nice caricatures. I could not identify Nicholas Cage but the other two are so identifiable.

Connie...I think Striesand was very recognisable in your first sketch itself. Although you have lengthened her nose in the revised version, I think it should also have a slightly pinched look, or at least that is what I recall.

Sultry....your coloured sketches are marvellous, but I can't identify the characters.

05-31-2005, 10:13 AM
Judi...thanks for the gentle prodding. Here is my first attempt with a few more in the pipeline.

Hey Joe, Deb, Peter, Ann, Stacy, Blah, Barb...... WHERE ARE YOU GUYS?

Hi! I'm here reading along. I was away Sat and Sun for a wedding. Then was up most of Sunday night with a sick child - ear infection. We took her to the doctor's and got antibiotics yesterday, but she still had a bad day. Cried every time as soon as the pain med wore off. Luckily she slept through the night and was well enough to give school a try today. School is over on Friday so I would feel bad if she missed one of the fun last days.

I'm still in my art funk. I was working on drawing a grid for my house commission and even messed up that! Bad math - I made too many blocks. And this from someone with a degree in engineering. :o

Connie, I love the drawing of our classmates!! I can see the likeness from their self portraits but also know who they are from the scenes. Judi is jumping on the trampoline while her grandchildren watch and Mary is busy taking a picture of all of her grandkids. Great drawings and great creativity!! I think you get an A for this lesson. :D

Sults - Sonny and Cher are great! I recognized them right away. Your drawing took me right back to their variety show that I used to watch as a kid. Nice job! And I'm glad to read you used Crayola crayons...my hubby works for Binney & Smith who make Crayola products. He's in Research & Development so my girls get to try out lots of new products even before they are available in stores. They love it!

CJ - Nice work with drawing a characature (sp? ) of yourself. I like the eyelashes best! Hope your work on the newspaper goes smoothly. Is it just you and your husband who work on it or do you have other people helping? I'm looking forward to the sketching lessons because I really want to be able to learn to put ideas down on paper quickly. Right now I am really, realllllly slooooooooooow.

Blah! Good to see you back! :) We've missed you around here.Your drawing is as good as I remember it to be, but I don't recognize the person. Is it someone I should know?

Hi Mary and JayD! Hope I didn't forget anyone.

Well, gotta go get some chores done for the day. Happy drawing everyone!

05-31-2005, 11:07 AM
Hiyas Blah, umm I hope I am not wrong but you drew a earring that looks like a tennis racket. Is it Andre Agassi? If so, It sure looks like him. ;)
Hey Stacey I hope your little girl is alot better at school and enjoying the last days ( you can never replace them and it is good that you let her go).
Miss ya get over the block, hey doodling helped me, give it a try with your girl's crayola products. :D
CJ  Omg I am so sorry I just realized I did not comment on your cute sp cariacture. I like it and I hope you get some rest soon from your busy job.

05-31-2005, 11:31 AM
At least nobody threw anything. I think you can recognize them from the accompaniments, but I sketched them from the monitor and had fun. That feels like cheating after all the suffering I have done on the last few portraits.
CJ - very cute, love the eyelashes.
Blah - I didn't know who, but guess Stacey was right, very clever to put in the earring and quick of her to notice. Good overall drawing.

Blah, your's is very good and I agree with Sultry.

Sults, I think I will doodle and see if I come up with Richard's costume. :D

05-31-2005, 01:33 PM

Blah, Agassi would be my guess too. Nice work!

Connie-sorry I was wordless last nite on your drawing-It was late and just happened to catch it as you posted-LOL These are great!
I'm thowing roses! :)

Hi Mary and Sults!

05-31-2005, 09:36 PM
I have to confess that I am not up on my "Tennison"! :D So I did not recognize him--I did know that he was tennis related and the earring was a very slick and witty comment. Very clever. Also, Blah--I am glad you are back--I missed you.

05-31-2005, 10:07 PM
Well, worked a couple hours on this and it in no way resembles a caricature...it did in the beginning, but i lost it...it's more like a portrait... :o oh well :o back to the drawing board.

Stacy - welcome to Veteran-ship!

I am almost afraid to guess but judging from the dull eyes and the baseball cap and glasses, I would say that looks a bit like me. :D Although My moustaches is short (no sides)--hmmmm...is this me?

Hi everybody! Quitting work for the night, and I'm almost finished - one more night should do it, two at the most.

Sults, don't worry about not commenting on my caricature - it didn't deserve comment.

Judi I'm so very impressed with your portraiture and caricature talents - I think you've found your niche!!

Everyone else is doing so great, it almost inspires me to want to try more people . . . NAH! Another time. However, I'm very glad that these instructions will always be available for when I DO want to do portraits.

Good night classbuddies - sweet dreams!

