View Full Version : Self Portrait - New Series
01-28-2005, 05:58 PM
Well here's a start - these are the reference photos that I will be using for a series of smaller portraits approximately 45cm x 60cm each panel- don't know how many yet I'll see which ones work.
Will be using oils and perhaps a palette knife. As for colour - don't know yet - they work for me at the moment in black and white - would like to emphasise the many different processes involved in the making of a self portrait. Any suggestions welcome at this stage.
lookin at an awful lotta hand studies here!!!!!
01-29-2005, 06:46 AM
Well here's the first three of nine panels - have used graphite, charcoal, pastel, mars black, transparent black,(oils) a bit of lean medium, palette knife, tea towel and fixative. Getting the other six panels tomorrow - thinking of hanging it around a corner i..e 4 panels then 5 panels - to make the process more confined ( one of the prerequisites for the Archibald is to include hanging instructions - with photo of hung work as well) These would all be placed close together in one horozontal line on the wall and passing around the corner - it's the only way I can hang them here as I haven't the space to hang them all on one wall. Total size will be 90cm x 450cm or 18" high x 160 " long.
I'm sticking to black and white though did throw a bit of cadmium yellow on the first panel....just couldn't help m'self!!!
:D :D :D :p :D :D :D

Another one and one not sure of????
02-01-2005, 01:09 AM
Ahhh managed to crawl out of the black hole I had dug myself and got to work!!! :crying:  I'm finding it hard not to panic  only 2 weeks and this morning thought    I'm happy with todays work - introduced some pastels along with the mars transparent black and zinc white as well as assorted brushes - ends of brushes and anything else that was laying around - lucky the next door neighbours cat wasn't around as I probably would have used his tail or fur or something :cat: Thinking of keeping the first panels messy and unfinished and developing them more from now on (4 to go) and thennnnnn..... putting them all ouside and splashing a big bucket of red oils over the lot mmmmm..... may change my mind on that one - hope this one isn't going to be a monster!!!!oh well I can always put the red solo portrait in :( :D
may collage the background on this last panel???
02-01-2005, 02:20 AM
Hey Kim  This is a really awesome idea. When you go girl, you go. I like this idea. I really like the ones with the different hand poses, has a rythm to to. :music: Actually, they all match very well.
I like the black and white idea too.
Tell me you are kidding about splashing red paint all over the hard work..
Will the High Brow be incuded in this gang of portraits? Or is that a separate one. If it is tied with these, I can see you adding some bits of red here and there.
I am Watching this WIP with much enthusiasm. Super
02-01-2005, 11:27 PM
Thanks Lisa for dropping by!!
Well you will probably think I'm as mad as a two bob watch but I just taken 4 of the panels to join High Brow in the dungeon because they were getting on my nerves - poor Dave had to go and order another 4 panels  - getting them tomorrow. No red on this series - scrapped that idea too - just a wee touch in the middle panel (head shot) with some newpaper collage and writing. Hopefully this is the right road I'm on now!! I will redo the poses that I scrapped but in a style that I feel more comfortable with. I hope I'm not confusing you too much......... here are the "new" started panels with the numbered order that they should be in the end - will be sticking to black , white and greys.
Panels # 1 & 3
Panel # 6 & 9
Panel# 5 this will have collage and some red in the background....I think  :D
02-02-2005, 12:09 AM
I'm sorry, I realize that I'm extremely new in this forum (1st post in this section of WC) but I LOVE all of these self-portraits, you have a great style, it's just the panel #5 the irises don't seem to be lined up, and they're so perfectly in line in the other panels it just looks very off to me. They are actually like that in your reference, but if it were me I'd steer away from the ref for that part.
Either way, these panels look amazing, and you can throw my comment out the window if you don't agree. Great Job :D
02-02-2005, 12:36 AM
Hi Ryan thanks for the the comments ...I was hoping no-one would notice THAT eye - it gets pretty quiet in this thread and if it wasn't for me good mates Lisa :cat: and Gilberte  dropping in on me I'd PROBABLY GO MADDDD!!! Anyway checked out your web site - good charcoal sketch - nice and loose :D Lucky you to have a step mum who wears her p js alll day! Love your quotes - just happens to be two of my favourites.
02-02-2005, 03:06 AM
I think people aren't used to this new WIP thread yet. I sometimes forget to check in on it. Maybe because it isn't on the OCF's first opening page ?
You have great and confident drawing skills and a PERFECT model with a lot of personality.
