How long before an acrylic painting fades using quality acrylics? What does varnishing protect from apart from dust?

Like any good piece of art, acrylics shouldn't fade if kept out of direct sunlight.

Hi Margaret, sorry the first part is a 'how long is a piece of string' kind of question :) depends on the colours, the lighting and other factors. Generally speaking most acrylic paints intended for artists are highly reliable in this respect today so there is little to worry about under normal conditions. Was there a specific colour or colours you were worried or curious about? Any particular lighting?

Varnishing primarily protects the paint surface from dust and other airborne particles/contaminants, as well as surface abrasion and if it includes a UV inhibitor it can help protect against fading.

Thanks Carol and Einion.
I just wanted to know in case any customer asked, not that I've sold any yet...or found an exhibition. I'm going to frame the ones I've done and keep them as I like them myself. :)