06-01-2005, 12:28 AM
Wow Judy is that Jay or Cheech from Cheech & Chong (heh heh j/k  ) sorry just had to say that. (must be the baseball cap, nooooo its that mustache)

Hi Anita, OK hows this for motivation, take your favorite actor/ress or song artists and do a cariacture of them. Only, put you in the first row watching them.
Put you winning the Lottery
Make people with numbers (did you know Fred Flinstone's head was made with the #5? Now you do.
Or do one of your son, since you did a great portrait of him, a cariacture should be a breeze for you. All the facial features that gave you trouble, you can now draw bigger or smaller.

Mary, heres a tip for Richard's body......stop trying so hard. Just start doodling anyones body. after your all done then add costume or props.
If your still not sure of what to do with him, have his head popping out of a limo or a hot spa. You could even have him lying on a massage table with a towel over his whole body and only his feet showing. :D

06-01-2005, 03:37 AM
Judi...excellent caricature of Jay. Yes, I think it definitely qualifies as a caricature

CJ, Connie and others who have drawn caricatures of classmates...sorry if I have not commented. I have not yet gone through all the posts from Class13 to Class19 when you probably got to know how your classmates look, and am therefore unable to judge how good your efforts are.

Sultry...wonderful tips on how to do the body for this class - I particularly like the idea of a massage table with the towel over the body :D

Incidentally every time I go back to the earlier classes and read your current posts I am very impressed at how far you have progressed with your c&c

Jay, Thanks.....I can't tell you how much I missed your classes and all my classmates during the last two months. It feels really good to be back.

06-01-2005, 03:44 AM
Connie, Stacy, Sultry, Mary and Judi...thanks for looking and commenting. Yes...Agassi is who I attempted to caricaturise. The drawing took about about 30 to 40 minutes and I tried to slightly exaggerate the shape of his head, his nose and his smile.

Stacy....congratulations on your 500th post

06-01-2005, 06:54 AM
Hi Blah! Whew thanks, I am glad it qualifies, and I was worried no one would recognize him. Yes I am really glad you are back too! :)

JayD :D Yep, you. I know I went a little wild with the mustashe, but that was the fun part-Cheechy Teachy (LOL Sults) I didn't see sideburns-well- you need to post a recent pic :p

Mary, looks like a caricature that you would find in Vanity Fair. It's Gere Gone Wilde--Oscar Wilde that is :D Great work.

Judi--the dull eyes are a giveaway--they definitely DO NOT reflect everything that bounces around inside my head--the glasses and the baseball cap gave it away for me (I love baseball caps) but the moustache threw me off a bit so I thought ou had gone Chong on me as well. :D

Bonnie, you coward--get those caricatures out--I know you can!!!

Gee ty Blah for those good words ( I needed it). :)

No, JayD - that's Gere as the lawyer in "Chicago" - "Give 'Em The Old Razzle Dazzle" That's one of my favorite movies of all time . . . I have a VCR tape for the office TV and a DVD for the family room TV and sound track CDs everywhere!!!

06-01-2005, 11:52 PM
Bon - c'mon, I did it, and no one seemed bothered, though I was nervous before I posted. I really look forward to yours.
Mary - that is one suave Richard.
I re-did Dolly, this time as a drawing rather that just a sketch. Better effects, less likeness, I think. But I have piddled and tweaked enough.

06-02-2005, 12:14 AM
Hi Connie-Barbara is still there, better than ever!   (She is a fav of mine)
You are right- I wasn't offended nor do I believe was Mary. :D

Here is one with a body-no color yet-but we have a lot of time yet.
I think it needs more work-but I am really tired of her so she's done.

Mary Woodul
06-02-2005, 12:23 AM
Thank you JayD, it was fun doing. CJ, I also like him in Chicago. hank you , Sults, Judi and Connie.

Connie, she is really looking like Barbara now and Judy you've done a great one of Condaleeza as a cheerleader, lol.

Bon I'm dying to see what you come up with.

06-02-2005, 12:24 AM
Connie, Brilliant--you really nailed the likeness and I like the way you turned this from a sketch into a portrait.

Judi--You could do this professionally and you should think about it at some point. I dont recognize this one although she does look familiar.

You have nailed the likeness of a woman who has happily pulled the tails off of two poodles.

06-02-2005, 12:26 AM
Hi, CJ--Yep I know that--I was just givin' Judi the ol' razza ma tazz! :D Chicago has always been one of my favorite shows. I am a HUGE fan of the late choreographer Bob Fosse who originally conceived this show.

06-02-2005, 05:25 AM
Mary, Connie and Judi...excellent drawings from all of you  I can easily recognise Richard Gere and Barbara Streisand but not Condoleesa Rice who does not figure all that much in our news.

Incidentally how does one differentiate a good caricature from a poor portrait? I ask this because when I show my attempts to my wife and daughter they tell me that my caricatures look like failed portrait attempts. Although I have argued that I have retained some features unaltered and deliberately exaggerated others, I must confess that I think there must be more to drawing a caricature than mere distortion or exaggeration of features.

