GENERAL INFORMATION:
Title: North light
Year Created: 2005
Medium: Oil
Surface: Canvas
Dimension: 20x16
Allow digital alterations?: Yes!

MY COMMENTS:
Started this to paint by natural light. Somehow I did the setup as if to show motion though space...so off to a bad start! Then the setup only included the vase, the grapes and the leaf on table...way too empty! Another problem so I added the chair...still not right...then the flower on the table...still not right...then the wallpaper stripes...and this is the result. Moral: Do not lose your concept!!!

MY QUESTIONS FOR THE GROUP:
Anything?

the table looks concave as well as off balance but the rest is easily lived with.

I've had similar problems with an unclear concept, Susan.

In this case, some creative cropping might serve you well.
Take care :) -S

Susan, there is so much of merit here. But the table top needs to be leveled and there's something a bit off with the bowl. I think I would get rid of the single leaf and highlight the grapes.
I 'saw' those stripes as vertical blinds :p maybe they could become that and allow for some interesting light and shadow stripes?

I think Scott is right
I think cropping the chair out, then taking the rest of the leaf out
would create a beautiful piece

(table looks fine to me...wayne? :wink2: )

beautiful colors!!!!!!
sooo pretty to look at!

Too late to change it now, but I think that if the vase was off-center to the left then you wouldn't have needed the chair and the stripes.

I agree with wayne that the table is a bit crooked.

Maybe instead of the stripes add another flower going vertically and slightly left?

So many good suggestions.
For me .... I'd soften the stripes on the wall paper and do something with the great empty part between the right top flower and the grapes.
Nice romantic somewhat nostalgic painting.

Reading your problems I recognized them "subito" :D

I really like the soft feeling of the grapes, the cloudy transparent look and their color.

Thank you all for the great suggestions and comments.

No one mentioned if I captured the north light.

Wayne, that table is
Scott, :) I'm thinking more of a paintover for this one.
Syderbabe, merit?...very little...imo.
Giniaad, nice to hear from you...colors different for me...too sweet, if you know what I mean. Reminds me of pepto bismol.
caroline, no sale here...this one is not going anywhere.
rafi, never too late to make changes...but I'm done with this. Did think about an extra flower but thought it too ordinary.
gilberte, glad to know others have struggled with the same issues.
tracysart, glad you think so.
Dornberg, appreciate you words.