Keep going and remind us of your progress !
02-02-2005, 03:14 AM
OH KIM!!!!!!!!!!! High brow is in the dungeon. What???? I am totally confused. I thought she was in the show? WHy? Well, I am sure you know best. So whats in the show now? These are the new panels. I like very much. Style is showing. Will be a really great interesting series. The smoking one is really cool and the headband, something about it. very artsy...The back of the head is very interesting.
Black white and greys..sounds super. newspapwer collage, Very cool indeed.
Stick to your comfortable style for this. I agree.
I want that WIN ;)
I am excited to see more, more more.
02-02-2005, 03:49 AM
Thanks for calling in Gilberte and Lisa
Gilberte...................... :D :o your too ....tooooo....... kind :o
Lisa.............I'm a bit confused myself. High Brow was going to be my original entry for the Archibald but I was never really happy with that neck so am going to enter this series of 9 panels - and your right I'll stick to this style as I'm not really a messy painter (I suppose it goes with the neat and tidy obsessive compulsive side of me)
Won't be painting tomorrow as I have to go and watch Alexander and Charlotte at their swimming carnival
02-03-2005, 04:06 PM
Thanks very mcuh for the compliments on the sketch :) it's actually a few different mediums.
I wanna see more of these panels though :D
02-03-2005, 09:18 PM
Hi guys.....Lisa, Gilberte and Ryan,
The swimming carnival was great ....3 firsts, four seconds and one fourth (false start) between the two of them ....Alexander's age champion again! Charlotte just missed out :crying:
Ahh well been flat out painting....lots of black!!!!!!!!!!!!!! brought the messy paintings back as I don't think I've got time to redo them Lisa ..... hope one of the judges likes messy work...lol
Thinking about hanging them in rows of three like this:
panel 1 panel 2 panel 3
panel 4 panel 5 panel 6
panel 7 panel 8 panel 9
from ceiling to floor ....that puts the collage panel in the middle row in the middle
here's where I'm up to..........
panel 1 and close up ( another eye to fix!!!!!!! eh Ryan??)
panel 3 and close up
panel 5 (collage) and wide shot panel 9
panel 6 and close up
close up panel 9
Changed to lamp black and fat medium for black blocks as time is of the essence think I might go and have a couple of wines....(glasses that is) :D :D :D :wink2:
going on with more black and facial details tonight and tomorrow. Hopefully I'll get stuck into the collage panel on Monday!!!!  :cat:
02-03-2005, 10:47 PM
These panels look great  , my fav is 6, its a great pose too. I'm anxious to see this collage one, how exactly are you gonna do that anyway??
02-04-2005, 11:06 AM
Kim - just saw this thread and wow - its terrific. the progression makes a statement. B&W with maybe one primary is working.
Personal fav is the one with the ciggie and head scarf. Very 1950's ....
02-04-2005, 11:38 AM
KIM...HOLY KOALA! THIS TOTALLY ROCKS....I am so impressed..Almost falling off my chair...They are looking amazing..I like the line up too...Very good choice. The close ups are looking super..
I did not see panel 2, and 4. I guess those are the ones from before you refer to as messy...And 5 is from the messy batch..LOL...Come on Kim they are not messy. You can fix that.
I totally love 6,(super work on the face there in number 6), 7,9 and 3...Well all of them. Number 9 finishes with a bang, the back of the head and hair style is so catching! I am having wine now looking at this amazing project. I cant wait to see it all finished. Very Curious about the collage...Is that a bigger canvas then the others. Or will be kind of centered in the middle. of the other panels.?
You deserve a good glass of wine Kim tonight.
This is all so exciting... :D
Oh and congrats to Alexander...
02-04-2005, 01:26 PM
I do love the development of these selfportraits and enjoy the follow-up. Panel 6 is my favorite but 9 is very special and the one with the cigarette is smashing. You see ....... I like them all !
Congrats to the swimmers !
02-05-2005, 04:52 AM
Hi Kim, I was wondering if you can tell me what type of pencil or charcoal you use to draw on your canvases (are they also primed with gesso). They look so neat and good
I use charcoal and tend to make lots of mistakes with my drawing, so it is quite messy when i wipe off.. .I also tried a soft hb pencil and I erase.. .and it is oh so crappy...
Would really appreciate your advice of what you do and what you use. thanks
02-05-2005, 06:45 AM
Thanks Guys.... for dropping in....