Judi...thank you for directing us to the child prodigy(Akiane ?)'s website. Very impressive work (and rather unnerving to think that at age 4 she could draw better than I can today).

06-02-2005, 07:25 AM
Hi Blah, TY
I am sure JayD will answer your question, as I surely don't know-think from now on I'll call all my failed portraits-caricatures-LOL :D
You know you are one of the few classmates we cannot do a caricature of-cause we don't have a ref

Mary  TY-I'm glad you recognized Ms. Rice, though i don't think I got her features as much as i did in the first one I posted.

JayD, TY! Can't quit the day job! Though I would love to for art...but gotta feed the fam!

Anita Murphy
06-02-2005, 12:36 PM

Here is my second attempt at a caricature. My mother and daughter guessed correctly and straight away too, but both felt that I had attempted a portrait and got it wrong.

In fact, today my daughter got me a book on how to draw cartoons and caricatures. I haven't gone through it yet.

Anita Murphy
06-02-2005, 02:32 PM
Judi and Blah - well, I'm amazed you both saw it.
This is addictive once you start!
2 more but the first just isn't right - can't figure out why not so will not be surprised if you can't get it.

06-02-2005, 02:38 PM
Is the second one Clooney?

Mary Woodul
06-02-2005, 03:22 PM
Blah, that is terrific! It is Colin Powell, isn't it? Anita you are very good also, immediately I saw it but Judi and Blah beat me to her. I can't make out the second one but the third is Clooney.

Well I just wanted to peak and say Hi! I should be finishing the preparations for my future daughter in law's wecoming party that I am having for her tomorrow here at home.

Judi, you are really an expert at cartoons. :D

06-02-2005, 06:07 PM
Hi All
Looks like you got busy Anita! Great job!  Definatley George Clooney, is the other a young Rock Hudson?

Blah, Great job on Colin Powell

Mary! Thank-you and have a great party! Enjoy!

06-02-2005, 06:22 PM
Hi everyone....
This thread inspired me a whole lot so here I am with my 8 minute sketch (I'm at school so I could scan this...don't tell my adviser!)
Chandu :D :o

Mary Woodul
06-02-2005, 06:26 PM
Wow, you are really good! George Bush :D

Hi Judi, thank you, I think I'm almost done except for those last minute things.

Anita Murphy
06-02-2005, 06:44 PM
Chandu - love it - brought a smile to my face!!!!

Fireman's kid
06-02-2005, 10:02 PM
Great characatures everyone! Although I must agree that Judi is at the head of the class on this lesson.

Anita, I think your second one (first one in the second group) is John Travolta - it's that chin. I also knew Sophia, so you definitely have the likeness. I recognized Clooney too.

Chandu - great job on Bush! The underwear made me laugh. :)

This looks like so much fun I might have to give it a try. Although like Blah, I'm not sure how to get a likeness while still having that cartoony feel. Also not sure if I can do portraits or cartoons, so if you don't see a post from me you'll never know if I didn't try or flubbed up big time.

06-02-2005, 10:13 PM
Anita - Sophia I guessed out right, recognized Clooney when I saw the name. The other looks very sympathetic, just on the tip of my tongue, but don't get it yet.
Blah - not sure how, but you need to exaggerate some part more for a caricature vx portrait. Good as a portrait, though. I used some extraneous material to emphasize mine, not just the face.
Thinking about it, I guess I did a caricature of myself before doing a real self-portrait. That was me in the dark glasses after the cataract surgery. I am willing to be the butt if anyone is bashful about using class members for this exercise.

06-02-2005, 10:45 PM
Hi, everybody--been busy tonite--I am finally getting in (late) my financial info for Warren Wilson--I lost my W2 forms which are required so my office looks like something that fell on a witch in OZ. Found the forms. Whew!!! Oh and just got my first ever tuition bill for 10,000 which is due July 1st. Yep, I'm going to have to take up being a gigolo! :D

Blah--a good caricature has all of the attributes of a first class portrait. Look at some of the links that I have provided in the opening lecture. You will see that, in fact everyone from John Tenniel to Jason Seiler treat the subject as if they are doing a serious portrait. In other words, they never forsake their technical skill for the gag so do these with all the seriousness of a portrait. Look at connies Barbara Streisand. It started out as a rough sketch but ended up portraitesque with an exaggerated nose. Same with Judi, Bon, and others but do check out those links.

06-03-2005, 12:28 AM
Chandu-Love that-8 minutes! LOL   So-o-o glad you posted!

Anita-I'm still betting on Rock as the unknown.

Well JayD-looked better at the caricature links and did some more browsing-
But too late for this one-guess who..

Good nite :)

Anita Murphy
06-03-2005, 04:40 AM
Judi - has to be Stallone.

Going to redo my unknown as it obviously isn't right - no-one has got it.

