View Full Version : Project Discussion: Piece by Piece in Pastel

02-28-2005, 10:16 PM
A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Piece by Piece in Pastel
Project Leader: khourianya
Relative Difficulty: Easy
Type Restrictions: Painting
Medium: Pastels
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: 30
Maximum participants allowed: 28

In the book "Drawing on the right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards, she describes a drawing technique called "squaring up". In this technique, you take a square of a picture and capture every detail within that square. Though it may not look like much of anything, if you do this to an entire picture (capturing it all square by square), you will have all of the detail of the complete image.

In this Project, inspired by a thread in Pastel Talk, we will split a well known painting into 28 pieces. Each person will be given a piece of the painting and asked to complete it within the next month. As the pieces are submitted, both participants in this project and others in the forum are encouraged to try to guess what the actual painting is of. If we have more than 28 people sign up in a month, another painting will be started. If you finish your piece early and would like another piece, PM me and I will assign another to you.

I will number all of the pieces, but it will be randomized so as to not make it too easy to guess. Please submit your finished piece in the "Final Images" section and use the assigned piece number as the title for the piece. If you wish, you can submit progress images as you are working on the piece, but it is up to your personal preference and is not required.

Once all of the pieces are submitted, I will "stitch" them together in Photoshop to reveal the finished painting to us all...as well as the famous artist and painting that was used as inspiration.

This project will last for exactly one month and is open to both soft and oil pastels. The paintings should be completed in a square format only (you can choose whichever size you want - just make sure it is square) and I will PM the individual pieces to each participant as they sign up.

I would like to send a BIG thank you out to Binkie, whose thread inspired this project! If the response to this project is really good, there is a chance we could make it into a monthly project for us! So let's have a bit of fun...and get down to painting.

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/index.php?cmd=view_details&proj_id=837)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Well, how exciting is this? I have already assigned 11 of the 28 pieces! In case you all were wondering, I took the piece with the signature for myself so as to keep the challenge up! Here's to us all having a great time putting together this puzzle! :D

I got mine! Very interesting colors -

03-01-2005, 04:04 PM
Mine's going to be....painterly! :D
Too fun!

Thanks Cori,
Got mine! This sounds like fun!!!

03-01-2005, 05:15 PM
thanks, i got the piece. this is a very fun idea, hope we do it monthly! now i just have to choose, op's or sp's, hmmm...

Okay--I'm in! Can't wait to see my piece... :D

03-01-2005, 08:44 PM
There you go, Deborah. I just PM'd it (and it's an interesting one...:D)

Okay - I have 5 more square pieces to go and 6 smaller rectangular pieces (the painting is an odd size so the last pieces are half squares in the grid...) . I am so excited to see the enthusiasm for this project so far. This promises to be a fun month!

03-01-2005, 09:55 PM
Yes, this will be fun. Happily, I knew what it was and by whom as soon as I got my piece, but I won't blab....promise! I noticed my piece had a thin white bar along the left which kept it from being square...I lopped that off...hope that's okay? If you WANT 'em to have the bar(s), let us know so we can include them.

Also, I'm assuming we're supposed to COPY these rather than interpret them? Interpreting might be fun, but a whole other puzzle, I suppose.

03-01-2005, 10:28 PM
Yes, please do ignore the thin white bars along any edges. that is just over cropping on my part. and double yes to the copying the piece. we want the piece to look somewhat close to the original. (and darn, you guessed already Sooz...and i thought I had made the pieces small enough to be a bit tricky...oh well, hopefully it will still be a challenge to some of the participants)

03-01-2005, 11:08 PM

Not to worry...it's just that I lucked out and got a piece I recognized immediately...if I'd gotten any other part, I probably woulda gone crazy trying to figure it out! I'd seen this one in person, BTW, years ago in Denver on a collection tour. Awesome to see genuine articles whenever you can. That's where I fell in love with Singer Sargent too.

03-01-2005, 11:33 PM
I'm game!
I saw a project like this at school a few years back--as it was displayed "live", the pieces were all the same size, but there was plenty of interpretation by the various artists, and the end result was fun--sort of like a patchwork quilt.

This is going to be fun, can't wait to get my piece. what a wonderful idea, thanks

Well, I'm in...what an interesting experiment! Should be really intriguing considering all the different painting styles! Thanks Cori!

03-02-2005, 03:23 PM
I'll send out your piece when I get home from work tonight, Mikki. Same goes for anyone else who signs up today...

Piper Ballou
03-02-2005, 11:52 PM
I received my piece, but in the pm the picture is really small. I did copy and pasted it to a paint program but when I made it largerbut it is blurry....anyone else have this problem?
I can still see enough of it to paint, but it will drive me crazy.