...HOLY KOALA! THIS TOTALLY ROCKS
Lisa....LOL what a great expression!!!! very aussie!!!! :D :D :D
I've drawn these up with black permanent marker (medium) - pen does bleed a little but I don't mind because I blend it into the oils - I can't help it but I do like those lines - think I'm a drawer at heart :D :D :D I normally use HB pencil and spray with fixative afterwards but I thought I'd experiment with these - I've decided to put the collage in panel # 5 as a background - it will be in the middle row of three in the middle - gosh I'm confusing myself here - :D
Gilberte.....thanks so much for the compliments :o :D - worked on 6 and 4 today (panel#4 was panel #3 yesterday!!! )
Spyder Babe - thanks - that pose is a strong one - it makes it a lot easier when the pose is good and yes I agree very 1950's!!! :D
Ryan...Ahhh yes the collage - gonna be black and white photo copies on cartridge paper - copies of assorted newspaper clippings, letters ,writing and other bits and pieces related to my cv - also I.m thinking of a speech/thought bubble on top with maybe a question mark in red mmmm this is all in my head so I'll wait and see if that happens!!
Any way this is where I'm up to (didn't do a lot today as we had visitors) so getting a little nervous ha ha - taking longer than I thought ---if I could only click my fingers mmmmm - dreaming
02-05-2005, 10:38 PM
Wow, these just keep getting better. I really like how well you've painted the faces on these last two panels :)
Also, I have a technical question:
I paint with acrylics, and I see that you paint with oils, and so do a lot of people whose paintings I really like. Have you tried acrylics? And which one do you prefer, especially for portraiture, because that's essentially all I paint.
02-06-2005, 01:59 AM
Thanks Ryan....been doing a lotta upside down....sideways painting today...it'a a wonder I'm walking a straight line :D :D :D
to answer your tech question....I love acrylics....but I think I got the bug for oils when I was at art school....maybe......cause I came first in portrait painting (oils) whereas I failed abstract 2 years in a row with acrylics :crying: :crying: ........maybe acrylics just don't like me....still keep em in the cupboard though......have done a lotta paintings with acrylic underneath and then painted over them with oils - think it has something to do with the body in the oil paint.....but hey I'm no expert on this stuff....I learn something New EVERY DAY!!! I have been known to paint with house paint too.... and that commission got me $5,000.00 (won't be doin another 1 of those for a looong time tho!!!)
Here's the middle row ...nearly finished with collage to goooo!!! (on the middle panel)
02-06-2005, 02:29 AM
Hi Kim. Way to go. Looks just super! Great idea to have to the head band photos together. (They are so smashing). The lights and shadows in the face are so well done and I am really drawn it. I think the hallo dark shadows in the back add a dazzling power inpact. Before I read you post I thought the one in the middle looked a little lost as the portrait is so low on the bottom of the canvas, and then I thought, Oh this will be the one with the collage, that will really rock. And then I read your post and was like Yep, WOW...shes got it!
You have been working loads my dear.
02-06-2005, 04:24 AM
Hi Lisa.... :cat: thanks for dropping by.....can't believe nearly all of sunday gone and one week before I go back to work - hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to hang them all together because I'm a little nervous about the order and composition of the whole as one work
Hope you had a good weekend!!!
02-06-2005, 07:47 AM
Im not much of a poster but I wanted to tell you how fantastic I think your work is. This series just grabbed me. I love the enrgy, size, color and compositions. Just great.
02-06-2005, 02:04 PM
These are absolutely wonderful....I've enjoyed reading about all of the ways you consider going with them....All ideas with merit...Thanks for sharing :D ...looking forward to the finale!
02-06-2005, 10:29 PM
Welcome and thanks for calling in   Nice to meet you :)
Hi there MaryAnne ......thanks so much for your kind comments :D :D :D
Hi there Lauren.....I'm glad you like them....at this stage I've got a few options.
Here's the latest stage....have just stuck the collage on with a small bit masking tape.....don't know about the background ........red or black??? and I think I'll have to paint the question mark!!

02-06-2005, 11:47 PM
Hi Kim! I have just browsed this thread you have here, and I wanted to say that I love this idea and the works you're currently working on. You have captured yourself so well. The panels look so much like the reference photos! I wish I had the guts to try one self-portrait--and here you are attempting-and accomplishing- 9 of them! WOW!! Wonderful work, and #6 is my favorite!! I'd think that working with so much black that I personally would get depressed, but then this work is so magnificant. You must be feeling great about it! I can't wait to see the finished result! Good luck!! :D
02-07-2005, 04:44 AM
Hi Kim, The collage and placement is looking very good. I agree, that you should paint the question mark or type a nice big black one and print it and stick it on...just an idea?
