View Full Version : Bear & bunnies WIP

Doesn't look like much yet but it's a start. I have three colors down to get the base color for the bear. Beige, yellow ochre and light umber. I'll add darks over this foundation but for now I want to establish something of the values without getting into details. I'm not going for a realism in color but a pleasing simple combination harmonious with the bunnies.

What a great drawing! I love it, looking forward to seeing more.
Both my boys had "Bears & Bunnies" as their nursery themes, so I have a soft spot for the combination :)

Tommy, (can I call you Tommy or is that overfamiliar?)
You better be a famous, published illustrator, 'cause you are one talented dude. I love this--loved the initial sketch. Love the furry texture you are getting with just those few colors. I'll keep this thread close at hand so I can watch your progress. What colors are you planning for the bunnies?
Is this on the board that you usually use for your work? Please keep sharing!

Katherine, I don't know what a drafting brush is. I just use pencils, exacto blades (for removing stuff) and erasers for removing more stuff.
Tommy's fine Kathy. And I'm not published yet but I'm hoping. :D
Lily, seems I picked a familiar combo. The first thing they tell you in illustrating children's pb is don't do bunnies LOL.

The brush is for all those teeny weeny little bits that seem get on to the surface of the piece and give you little bumpy marks - which get quite irritating when you want a nice smoooth plate finish.
Some people use a brush which is very soft and looks like.............I can't think of anything that looks like it. Anyway I use a wide paint brush - easier to keep to hand - does the job just the same
My impression with children's books is that doing the text and the illustrations is the easy bit compared to coming up with something which is genuinely original.
Katherine
PS When are you coming out of your red haze? I've always been direct! But you don't have to answer! :D

I never heard of this brush Katherine. It smooths the texture?

Glad you're doing a wip on this!
A drafting brush is just to keep your paper tidy - you use it to brush away excess pencil and eraser shavings.
They're only 2.50 - 6 dollars. I love mine because I get a lot of pencil shavings on my paper with the gritty paper I work on.

My technique is a little different Kathy. I don't press into the paper hard so I probably don't get as much dust as you guys do.

Oh, Nicole, you're so discreet! Yah, I've covered my pieces with spit, and let's not even talk about sneezing!
So these days, I use a slip sheet and keep my drafting brush in my trusty right hand. Since I'm using Arches rough press these days, I think there's lots more colored pencil dust than if I was using my beloved and much-missed Arches hot press.

This is simply amazing work - you could spend hours and hours looking at all these images and then really studying them to see how they all work. The composition, design, technique - everything seems to be excellent - and yet I've never heard of this lady. Does anybody know her work?
Katherine
PS Thank you Tommy - you can keep introducing links like that (more, more!) - I love looking at people's websites. The only problem being it means I always want to rethink mine - which means it's gets even further away from publication!

Well I've looked at her website a bit longer and the bio on her New York Gallery site (on Madison Avenue) and it would appear that this lady has been a CP artist for a very long time indeed - and her work was included in the The Best of Coloured Pencil Artists I and II (I wish they'd resurrect this series and print them again!)
But she doesn't seem to go in for competitions and I couldn't find a reference to CPSA in her bio so maybe she's one of those people who don't place much store by competitions and membership of societies? She certainly doesn't look like she's needed them!

She's been around a long time yes.
One of the nicest ideas I've heard about, was where she, Janie Gildow and 2 or 3 other artists, selected a set of 'things' (a dish, elephant statue, you know that sort of stuff) and they each created works with it....one did her work, packed the items all up, mailed it off to the next artist who created unique work and packed it off again. Incredible work was created that way. Janie sent me a few of them (scanned format) outstanding work!