03-03-2005, 12:04 AM
The sizes of the pieces has been questioned to me many times. I searched until I could find the largest size digital image possible. When I split it into pieces, I did so in such a way that would allow for the colour information to be carried forward without pixelating the image. The small size of the image is part of the challenge here. :)

03-03-2005, 12:19 AM
Thanks Cori-I will do my best, okay, I am really laughing but only because I think this is going to be fun...I can't wait to see how it is going to all turn out.

03-03-2005, 04:26 AM
Got my piece but can't make out any detail - can make out colours so I have no idea what it's meant to be!

03-03-2005, 02:43 PM
How is all this going to come together? Are you going to cut and paste it Cori? Do we need to be uniform in image size? I have to admit this little stamp you sent has me just dying to see what it's a piece of!

03-03-2005, 03:09 PM
It's so tiny!!!

03-03-2005, 05:41 PM
I will resize them all so it doesn't matter the size you submit to the project (preferably not smaller than the file I sent each of you, though - or else we will have a teeny tiny painting to display :D). I will them put them all together in photoshop and do the big reveal to the group both in this thread AND in the Final Images of the project.

This is great, Wendy! You nailed it! Great job!

03-03-2005, 10:26 PM
Am I too late? I am finally getting back on my feet again after this flu bug going around here and saw this project. Sounds like a lot of fun and I have recently become addicted to my OPs.

Hope I can join in! :wink2:

That was fun! There may be some detail left out because the file was so small, but I painted what I saw- or at least I think I did! :D

03-04-2005, 08:00 AM
And here is where we are at...

I will upload an update as we go to give people a chance to guess....

Cheena K
03-04-2005, 08:05 AM
It's a great project, and I am waiting for my piece...haven't painted in several months now...haven't touched my pastels since my dad passed away...i hope I will be able to work on this one...

03-04-2005, 10:56 AM
Hi Cheena! I'm glad to see you back again! :) I'll send you your piece when I get home from work today.

03-04-2005, 01:57 PM
Cheena! how nice to see you again!!! This project seems so accessible, I'm using it as part of my "back to pastels", too--but pull out your magnifying glass-those pieces are tiny!

I should get a little time to work this weekend, tho I may not get it uploaded until Mon.

03-04-2005, 02:38 PM
Welcome back, Cheena  Hope this gets you back into painting and we see more from you after this one.

03-04-2005, 10:58 PM
Well - we only have one piece left!!! I must say that I am so thrilled with how fast this one filled up. Now we can all get down to painting and get that painting revealed! :D

Thanks, John...I'll hold off on adding it to the puzzle for now! :)

Piper Ballou
03-05-2005, 01:26 PM
I finished my piece and uploaded it to the project page. Do I need to do anything else?
I had no idea what I was painting, but now will look at the ones that are finished....
this was a fun project.

And now for an update!

03-05-2005, 04:15 PM
here's my piece, no 28. i know who the artist is and the name of the piece, but don't want to spoil the fun.

i used op's on art spectrum.

did i put this in the wrong place?

did i put this in the wrong place?

Yes and no - you can upload it into the final images too so it stays with the actual project.

This looks really good....I'll add it to the puzzle...

Deborah Secor
03-05-2005, 11:04 PM
My piece is finished but it's been raining so much (in our formerly arid state) that the phone lines have an echo, and right now I'm on with a whopping 19.2 kbps, making staying on line long enough to upload a photo difficult! I'll keep trying...

I think I know this painting.... :D

I hope this will be a project that we can have repeated. Seems like everyone has had a great time with it!

Please let me know if you need another photo of this - the first pictures I took were too light, the next set was too dark and now this group is too red. Normally I don't care if my photo is off, but when I'm trying to get it exactly right... :( I can see that I need to get out my camera manual and read the directions!

This was the piece right next to mine and lemme tellya, your colours are much closer to the actual painting than mine are (and I HAVE the actual painting to cheat from :D) I think this photo is just fine!

No need to pull your hair out to make it exact since all of our monitors likely differ anyway!

Why the sad face? This is lovely, Dawn!

And now for another update!

03-13-2005, 08:28 PM

It has been a fun project to host too...I am looking forward to making it monthly! :D It really is amazing how a group of 28 different artists can make the painting look so close to the original.

Any guesses yet?

My guess - Cabaret by Degas

Deborah Secor
03-14-2005, 07:25 PM
I'll second that guess! I've had a lot of fun watching it come together, comparing to a copy I pulled off the net. Thanks, Cori!!

03-17-2005, 10:46 PM
Cori: Just wanted to say thank you for all the hard work you have put in on this project. As it is almost completed, might forget to say thanks. This is really turning into a neat painting. After I submitted my piece of the puzzle, my daughter helped me determine the original work and the artist. What a great way to spend some time and get to paint something so great.
Congratulations to all who participated in this. There is some great work showing here.

03-17-2005, 11:30 PM
It has been A LOT of fun to work as leader of this project. Everytime I add another piece in to the work in progress it really makes me take a step back and truly appreciate the very talented artists that participate in the pastels forum here at WC!

