This might sound a stupid question, but I think that I read somewhere that you can underpaint pastels with washes of turps ...even work pastel into the wet turps. Is this right?

Oil pastels Imp, and you can work them with a brush and turps. With soft pastels you can make a kind of a wash with water or work over watercolour washes when dry.

Yes, you can, Impetuous, although I personally feel it is a waste of pastel and you have to be careful about which surfaces you use it on. It will dissolve some and pit others.

I usually use watercolor or watered down acrylic paint to tone paper.

Thank you Billy and Roan for the advice:)
I was actually on about soft pastels ...have to agree with you Roan about the waste factor (they are so expensive and wear fast!) Billy, I hadn't thought about the turps and oil pastels, that actually sounds quite fun!
Bec:)

Hi Bec! I love using oil pastel & a paint thinner. Here's one I did a long time ago with graphite, oil pastel and mineral spirits.