Thank you Katherine and please everyone, C & C are welcomed and needed. Here are the bunnies from the first illustration together with the second one. Do they look bunny enough? Have I lost the look of them or does anything need alteration. Please let me know. I've adjusted the color of the darker bunny so that's pretty ok now (not shown in this version). How about the color of the cloud? Are the bear's claws ok? Are they looking too fake or too large? (that was a previous crit)
Thank you all for being so supportive throughout. :)
BKWYRM
03-12-2005, 09:00 AM
Tommy, so the darker bunny is the same color in both? They are definitely "bunny" enough, and adorable.
Okay, my only nitpick is the color of the bear's claws. THe rest of the color palette is harmonious, so his claws look bonelike, which pops out of my monitor. If they were yellower, or beige-y.....The cloud really works for me because it's cool and blue vs. the warmth of the fur colors.
brynmr
03-12-2005, 09:09 AM
Cool! Thanks Kathy! :D
Katherine T
03-12-2005, 09:15 AM
The bunnies look adorable, if the two darker bunnies are the same bunny the colours are reading different on my monitor so if they were part of the same story you'd need to do something.
I'm wondering whether there might a hint of apricot in the cloud - picking up on left hand bunnies colouring - but I guess that depends on what time of day it is. It'd make it seem dreamy - and I just get a sense of dreaminess when looking at this picture.
Have the bunnies got names? I think you said at the beginning but I can't remember where without scrollong back and reading all the posts (not that that wouldn't be nice to do - but lunch and Venice calls!)
Claws - I agree, they're too 'french polish' at the moment for me. I think I'd like to see a nice civilised bone shade - maybe beige with a tad of sky blue added for the shading(?) - they're looking a bit too flat at the moment. It would be good to pick up the blue from the cloud somewhere in the main grouping and claws might be a sensible place.
Hope this helps
Katherine

On taking another look, I agree with Kathy that the claws jump out at me as being a bit fake looking - yellowing them a little would help as well as making them a bit sharper looking. I assume that with the darker bunny you've made him less reddish brown and more greyish brown, as in the first drawing. Other than that, I don't find anything to crit.

Tommy - what is this page illustrating? Is this the ending? I like Katherine's suggestion of the apricot - if you want to push the warm color thing even more - you could put a VERY light wash of canary yelow on the animals - not to change the color but to just give it a warmer feeling. It depends on what you are trying to say on this page.
I like the roundness of the claws - makes him feel nonthreatning, but I do agree about making them not so white - you really could use almost any color to do that.
I think they still look like the other bunnies - those long ears being the best identifier.

It's one of 4 pieces that will be on the page. Having been turned into a rabbit by a magic spell, Dewdrop (the bear now rabbit) fondly remembers the bear-things she used to do and misses them. All the activities were done with her two bunny friends.
I may give a go at the warming up the bear having added a light warm pink to the clouds. Claws will get a make-over. ;)

Now looking at this again, I think there's one little thing that I wish were different and that is the hard edges around the bottom of the picture (of the bear) the cloud is so wispy and soft and the bottom of the piece looks unfinished. (Which I guess would make sense since the bear isn't all there). The other picture also has soft edges everywhere so that sort of enforces how I feel about the bottom part of the bear.
But then, maybe it's the look you were going for and I'm also not equipt to give crit's, sometimes I'll see something a certain way and then after trying it I wish it was back to the way it was in the first place. I'd like it if you let me know if you keep it the way it is... why you prefer it that way?

I love the warm glow in the cloud! And that touch of colour brings the bear and the bunnies even closer together in feeling...
I always thought that such a stylized image would be all right in any way, but now I see that the addition of colour did a lot to improve it. The claws are less threatening now that they are receding more.
Further to Flame Lily's question... If there are going to be four pieces on one page, I believe different treatments would give more variety to it. The bear & bunnies vignette style and maybe another one of them, would give more movement to the page layout than if they were four rectangles/squares. Is that the rationale behind it? It is not really possible to evaluate them individually, since they also have to work together on the larger format. Am I close to it at all?

Hi Raquel. Yes, you are spot on except that they must be judged individually as well a group. There will be as you say, different shapes to each vignette. They'll "float" as they say. Holly Hobbie does this all the time. I agree about the color in the cloud. I had to alter the blue a bit too as color went in. The color doesn't show as pretty here but it's not bad. I have to be careful though because I'm no colorist like Katherine so I have to work within my abilities. Besides I love muted colors. :D

Good point Meisie. I won't. I'll just fiddle with the color of the claws. I want the red out. I'm really happy you think the bunnies are good. I do too. A friend of mine thought otherwise so I had to ask. I'm still undecided about the whiskers. Maybe 3 short ones. Dunno.