06-03-2005, 06:51 AM
Anita-Not Stallone-but I do see him there as you mention him! I probably would have guessed the same.
I'll give you a hint-set foot in the USA 41 years ago. This is a much younger caricature of him, not recent.

06-03-2005, 07:40 AM
This would be Paul McCartney. Look at those eyes. Judi--you should seriously consider stick with this--you have a real talent for this.

Mary Woodul
06-03-2005, 08:55 AM
I go with JayD, Paul when the Beetles were becoming famous. JayD I hope you finish up with your paper work soon, if you hate it as much as me, it can be nightmare.

Judi, we should find a carciature contest for you. :D

Hi Anita, Stacey, Connie and all of the class.

Hey, a question for all of you about how Wet Canvas is functioning now.

I have my options set to view attachments right in the post - not as a thumbnail that can be enlarged by clicking on it. But ever since WC was down, I only get thumbnails. I checked my options settings and nothing has changed. Is anyone else experiencing this? I find it annoying to have to click on each thumbnail to see it. What can I say...I'm not known for my patience. :o :p

Haven't started on a caricature yet. Hubby threw out the reference I wanted to use before I asked him for it. Need to find a new one. Also just realized that I haven't checked out the links at the beginning of the lesson yet. Need to do that too.

I did however post an update on my child drawing so you will all know that I haven't given up entirely.

Well, I must be off. Time to get ready to take the girls to school for their last day of the year!

Anita Murphy
06-03-2005, 09:50 AM
Stacy - mine is doing that too with the thumbnails. If you use the Quicklink posting method you will get large images. Last day of school? Already? My son is still on half term break and wont finish till 1st July and most schools in UK finish towards the end of July! Mind you they don't start again till September, except this is my baby's last year in school!

Judi - and I call myself a Brit! Guess I was stuck on the idea of American celebrities. Cos it is so Paul now that you mention it! Jay is right, you could make a living at this!

Worked on mine a little more - hope its more obvious who it is :(

06-03-2005, 10:31 AM
Wow these are totally awesome all.You guys rock.
Umm ya can't wait to see what?.

06-03-2005, 10:50 AM
Anita-It's Carey Grant!

06-03-2005, 10:56 AM
Wow is right Great one Judi of Paul I saw it in his eyes right away :) I also like your cheerleader but I still do not know who she is. I think Jay is right, you could freelance or even do it at a local craft fair (once a year) and make some $ for your art supplies.

Anita yup it looks like CG to me too. :). All though the eyes and dress give me a feeling of 007, hmmm did he ever do a spy movie too?

Anita Murphy
06-03-2005, 10:58 AM
YAY - obviously the improvements worked!!!!!!!
Not sure if he ever did a spy movie.

06-03-2005, 01:06 PM
Hey Sults!  The cheerleader is Condeleeza Rice w/ a 'B' on the sweater for Bush.

Yeh Anita-ya nailed him! :D

Hi Bon, Everyone is waiting for you caricatures of JayD and Sults :D

06-03-2005, 11:14 PM
Heh Heh Judi, nice try but Bon has drawn me twice already and I do think she may be looking to do something new with Jay. So, who ever you have decided to render Bon I know it will look great. Who do you plan to put in fantasy land now from class? huh? lol :cat: Maybe it is Judy but not with a y but with a i lol. JUDI. Touche Judi :D

You know Judi I was thinking about what we were talking about on the phone and you could make a game out of Paul if you wanted to. make up new hair dos. Do a Stallone style & put a Rambo or a (wife beater) t shirt on him and you have SS orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr put a 50's duck tail on him and a fancy white pant suit and you have Elvis. :cat: The way you did the sad eyes and the mouth he could pass for all 3 characters by fixing the suite. Who knows, you may even be able to get another character out of that face just by hair dos and apparel you chose to use.

06-03-2005, 11:21 PM
So thats what ya all mean.LOL
Well for one thing sultry dear you have an amazing bone structure in that swwet innocent lil face of yours and I would never get tired of drawing you. :D .Well now I guess i have to draw JayD and sultry hah.Oboy this will be fun lol
I'm pretty busy and don't have time for no art til monday than JayD and sultry is all mine. :cat:

06-04-2005, 12:06 AM
Well, now I am nervous. :D

06-04-2005, 12:08 AM
Hey Present--I dont recall him doing a spy movie but his hitchcock period had him presented in spy-like situations like North by Northwest. After that Grant went out of his way to present his film image as that of a family man.

06-04-2005, 04:10 AM
Anita....Yes the redone version is definitely Cary Grant. He is one of my all-time favourite actors. When you posted him earlier I thought he was one of the James Bonds who appeared in just one or two 007 movies(not Connery, Lazenbie, Moore or Brosnan)...I can't remember his name.

Judi....I agree with the rest; your work is awfully good and you have a flair for doing caricatures.

I find the Basic 101 class chatting about doing caricatures of one another. Where do you have these reference pictures? Is it in one of the threads that I have missed?