Busy busy bee you will be this week. Anxious to see more development.
02-07-2005, 05:45 AM
Hi Alishia...thanks for dropping by and nice to meet ya. :D ...getting a bit nervous about the whole project at this stage and.... wondering whether I will get it finished!
Hi Lisa ...thanks for your suggestion about the ? ...will probably stick to red as I'm going with black background but I do think the ? needs more structure and a more finished look .....good suggestion printing it up ...Lisa....you clever girl  as you well know I'm pushing for time now!!! ....had to drop a panel as Dave has just hung them all and one just haaad to go  -anyway here's a few shots ..lotta work now to tie them altogether and work on unifying the work as a whole piece+quite a few panels still to be finished...backgrounds and tidying up etc especially in the top row and  that top right corner looks so dark ......phewww as you can see I'm having a happy hour!! :D :D
ps Charlotte took this one for fun!! :D
02-07-2005, 12:27 PM
Hey KIM...WOW, Looks so smashing to see them all hanging up!!!...Dont you think??...really gives you a good idea of what is going on...and for you to see what is needed. The placement is super, a nice following for the eye. Enjoy that Happy hour!
BTW, dig your white-t and jeans, and the headband...You rock girl! very sexy artist at work.. :D
02-07-2005, 12:51 PM
Kim, what are those vitamins you take to produce such a body of portraits in so short a time ............... :cat:
Whatever ........... everytime I lookt at them I'm amazed !
02-07-2005, 05:21 PM
Hey Ladies!! :D :D
Thanks for the comps Lisa.....I'm... :o :o (I think these panels may change in order.....just about to print up that red ?
Gilberte....don't take any vitamins but I kill for my freeesh orange juice every morning (that Dave makes)..........then there's the couple chardonnays that I have most afternoons ha ha
ps doin a lot of pasting and painting today ....gonna be a hot one (30o) so will have the air con on!! :music: :music:
02-07-2005, 09:52 PM
I think I like the 8 panels more than I would've liked the 9. Then again I change my mind every 5 minutes, I'm a big walking contradiction. Anywho, I think if you switchd the 2 middle ones in the top row it'd look more fluid. Like the hands go from up praying, to folded praying, to turned, to down. Just a thought, I still love these anyway. Great job
02-08-2005, 03:32 AM
Join the club Ryan - I'm a walking contradiction right now and......
......this painting is a CONTRADICTION!!!!..... Replaced one of the panels already as it was looking staid....feel free to keep on commenting as sometimes I feel as if I'm not looking at the big picture....ha ha...this is what happens when one steps outside the square.....insane!!!!.....I think this is where the fun starts.....still working on them individually....so it's like I've changed the order 3 times today....still have't glued the collage down ...it will have a black background and still have a lotta work on the 1st 2 panels top and bottom....I'm guessing this is gonna keep changing til I've got all the details done....phewww..... anyway my framer's ordering the frame......white distressed french provincial timber and really wide and he's got the enviable job of putting all of the 8 panels onto one backing board plus framing......we're gonna have to hire a truck for this one as it's gonna weigh a ton.....it's about 5" x 5' without the frame  :eek
02-08-2005, 03:41 AM
Oh Kim, thats a great idea to have them all framed together...I wasnt sure what you were going to do.
I like this order...I like the collage one at the end.
But I know somehow things are going to change...LOL :D
02-08-2005, 03:57 AM
LOL Lisa!!! :D :D :D ....you and me both.....my mum feels the same as .....she still has a soft spot for high brow and wants me to put to put a small b&w copy in my collage on this one.....mmmmmmmm :D  :D
Cheers Kim
02-08-2005, 04:14 AM
Hi Kim, Oh Yes I agree mum....Thats a super idea...Smart Lady... :D for sure...
On another note...my butt is really in slow gear this morning...Cant even seem to start on my basel painting....It is going again in a direction like my nyhavn one..My husband says, that I am not sticking to the style we discussed...LOL..When I do little water colours and gouache on paper, then I am really whimsical, they just pour out...And I enjoy them...But then on the canvas...and i get too much into perspective...Blahh blahh.
02-08-2005, 04:25 AM
Lucky. lucky you Lisa......I.d like to feel more whimsical about this one....maybe I should try some gouache on these ...LOL :D :D
I'm sure your basel painting's going to be super!!!