Well I'm impressed with your apricot cloud - it does look a lot better! I didn't think it would look that good.
Now claws - I've just watched a programme on the television which had bears in (sudden rapt attention from me!) and discovered that claws have a deeper colour at their base. I think I'd reduce the red right down (where did that come from?), maybe use the apricot or a beigey bone colour and work in a bit of the blue to give the shape and base colour. The combination of apricot and blue should have a neat darkening effect.

Now that Katherine mentions it, if they were darker at the base, lightening toward the tip, they would look more natural. I know you're not going for realistic, but natural in their own universe.
Maybe whiskers just on the bunnies?
These are sweet and comforting illustrations. I can see them in a much-loved book to be read every single night. Fingers crossed for that contract!

I've been getting some good advice Kathy. ;)

Tommy, just noticed that the folks all pestering you about your poor bunnies are all named some variation of C/Katherine. Look out, we're all probably redheads!
The beauty of WetCanvas! is that it enables you to push yourself further than you've ever gone before. Bobcat started a terrific thread asking folks to show how far they've come. I know WetCanvas! has helped me improve far beyond I ever could have dreamed.
Seeing other artists' work--such as yours--also inspires me to try new things and to believe that someday.....dreams will come true!

LOL Yeah I was thinking about that Kathy. Kath, Kath and Cath LOL. I feel like I'm already picking up stuff. One needs to be open to it. I'm liking it a lot.

I went through the whole thread again to find out what ground you have used... Is it illustration board? Or...?
I also have a very special question. I love the finish of your colour application. How do you work? Circular stroke? Light layers? Sharp point? Or...?
Thank you Tommy! :D

I use Strathmore 3 ply medium Raquel. It has a tooth unlike the plate finish which I find too smooth. I don't use circular strokes but rather back and forth motions. I'm kind of all over the place and I just fill in the holes as I go. I try to keep a sharp point.
Here's the final final. Not sure if I posted it.

It's beautiful! Your characters are so lovable... The claws are colourful now, and the warm glow is still there in the cloud to complete the loving atmosphere. Is this work for a children's book? I need a copy for my granddaughter! :)
You must have a very light touch to cover the ground so evenly. Thanks for all the info. I tried 3-ply Strathmore and found it very versatile, then I realized it was discoloured: old non-acid-free from my college days. Not good!

Raquel, the new Strathmore is acid free. :D Thanks for the lovely comments btw.

Tommy, don't think I saw the final-final. The cloud is gorgeous. And the claws! Much improved. Tell your prospective publisher you already have a bunch of advance sales through this site! :D

I figure I have a dozen sales so far. What publisher could resist that? ;)

But we have relatives as well! ;)
I've put my marketing hat on here. Look at it another way, what's your hit rate in percentage terms of the people who've looked at it. Now I know we always get more people looking than posting and we sometimes give people kudos compliments - but I really don't think that's the case here.
We're fans, but I think if your work was punted in a more neutral forum it might well draw the same response.
Why don't you you post it in Art Business and ask for suggestions on how to market it?
I've got one lady I'm in contact with (very successful) who is saying that the big thing at the moment is the illustration of children's books - and that's her agent talking - telling her what she should be getting into!
So no more Mrs Nice Guy! :p Get off that butt and do something with this!!!

Thanks Katherine. I'm all set to roll on this project. Just getting the reproduction printed to send off with manuscript. The acting editor of the children's wing of Penquin Books loves my work so I'm ok with the art. It's the story that may hold it up.
...and about that Mrs. nice Guy. Ahem...I said I liked women not that I am one. :p

Just caught up with this. The changes you made have given this such a wonderful dreamy feel, I wish I'd had a book with such wonderful pictures when my children were small.

And the "no more Mrs Nice Guy" comment was by way of prefacing me being a bit stroppy with you! Didn't have you down as a woman - honest! :D Really! :p

You might want to mention to the publishers that you topped 1000 viewings for this thread - that doesn't happen very often!