Chandu...sorry I haven't commented on your work. It is very good and even better than very good for just 8 minutes

Jay...I have taken note of your suggestions and will try to do a better job on my next caricature.

Anita Murphy
06-04-2005, 09:04 AM
Jay - how could I forget North by Northwest - what an amazing movie! I think one of my favourites was "To catch a thief".

Blah - do you mean Timothy Dalton?

06-04-2005, 09:35 AM
lol Blah since noone piped in about their photos (which you could find most of them in class 18) I will be the culpret. I am already going to be done by Bon, so you can find Mary, Anita, Connie, Joe, Dave and of course JUDI there to do. (inserts devilish bratty big :D) Many others but those are the names that come to mind right now.

Mary Woodul
06-04-2005, 09:51 AM
Good morning everyone! Got to go ranching JayD but I will take something to do another caricature.

Anita, are you getting this terrible heat? San Luis never get's this hot we are not prepared for it. I'm literally melting away. :( You got Cary Grants expression very well in the caricature.

Sults, big, big hug and I will try to PM you tomorrow everning.

Hi, Bon, Blah and Judi.

Anita Murphy
06-04-2005, 10:59 AM
Mary - no the heat isn't so bad - it never really gets that hot here. Just the pollution gets really bad. Starting to get rain in the evenings too so that helps.

Ooooh Sults - have to get our own back on you now!!!!

06-04-2005, 11:37 AM
Hugs everyone love you all btw even if I am a bratt.

Sooooooooooooo sorry Chandu, I meant to comment too, I agree with Blah :)
Chandu...sorry I haven't commented on your work. It is very good and even better than very good for just 8 minutes

seeeeeee Anita, I was not the only one who thought of 007. :) lol Blah did too.
I thought he was one of the James Bonds who appeared in just one or two 007 movies(not Connery, Lazenbie, Moore or Brosnan)...I can't remember his name.

Ooooh Sults - have to get our own back on you now!!!!
Heh Heh Bring it on Sista, I have my pencils ready for a SHOW DOWN :D :wink2: :p

06-06-2005, 06:49 AM
Anita, Timothy Dalton is who I had in mind, but I have only a vague recollection of how he looked then.

Sultry, thank you for pointing out where the photographs are. Will run over there and take a look.

I am going away in a few hours and won't be back for a couple of days. See you all then.

06-06-2005, 10:18 AM
UMM UMM well I tried lol
How I see them as a cartoon. :D
Who are they?

Anita Murphy
06-06-2005, 10:23 AM
JayD and Sults are my guess.

06-06-2005, 11:54 AM
I like the one of sults....my....my....my....actually, I love it. How did you know my feet were large and splayed out like the fins of a fish? Round glasses are a nice touch.

Mary Woodul
06-06-2005, 12:39 PM
Awe, Bon, I think the one of JayD is so cute and Sultry is the sweet Sultry, she is. Those are very good.

Anita, I'm still roasting, send me some of your rain. :crying:

06-06-2005, 01:17 PM
Thank you lol
They was kinda quickies but I had to try them. :D

06-06-2005, 01:17 PM
Hi Mary-It's really hot and muggy here too!

Hi Bon! Really good caricatures!!   :D

06-06-2005, 02:15 PM
Bon - These are so good, and I am trying to pick out what makes them special. I think you are not afraid to go dark right away, helping the drawing tremendously. That doesn't mean I don't see the talent, just one facet that I can improve for myself.

06-06-2005, 02:38 PM
thank you
Yes I do go dark mostly at first.to find the areas that make them look like them.I'm a deep drawer anyways.Alot of the problem I have is I go to light on the light shades.

Anita Murphy
06-06-2005, 04:57 PM
LOL Mary
We may have the rain in the evening but I bet you have the fresh air!

Mary Woodul
06-06-2005, 05:37 PM
Hi Judi, I was wondering about you, I was missing you.

Hi Connie

Bon, I just love your full body elf drawing. Don't miss it, everyone on the main forum.

Anita, yes we have the clean air, but there is not even a leaf moving, we've been going up to 35. San Luis usually has Mexico City's temperature without the rain.

A lot of you must not understand why I am complaining because I know so many of you get a lot more heat. There is no air conditioning in San Luis, it has never been needed. :crying:

06-06-2005, 06:41 PM
Hi Mary- Missed you too! My Baby brother and SIL came in to visit so had a really nice weekend.
How did your party go?
I'm suprised you never had a need for A/C in SLP as I just looked up your city and it is pretty far south. Are you at a high elevation?

I'll be calling Sults in an hour or two and I'll let ya all know how she is doing.
Don't want to bother her too early, that's why I am waiting, but she is expecting my call.

Oh, and I got my Advanced Drawing Technique's book today from Matti-got number 157. :D
Anita  -did you ever get thru to him for a copy?