02-08-2005, 05:55 AM
cool work here 'lake'.......nice idea to create a panel of several head shots.....
keep it up....and good luck
02-08-2005, 08:31 AM
Just loving where this is going....Framed? wow!
"my mum feels the same as .....she still has a soft spot for high brow and wants me to put to put a small b&w copy in my collage on this one."
I'm too curious....what does this mean? :D
02-08-2005, 10:20 AM
What about an additional one ....... the pose of you in front of those panels looks inviting :D  :D
02-08-2005, 06:34 PM
Hi guys.. Thanks for calling in and your comments are always welcome!! :D :D
Thanks heaps krispee!!
Lauren....to answer your question....high brow was a self portrait that I did last month for the Archibald but wasn't happy with it....something about the neck...here is a black and white version of it (which may go on the collage)
Hi Gilberte....  .....he he LOL.......are you trying to give me a nervous breakdown???
02-09-2005, 03:54 AM
Well been super busy today with collage and lots of black paint....still a long way to go.....first 2 panels top and bottom need finishing and lots of tidying up everywhere   Do ya think the black is tying it all together?????
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/09-Feb-2005/54304-wed_9_panel.JPG http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/09-Feb-2005/54304-wed_9_q_crop.JPG http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/09-Feb-2005/54304-wed_9_crop_rr.JPG http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/09-Feb-2005/54304-wed_crop_9_mattara.JPG http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/09-Feb-2005/54304-wed_crop_9_fg.JPG http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/09-Feb-2005/54304-wed_9_crop_p_di.JPG
02-09-2005, 05:43 AM
Hi Kim, I thought wow, super, then I went back and looked at the other post where you are sitting in front of the entire panel, and I do like the sections of grey in there.. :) .I dont know about all black...Looks kind of dark on my monitor. ..
Anyhow, you know what it looks like in real life...
The all black looks good on the back of head canvas and with the white headbands...Can you post some close ups so I can get a better feel.
The collage is super duper!
02-09-2005, 06:34 AM
Ahhhhh....thank for the explaination :D ....wonderful painting!...
Collage is wonderful....I also am not sure about the all black b/g either....but I am sure your vision will be great when complete.....
Throwing out one idea...which you, in turn, can throw out :D ...what about subtley extending some of the shapes from one panel into the adjacent one...or the panel below...Not necessarily the same value...Example...I love the shape created between panels 2 and 3...the 2 arms combined...but there is a line between the top and bottom rows that could be blurred with background shapes continued from row 1 down into row 2....Am I making sense...and is this idea too contrived? Just brain storming about trying to tie the panels together....
02-09-2005, 05:07 PM
Getting very tricky now and yes the black background has changed things considerably...........just playing around with some ideas....had them up on the wall last nlght like this...thinking less is more
then I put the back of the head on the left end
Dave has gone to get some paynes grey because I think the black is tooo black ....just not happy with the messy panels and am tinking go with these 4....what do you think??? :D  :D
02-09-2005, 05:27 PM
Since you asked :D
I love those 4 together...position? I like back of head on left side
02-10-2005, 12:39 AM
And then there were four....
Thanks Lauren I'm happy with this ....have spent the day working on individual panels ....will hopefully finish the back of the head tomorrow!!!
Liking the paynes grey :D :D
02-10-2005, 02:06 AM
Oh! Very Nice
I just love all the shadow effects :D
02-10-2005, 02:24 AM
Hi Kim, you have been busy, I really do love all the shadow effect going one..they are just smashing..and add so much style and depth to the paitnings...Super duper work! Like that touch of red nail polish, very stylish. The eyes in the headband one are excellent. Love the look..
I also do like the new idea of four, btw, your other 6 panels were great too..I did not think they were messy at all.
Well this combo, works super. I like the head one at the left too...Finishing with the collage one, you know the ending piece with bit and pieces about you, the artisit. Very good idea.
I have never tried paynes grey..looks super. I presume it is much better then mixing your own grey?
02-10-2005, 02:42 AM
Thanks for dropping by Tamera and  Glad you like it... :D :D
Yep...Lisa ...think I would have had a nervous breakdown trying to achieve the impossible ha ha ....Oh Lisa ........ paynes grey (confusing name) is black.....but if you mix it with white it makes a lovely blue grey....am using it over the background...final coat and the skin shadows...Painting tomorrow...only have 3 days left... then it's back to school to meet my new class of 30 ten year olds...ah well I've still got about 4 weekends left until this goes to the framers ...who knows what it will be or look like
ps put the nail polish in for fun so I'm glad you like it! :)
02-10-2005, 03:48 AM
Just scrolling from top to bottom again. They're all smashing indeed. The red nail polish is a real vibrant extra touch, loving it !