Now to think about next month...I have a couple of ideas...we could do another limited project like this, or do a project open to as many people as possible and work square by square randomly through an entire painting...(does that make sense? I mean a painting would be selected and I would reveal a random square each day for a month)

What do you guys think? It would be a good way to make sure everyone could participate who wanted to...

Natalie NZ
03-18-2005, 04:00 AM
Thanks Cori for a fun project. I am looking forward to the next one.

03-19-2005, 12:08 PM
What do you guys think? It would be a good way to make sure everyone could participate who wanted to...

I think it worked really well the way you did it. You could ask former participants to wait a couple of days to give new participants a chance before signing up....

CM Neidhofer
03-19-2005, 12:24 PM
I like the project just the way it is. I'm sure not all the same people have time, every month, to participate, so there would always be room for someone who hasn't participated. And as suggested, those who did participate can wait a few days to let others sign up and then pick up the slack from there. Again, thanks for a great project, Cori.

03-19-2005, 02:03 PM
Yes, I also think the project is fine just the way it is. It was a good exercise in being very careful about what I painted ... felt bizarre to paint something not knowing what on earth it was (my piece wasn't giving ANYTHING away) and unexpectedly nerve-wracking, thinking how carefully I had to transcribe it so that it would fit in with the adjoining pieces! Seeing the squares all together is great fun. Thanks, Cori!

03-19-2005, 05:23 PM
I'll have to agree. I like it the way that it is, but have no problem with waiting a couple of days to let others participate, before jumping in. I would think that if you announce a two day period for those who were unable to participate on the first to sign up, then opened the signup to all should not create any problems. Again thanks for the fine job you are doing.

Well - I just submitted the outline for next month to Kat. It will be the same, except that everyone who signed up tis month will have to wait 5 days before signing up again (meaning, if there are still spots on April 5th, you can then sign up for a second consecutive month).

I am really sorry, haven't really been able to do my bit...I have it taped on to my easel but don't get any time...just shifted to a new office, and facing a lot of work overload...please pray for me...hope I get to work on my piece this saturday...sorry...I am late :(

Hi Cheena, Thanks for making me feel better! I am just starting to get somewhere on my square. I plan to try and finish it this weekend too. So, you know how the old story goes right? The hare doesn't always win the race! Sometimes us turtles come in just fine at the end! ;)

03-25-2005, 12:45 AM
All that matters is that it is in by the end of the month. :) Those of you, who haven't had time to do theirs yet, still have a week (and a super long weekend, I might add) to finish up and submit! Then we will be done! I won't start getting nervous until Tuesday :p (Technically, I believe this project closes Wednesday night, but i could be wrong).

Here's my piece! Finally...

Though, now as I am comparing it with the original, a lot seems out of place :( but I managed to do something...I had completely given up painting...and now, I am back!!

Cheena, not to worry. My piece seemed way off also but when added to the rest it didn't look too bad. All these pieces are very hard to draw when you do not have the whole picture. Teaches you to really look at shapes and colors and not at what the object is that you are drawing.

Ok, cheena beat me to it. See Cheena, you are fast compared to me! :cat: Here is Square 27 progress pic, possibly final.

Oh well. I posted my square also. I can't seem to get the pic too come out right. I have tried different settings on my camera, but it either comes out to orange or too green. Not sure what to do about it. Tried a pic outside too and that didn't even work. It actually looks closer to the square than it does in my pic, but I guess you all will have to take my word on that. Stupid camera. I must have done something to piss it off, cause it used to do pretty well. Tried adjusting in my photo tool, but it changes too much in the wrong direction every time.

This may just have to be the final, unless someone has some great ideas on how to make the photo work better. Actually, I think I have tried about everything, except setting up a special white room for the photography part.

This looks great! Keep in mind that even if the colours don't look quite right on your monitor, it might look perfect on someone elses. none of our monitors will have exactly the same colours represented - they will always be slightly off.

Cheena - yours looks really great as well! you shuld submit it as a final image in the actual project so it will be there for everyone to see and comment on (with a thumbnail)

Both are a perfect fit for this painting! Thanks for participating.

I hope now the pieces will make some more sense to you...seeing them as a part of the big picture. :D

Three more pieces and we are done. Time is running out very quickly! I will PM those who are left. Hopefully we can end up with a completed painting in the next day or so.

Uhm..... *blush*....anybody here? Sorry for being sooo late, but I finally finished my piece of the puzzle. Just a tiny bit "timechallenged", story of my life it seems....

Don't know what I've painted - what an odd feeling! - but did my best!

Well this wraps the March 2005 Piece by Piece project. The April project should be set up late tomorrow night, for those of you who are looking to join next month. remember that if you signed up this month, you need to wait until April 5th before you can sign up for April's project. The pieces are ready to go and a new puzzle awaits! I hope to see everyone there (btw - there are 35 spots for April so we can have a few more people join in)

And now for the side-by-side finale on the March project...