Anita Murphy
06-06-2005, 07:16 PM
No I didn't Judi - got no answer :crying:

Mary Woodul
06-06-2005, 08:03 PM
Judi, I'm glad to know you are going to call Sults, I have been thinking of her all day and praying. Please let me know.. How nice that you had company. The party went fine and now after all of the stress, I feel much better and I think Sofěa was very happy. Yes, the city of San Luis is on a plateau and quite high, but the state has a jungle part that is low and very, very hot.

I have not received my book from Matti but I got the confirmation right away. It has been about three weeks. I'm trying to figure out what to draw.

06-06-2005, 08:11 PM
Thanks everyone.
Sultry prays with you gf.
umm gee whats this book everyone is waiting on?
Mary thank you gf.I was forced into doing full body of elf princess lol. It's daves and JayD's fault lol
Hmm maybe I should try that rose?
Here's my last one.

06-06-2005, 08:50 PM
Hi All from Sults-  She thanks everyone for the prayers.
She's doing OK, a little dizzy-which is normal from the anesthesia. She's taking some motrin and feels a bit swollen. But really she sounded good.
She said if she doesn't stop in tonite she will for sure tomorrow.

Bon---- I told her she's got to see your caricatures. She giggled when I told her she was wearing a bikini! :D :D
Matti Kataja's Advanced Drawing Techniques is the book Bon. I want to try the fire and ice-his drawings are beautiful!

06-06-2005, 08:54 PM
We cross posted lol
Judi thank for the update.Sultry rest and drink losta whiskey.Well I wouldn't but it sounded good. :D
Ohh cool Judi,I remember the fire n ice.Awesome.
JayD didn't notice his feet was on backwards UMM WORNG WORDS ? LOL

Cathie Jones
06-06-2005, 09:51 PM
Thanks for the update, Judi - I'm sure we're all worried about Sults and hoping she'll be good as new and back with us soon . . .

06-06-2005, 11:13 PM
Hi CJ!!!! You got out of the office?!? We miss ya!
Well, it was going well at first but I over exaggerated the chin way too much. Ten dollars if you can guess this one-it'll be hard-not happy with it. :(
I feel I ruined a beautiful woman!
Oh well, win some lose some :D

06-07-2005, 10:06 AM
Judi, I am so sorry but I do not know who that pretty girl is.:( She looks familar though.
Ty Judi for telling everyone for me & ty everyone for your prayers I really truly appreciate it.
I would like you to even pray for my gf Jyvonne who has such a wonderful heart and is now not able to do things like she is so used to. I think she is a fighter and I just would like you to know her if you do not already, she has posted in the main forum her condition and I am so sad about this.
Please say a prayer for her, she is a trooper.
Well I did these a while ago and I have changed the faces (this morning) to look like VIPs in Fantasy land most of the time.

Mary Woodul
06-07-2005, 11:41 AM
OMG Sultry,   where are you? Are you home already? How are you?

Your drawings are so sweet looking. I'm so happy you are around here. :D

Mary Woodul
06-07-2005, 11:42 AM
Judi, sorry, I forgot to comment on your drawing. I don't think I know who she is either. :o

06-07-2005, 12:47 PM
Hiyas Mary I am doing ok, I cannot believe what can be done medically now a days. I went to 1 Day surgery. A little about it, I went in with Carmelo's daughter (who just graduated from nursing school  ) by my side ( she sensed my anxiety). She is a sweetheart and made me think of other things, when they started the IV I did get a little nausiated and it was her idea to give me oxygen. That did help till they wheeled me to OR and then my anxiety took over when I saw so many green coats coming at me from all sides. One was shooting anesthesia in my IV & the other was taking my other arm and laying it on a pad. When the stuff went in my IV I was gone and then I awoke in recovery. I will tell you, I did not even get to see my Dr. they could have anyone work on me. I would of never known. lol
Christina (Carmelo's daughter) was there for me in Recovery too. I felt of you too ty very much. I was so amazed on how many things they do now in 1 Day. I had my gall bladder removed a few years ago & stayed in the hospital 2 weeks, do you know sitting next to me in recovery was a lady who had that same surgery? Another was recovering from cataracts, another from polups being removed. There was like 30 people they did in 1 Day like an assembly line. It just blew me away.
Today my tummy is so bloated and sore to the touch but I am ok as long as I take my medicine. It feels like a really bad bladder infection if I was to compare it to a certain pain.
Ohhh Bon I am sooooo sorry for not commenting earlier, I love Jay & my pics you did. LOL What is Jay holding? OH, you see me as a slave gf? ha ha  :p :cat:

06-07-2005, 01:35 PM
Mary  -You are not the one that should be embarrassed-I should be for posting it-LOL. I'll see if I can get her more recognizable. :D

Hi Sults!

Cathie Jones
06-07-2005, 02:44 PM
Sults! You're a toughy, gf - glad you're home and well enough to be online!

Outpatient surgery is wonderful, isn't it? I had the gallbladder thing that way in 1995 - I was home the same day and back to work 3 weeks later!! There are many new medical miracles out there for you . . . that's why we know you'll be as good as new!!