Read that little note from rear-admiral xwz ... did you do a drawing or painting of their Royal Highnesses ? Can you show us ........... curious as we all are :D
02-10-2005, 05:24 AM
Hi Kim, yes I want to see that too..
Oh Gilberte good eyes you have...
bye girls. have a great day.
02-10-2005, 07:23 PM
I've missed a lot in such a short time. I really like the dark background, and less is more seems to be a great approach. I think the collage turned out amazing.
These are really great overall :)
02-10-2005, 09:24 PM
Hey Guys: Gilberte, Lisa, Ryan.......
Yep I did a coloured pencil sketch for Princess Di and Prince Charles.....the 1/2 finished copy is on the collage....lost the photo of the finished drawing.....might be packed away somewhere??? I lived in London for two years and I saw the wedding on TV at the time....took a photo of the wedding group........did the drawing and dropped it off at the palace rolled up in a cardboard tube....was very surprised to get the letter back ...there's a copy on my website.
Just working on the back of the head panel....will probably post something tonight :D :D
02-11-2005, 04:40 AM
Have put the 8 panels back together...... .painted in most of the unfinished sections.......and have worked on the back of the head and left arm of the one with nailpolish
02-11-2005, 04:55 AM
Oh boy my dear Kim..Back to 8...LOLOL... :D Curious, What made you back to 8? Like I said I like the 4 or the 8...Works great both ways..
Excellent work on the head one..Love the hair and texture. super shadowing..
Excellent arms too.. Would love to have your arms!!
Really coming along eh? This is wonderful.
Almost forgot there is a WIP FORUM !!!!!!!!!!!
If I number the paintings in your last photograph 1 till 8.
Number 1 3 5 8. Fit together scale wise, so does the remainig group.
I don't know if that aspect has played a role before in you making your choice....thought just to bring that up.............
( did I add to the confusion or not?? :p )
Two panels with 4 paintings each might be a more manageable solution anyway)
Very interesting project... I like the graphic aspect of it.
02-11-2005, 07:10 AM
Hi Kim...I am so enjoying your process.....Even if I am getting dizzy :D ....Thanks for that.... (not getting dizzy...sharing your process  )
02-11-2005, 10:10 AM
Nearly there! I'm glad you moved the collaged one over.....for this reason: with the figure so low in the piece I felt she was weighed down by the past (the info in the collage) and having it last in line seemed depressing to me. Also wonder why the big red ? mark. But this interpretation is less powerful now that the series is ending with a more 'thoughtful' pose.
This is such a strong piece.
02-11-2005, 10:43 PM
Hi Lisa, Caroline, Lauren and Kathkeen.....thanks so much for your thoughts and comments....it's so good to get other artists perspectives on this one.....it's probably the most important artwork (to me) that I've ever done so I'm glad I have you all to share it with......
LOL...I've been juggling the panels around all day and I still keep coming back to the 8 .......Lisa....maybe because it gives a bigger picture of the process involved in painting a self portrait.....oh have I mentioned the title???....."Self Portrait...A Day in a Life..."
I have looked at the different size factor Caroline and I find the smaller figures seem to look lost without the larger figures in there to contrast with them...keep half closing my eyes to see if any of them jump out too much..
Lauren...lol you're right.... it is making me dizzy ...a bit like smelling perfume...after three you lose your sense of smell ha ha ...I think it's like that with me visually
Ah Yes Kathleen very perceptive to think that way about the collage...that's the interesting thing about art ...everyone has such varied perceptions...initially I chose to put in part of my cv on the collage because the archibald is so political....and....I hope none of the judges read this....sometimes..... it's not who you are .....but who you know??? hence the ?
...the archibald is a lottery....they usually have between 800 to 1,000 entries and about 30 odd are selected as finalists each year....just getting hung would make my day....the panel is made up of business people, media personalities and one artist....am painting this to appeal to all of them??? or basically to please me????...he he...I think thats a challenge!
Anyway better get back to it...haven't done any painting today cause I've been rearranging and arranging the panels and cleaning allll my brushes!!!
