View Full Version : Blue Iris wip

04-10-2005, 08:16 PM
This is another one I will be posting progress to as I go along. So far, it's mostly harder pastels & one layer. It's on Wallis! I finally got brave enough. It's different so I have to get used to it. The first photo is the reference from the RIL by Troy. I can't resist flowers this time of year.

What a great start you have from a strong reference photo. The way you handled the background will keep the focus on the flower. Iris have such interesting structure. Great colors in this one - glad you are sharing this.

04-13-2005, 02:43 PM
I got a few minutes to work on the buds. I don't know if I did anything else.

04-14-2005, 02:05 AM

Wow, will be stoppin' by to see the rest...

I did manage to work on the buds & the left petal a little. There's about to be a pause while I finish the Boston terrier commission http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=264779.

04-16-2005, 04:45 AM
Got my munchies and coffee and am all pulled up to watch this one's development. Irises are so beautiful and yours is doing the flower great justice.

04-16-2005, 06:57 PM
This is awesome! I love the iris; I'm too chicken to paint them, though! Hmmmm....maybe this summer........ :p

04-16-2005, 10:49 PM
Western girl, iris aren't too hard. Just draw & paint in the shapes of shading you see. That shows up the shape of the petals.
So far, I've only been using some cheap pastels & Rembrandt, Grumbacher. Now that I have a layer all over I'll start using my soft Senneliers.

Hi Tammy

This is coming along beautifully and I just love the color of the background!!

05-18-2005, 09:04 PM
Now that I finished that Boston Terrier commission I'm back to my iris. Today I added some softer pastels to two of the petals & lightened the background around the iris.
If you use a foam peanut to blend does it affect the glow like using your finger does?

Very nice, looking forward to see it finished

I love the iris painting and thank you so much for doing it as a WIP. I have so much to learn.

I checked out your Boston Terrier painting. EXCELLENT

I hope the Buyer was thrilled (they should have been).

Great work.

I'll be watching it too. Looking great already!

I decided today it was a little too dark IRL. I don't want it to look dull if it hangs without tons of light. It's hard though to lighten without changing shapes & relationships of values. I've got to stop & didn't get everything back to the right comparison & shape yet. Update when I can....we have a sick dog too. I'll try to post about that in the scumble when I get time.

Sorry to hear about your doggie, it's always worrisome. But, oh my, how this Iris is coming along. It's beautiful.

Iris is beautiful.......can not wait to see it finished....love your background also!!!...

Keep up the good work

I think I've tweaked all the values & edges pretty well now on the main flower. Next will be the buds. I thought I'd put the last version next to the new one.

Lovely. Looking forward to the Iris blooming here.

I've finished the buds. Now I've got to decide if I'm going to tweak the background any....maybe a little.

Tammy this is stunning!

:o Thanks. Here's the final product. The bottom is a little darker than real life. That's one of the things I tweaked...the right bottom had been too dark.

This is really beautiful and vibrant

05-28-2005, 10:42 PM
I am truly loving it. Keep it up! It is coming along beautifully.

05-29-2005, 07:06 PM
OK, for you who didn't notice I said final product....I'll let you help me decide on a mat color. Which one? two white, white with light blue or white with medium blue?

Tammy- I like the last one too. I showed these to my husband who does my matting and framing and he also voted for the last one, and actually he said maybe the darker blue mat for the inner mat with the lighter blue on the outside..but then again he does not like white mats....

I'm with Starjoy's husband. This drawing is so vibrant, full of colour AND relatively dark, I think introducing pure white mat, especially on the outside which covers a larger area, is a mistake. It's too stark, creates too much contrast (and you want it to accentuate the drawing not fight with it), and hence takes away from the impact of the art. I would actually go with a nice light greenish (close to the colour in the background) on the ouside and darker blue on the inside. Or reversed. Play some more.

BTW, STUNNING PAINTING!!!!! I have been watching it with amazement.

P.S. Edited for spelling mistakes!

I vote for the last one, as well.

It turned out superbly!

If I'm not too late to vote...I've chosen the last one too.
It turned out great Tammy!!!