Judi, when I saw the thumbnail I thought of Bette Midler, but it's not her. Then I saw a pic of Lindsay Lohan on the Internet yesterday, and it looks like her from the eyes up. I give up, too . . . but then I'm not up on the new celebrities, so it's probably someone I've never seen! LOL I recognized Cary Grant right away.

See ya . . .

06-07-2005, 07:08 PM
Hi y'all!

Its been a while but I got some realllllly good excuses!
1- Unexpected company
2- WC server was down
3- Planned company
4- Cut open right thumb making salad ( Right handed)
5- Thumb was healing nicely when I cut a chunk out of the tip of my right ring finger while drying a knife.

That should buy me some time or at least a little sympathy for being a klutz. :D

I did finish my SP with the corrections suggested and also finished my grandduaughter's portrait for the following lesson which I will post in the appropriate lessons shortly, then it is off to try and catch up reading the posts and this lesson.

Missed y'all

Mary Woodul
06-07-2005, 08:39 PM
Nice to see ya Joe. :D Take care of those fingers and let us know when you post your grandaughters portrait.

06-07-2005, 08:50 PM
Mary I just posted it in lesson 19. Please C&C!!!

06-08-2005, 05:48 PM
I'm a little slow, but in the spirit of the game, I'm thinking of you, Gal.

06-08-2005, 06:47 PM

Hey Connie! Great job! :D :D That's good medicine for Sults!

Bon, YOU are your last one! :D Beautiful! Yes it has been fun for sure-just missing a few Class members :(
I know Ann is pretty busy and will be back after the fourth, Barb has a situation, Dave is busy too-We miss you guys! Vasill and Peter are MIA and I believe Michelle is pretty busy too if I remember the last round-up correctly.(Hope I got everyone)

Hi CJ and Mary!

JAYD-Hey you out there Boss????? :(

I'm still trying to make mine recognizable Bon-LOL :D
But they are working me to the bone at least till the 23rd.....long, long days. :crying: :crying:

Hey Joe :music: -you do have my sympathies! That's a lot of good excuses...my dog ate my homework would have sufficed-LOL :D
Do hope your injuries are healing. :)

06-08-2005, 08:36 PM
Hey Connie, that is an adorable portrait of Sults. You are always so positive and cheery in your attitude. I just love the colored flowers.

Bon, I don't know how I had missed your's. I'm sure I have seen that face but I don't know who it is.

Hi Judi, hope you get some rest from work.

Hi CJ!

I wanted to do another drawing but I'm trying to get my painting muse back, she left me. :crying: Now I started a completely different style with charcoal drawn apples over acrylic. I want to stain the apples with a little red ink. Awe shuks, I don''t know what I want to do with it. :o

06-08-2005, 09:22 PM
Wow Connie I am honored and ty for also making me a nice Get Well Card. :) I like how you drew me skinny too. hee hee Pretty flowers too, I see tulips in there (how did you know they are one of my favorite flowers?) I like them as much as I like Calle Lillies. I think tulips look like little colorful graceful fancy models standing so still on the runway. They are such a delicate and delightful flower. Of course a perfect flower to give as a get well gift. :)

Bon :( oh well, I guess my meds did not help me when I drew Bonnie & Clyde. it is suppose to be you and Murray. I did it from the same pic I think Al did of you on your website. I did Murray from his profile pic. :o gee I tried, oh gee I spent 15 minutes on them all together. I drew them up awhile ago and just recently changed the faces to look like you two, I only did that in 2 minutes. Maybe if I spent more time on them and not so drugged up. lol

Bon I agree with Judi, isn't that you?

Hiyas Judi, Mary, CJ, Stacy, & Joe.

06-08-2005, 09:42 PM
I think your right, hey I answered you in the Scribble thread too. Nite Nite Mary, I am hitting that pillow of sweet dreams now. & A BIG SWEET DREAMS To you too. :cat:

Hi everybody! I'm here, just mostly lurking while I try to get some painting skills back (don't know where it went!) and waiting for JayD to be ready for sketches. Got a bunch of them scanned tonight so I'll be ready to post these and do more. I love sketching, even though some of them are truly AWFUL!

GROUP HUG (be gentle with Sults)!!!

06-09-2005, 12:03 AM
Hi, Everybody--I am a bit under the weather--been sick all week so I have been limiting my activities. Also, last night I took one too many sleeping pills to help me go to sleep--I have been the living dead all day. Starting to wear off so hopefully, I can get back to business.

I found a program that you guys should check out called "The GIMP". It is another FREE graphics program. You can get it at download.com. It is almost as good as photoshop. Take a look at it when you get the chance.

CONNIE--NOW THAT"S what I am talking about! It's perfect!!!