02-12-2005, 02:45 AM
Ah...went back to the photo reference on the back of the head shot and found a mini portrait ....in the mirror..... so will have a go at painting it in tonight :wink2:
ps this might change the order....againnnn
02-12-2005, 06:30 PM
Quite a few changes....got rid of a lot of the collage...thought it was too busy and besides a lot of that info goes on the entry form anyway.....trying out 6 panels??????
02-12-2005, 06:57 PM
5 & 6 are so similar in pose....could you seperate them?
Maybe swap 1 and 5?
02-12-2005, 07:07 PM
I think you've pushed portraiture over the line into something much more.
02-12-2005, 07:26 PM
Hi Kathleen. Mikey.....Was doing it as you spoke LOL...... Kathleen!!...Mikey...as long as I don't go over the cliff!!
need to black out the white square on panel 1 right side....cheers kim....oh see what you mean about 1 and 5 ....oooh...verry tempting to extend over into other panels now.....eg overlap figures into adjacent panels??????
02-13-2005, 01:09 AM
Well end of the day here...going back to work tomorrow......so will be working on this after hours
this one needs a fair bit of work yet!!!
Madly at it!!!!!!!
02-14-2005, 05:12 AM
Hi Kim, Oh I have missed quite a bit! You have been really busy.
I did not even have a chance to log on over the weekend.
Looking superb. Very much like the order you have set them up now.
The little reflection of your self from the back of the head in the mirror is super!
02-15-2005, 06:20 PM
Not even going to venture a guess as to what you will do next :D ...The expressions are wonderful...planning, thinking, mulling, incubating ideas, questioning, taking a break, gathering courage and then putting paint to canvas...lots of us can relate....
02-16-2005, 10:03 PM
Thanks Lisa and Lauren for calling in and for your comments....will probably post something at the weekend......all I can say at this stage.....back to 4 panels!!!
02-17-2005, 06:56 PM
I like the six the most! And the last order is great, it's perfect! One thing, (de ja vue) the eyes in the last panel (bottom right) are off :) lol . Figured I'd be the one to notice. I love these, I WISH my self-portraits would come along this well.
Oh, is that white line around you going to stay in the last one (bottom right) I'm not sure I like it, possibly the only thing wrong (other than the eye). I think it makes you look too wide.
02-18-2005, 04:08 AM
H a ha Ryan....sometimes I think I'm WIDER... ....BUT
I HAVE FINISHED!!!!!!  :crying: :D
this is it ....final post.....except for the framing .....of course .....which is gonna cost a small fortune!!! ..and of course THE PARTY to show it off to all my critics!!! ...9th APRIL ....ya all invited.....my good...GOOD PALS.....and artistic friends.....Lisa...Gilberte....Ryan .... Lauren....Kathleen....Caroline....Mikey....Alishia....Carpe....and Maryanne....your support and comments have been totally invaluable!!!!
have used insanity as an excuse .....and let loose with the the house paint brush of zinc white ....the narrowest of paint brushes loaded with vermillion red...and a lot of anggggst!!!!
Couldn't help myself.....what da ya think of the sig and date as welll....am I obsessive or what!!!!!
ps haven'y got a title set in concrete yeeet....but self portrait....black and white ....red all over....is Dave's fav......but you know how indecisive I am....lol....ha ha
PPS.,...am going to post in open critique as well!!!
02-18-2005, 04:44 AM
you Are One Enthusiastic Painting Artist ...............
02-18-2005, 05:01 AM
 LOL... THANKS HEAPS!!!!
02-18-2005, 06:13 AM
Kim!!!! Love it! it shows such a leap of faith and NO FEAR!...Love that title...made me giggle....and kind of like the light-hearted title on such a serious piece....Thanks for the invite :D ...LOL...This has been a wonderful WIP....thanks for letting us peek in...
02-18-2005, 06:40 AM
 THANK...YOU.....SO MUCH...
02-18-2005, 07:08 AM
More thank you's......Tamera .. :D
and thank you....Krispee....for your "hatter"
02-18-2005, 09:33 AM
Kim - it's Friday here and I think I should go out and have a beer and toast you right now...(well it is 9:30 am) but still.... fabulous ending. I feel like we all stressed along with you too. So glad you used all the panels in the end. Now I see why the red ? etc.... the brillant touch was the big white swooshes giving it all a sense of Movement and unifying it.
Well I think you are a lock for that show. We want pics from the party - and of course photo of the piece framed.
I like Dave's title....only one I thought of was Mono y Mono y Mono and I'm not even sure why :D
Thanks for a great ride

02-18-2005, 03:20 PM
:D ...THANK YOU ...........mmmmmm..interesting title........we've just realised here that once the work is framed we won't fit it back through the door!!! he he.......so it might be a party in the boat shed or the garage.....it 'll probably go up to framers (he's a magician) early next week.(fingers crossed)....it's going to take him a couple weeks....so just about right timing for the party......any way I'm just going to have another look at it.....he he...try Mark's arrangement... :D
02-18-2005, 03:53 PM
I think the disconnect in my brain this morning was from the saying
'Mano y Mano' which I THINK means Man to Man. ? And I fuzzed it up to Mono... (the mind is a strange thing)
02-18-2005, 05:06 PM
Dave and I were sitting here thinking.....mono.....monologue.....one....painting can be such an alone "thing"
especially self portraits.....so obviously your subconscious was on the right track.... :D
02-26-2005, 01:15 PM
Hey, these came out so good, I'm wondering when you're starting your next paintin, or paintings at your rate :)
BTW, when is the competition happening? Let us know how you do! :D
02-27-2005, 11:47 PM
Hi Ryan ...thanks for dropping by...actually I'm still working on this one ....have another 2 weeks before it hits the framers....gone back to 9 panels....3...3...3 top to bottom and am juggling these around on paper as the ceiling is not high enough.....so will post something final (that way I know I have the final version...ha ha )the day before it goes to the framers......the work goes into the comp on the 15th April
ps doing any portraits yourself?
03-01-2005, 02:46 AM

03-04-2005, 07:55 PM
Ha Ha....Lauren ....have swapped panel 1 and 9 over.....have to start another work....lol......and give this one some peace!!
03-04-2005, 08:28 PM
Kim, the amount of work you've put into this is absolutely amazing, and it really shows
The middle one is really great, the way it's painted makes it stand out so much in comparison to the rest of them.
And, unfortounately, I don't have any portraits going on right now, I painted over an old one that was annoying me, but other than that I've got nothing.
03-04-2005, 09:01 PM
Hey Ryan....thank you....that middle one does stick ouch!!!....that's how I feel at the moment...thought centre was the only spot for it..lol .have just posted a diptych of the kids on OC ...but am going to start a small portrait of my dear Dad who has been gone nearly 3 years now...(for my Mum)....I think I need to try a still life too....but....you know what it's like...I gotta clean all the flamin brushes first...lol
ps sure you'll come up with an idea soon! :D
04-01-2005, 04:34 AM
Well here it is ...finally framed and a pic of me signing it finally...
You're all invited to the showing ..have posted an invite...it goes to Sydney on the 15th April...so keep your fingers crossed...
this is where the party will be...our backyard... :D  BYO chair and glass... :cat:
this is living in the boat shed at the moment... :D :D...couldn't help myself with that white in the bottm right corner...added...but think I will paint over ..do you think the back of the neck in the first panel needs toning down a bit???... :D
04-01-2005, 04:52 AM
Hey Kim, WOW, Whistle, Whistle!! Looks SUPERB. Love the frame. Man, It is huge! and Grand! A super title too.
Wish I could attend the showing. And see that masterpiece IRL! And that back yard!
No, I wouldnt tone down the neck. But you know best. What would you do? Add some darks in there? BTW, I like the white bit you added. :)
Wishing you the best of luck, all my positivie feelings and wishes go with you mate!
Have a smashing showing. I know it will be a hit!
04-01-2005, 05:39 AM
Hi Lisa...thanks for the feedback..mate... :D  ...now you have me thinking about that white... :D ...when I look at the work my eye is being drawn to the white on the back of the neck...I thought I might tone the neck down to the same grey that is on the side of the neck... ..maybe I'm being too picky....I think that's why Dave has put it in the boatshed...LOL
How are you going with your PARIS painting?....I'm so looking forward to seeing it finished ... :cat:
Once framed...........don't touch......(my motto I think:angel: )
No......serious.....otherwise painting will always be a works in progress
Next time I'm in Australia I'll drop by.........for sure.......do you windsurf????
Have fun at the party !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
04-01-2005, 08:38 AM

04-01-2005, 07:54 PM
Hi guys...thanks for dropping by
Caroline...thanks for the advice...Dave is doing cartwheels here....my biggest problem is knowing when to stop and you're right ..it's framed... :D I don't windsurf...but I do get out on the jetty sometimes...lol ...thanks for the good wishes... :)