06-09-2005, 07:13 AM
Hiyas CJ & Jay
Awe CJ is your Muse slacking off with Mine & Mary's Muses? They must be having a nice time basking in the sun and rejuvinating themselves for us. Just think of when they come home and how much more we will know. ;)

Awe Jay sorry to hear your underweather still and please becareful with those pills. (inserts shaking finger smiley with other hand on hip).

Sults - hope you are feeling much better. I have my fingers crossed for you!

Mary - has the weather cooled down at all? I think you must have sent it to us now, hot and dry again (I thought it was supposed to rain through to November here!). Luckily I thrive in the heat - the hotter the better!

Jay - hope you are feeling better too.

Connie - I love your Sults picture! Very recognisably her!

Cathie - I'm with you on the painting. I've had a canvas sitting on my easel for weeks and only just managed to finish it but felt like I had never painted before while doing it! Couldn't get anything to work the way I wanted it to.

Anyone I missed - Hi, how are you doing?

I am struggling with not enough hours in the day. I want to paint (really want to get to grips with portraiture), want to draw, have to study computer networks and just found out that I am about to get my US citizenship, so am having to add studying US history and civics to the mix too. I'd also made a resolution to be more healthy so trying to work some sort of fitness regime into my day means I really should get up at 3:00am and not go to bed till 2:45am. And I am one of the lucky ones who doesn't work (at the moment).
How do you guys fit art into a day that includes having to work?????

Oh, and I wanted to ask if anyone knows about Derwent Drawing pencils - I found a range of these in the same display as the graphite pencils at my art shop. They come in a minimal range (Brown Ochre, Ivory Black, Chocolate, Chinese White, Venetian Red, Terracotta). I couldn't resist buying them but can't decide if they are CPs or what. Anyone know anything about them?????

Good morning everyone! Sultry, I'm glad to see you around, that is good news, I hope you feel better. One of us better go lasso those muses.

CJ, I am also anxiously waiting for next class to see if I improve any.

JayD, take care and be carefull. I had an ordinary cold that turned into a bad sinus infection last week. It must be this climate. Thank you for the link. That sounds like fun.

Anita, the heat is worse today. I heard on the news that we are supposed to have ten more days of this. I used to say the same thing about hot weather because I don't like the cold weather, but I guess I have just been too lucky living in a mild climate place. BTW Anita I bought some Derwent pastel pencils and I love them but I have really have never done pastels so I don't know if i am using them the right way. I also bought the Derwent graphite pencils that I love, now I can't live without them.

Judi, I really don't know how it can be 'my' class, other than posting some sketches (bad ones, at that!) that I did in Tahiti. I'm as anxious to learn how to sketch as you are!

However, if it is my class, I promise you can get rowdy!! Everyone (except me) has been working so hard, it's about time to bust loose!!

Yeeeehaaawwwww . . . :D

06-09-2005, 07:45 PM
Somebody let Dave know that the next lesson will be...

Time to get ROWDY!!!!!

We got us a newbie substitute!!!!!!!

Cathie, if you are subbing, it is your class to lead--I will do the class write up but you're pullin' the thread on this one. Relax though--you know how this works--we will be helping each other. Rest assured that I will be around.

Michael Jackson is the first - I'm amazed we didn't have a bevvy of him seeing as how he has such "good" features for this exercise!
Not sure about the second though.

Cathie Jones
06-10-2005, 04:40 PM
The second one is Burt Reynolds! Very good, Joe!

06-10-2005, 05:24 PM
Hey Joe :music: Nice work there! Michelle( :D ) and JayD's double!
Great job on the features on Michael!

OH YEA judi (That is my favorite of all of your cariactures) You did her so pretty and so perfect with the hair, short mini & singing wide mouth. I love IT~~~~KAV ~~~~
I knew her with out even clicking it to enlarge. TINA TURNER no one can sing and shake like her. lol I love the way she sang " Rolling Down the River"
Hey Joe, You did a white MJ & how come you did not do BR as his playgirl centerfold pic????? Huhhh? lol Great Job
Hiyas CJ now did you put a devil icon up for us to guess who it is? Sorry I am confused. lol

06-10-2005, 10:45 PM
Hey, Joe--your second one reminds me of Joseph Stalin. I saw marvelous piece in which Peter Falk played Stalin and your drawing looked similar. Your michael is very good.

Judi--if you dont consider doing this seriously, I will hunt you down and tsk tsk tsk you until you do. You have a natural talent for this!

Sultry & JayD....glad to see that both of you are better; hope you get well soon.

Bon...wonderful drawing.....as usual.

Judi.....fantastic caricature of Tina Turner    Like Sultry, I too recognised her (Mind you, not guessed) from the thumbnail itself.

Jim....very recognisable caricatures of Michael Jackson and Burt Reynolds.

06-11-2005, 07:49 AM
Thanks All, she was 'funner' to draw than the previous one. :D

JayD  -if I knew how to 'go somewhere' with this-or with any drawing, I would.

Off to work :crying: :crying: :crying:
