As of this month, WetCanvas! is offically 3 years old. :) Over the past 3 years, many of you have contributed significantly to the community, bringing your diverse and unique insights, your artistic experience, and your personalities to bear. Over the past few months, the WetCanvas! moderators have had numerous (often lengthy) discussions about creating an official "award" program to recognize those individuals who go above and beyond with their contributions to the WC! community. Today, I am proud to announce the official rollout of the WetCanvas! Awards Program!
Note: this system is in draft format - award criteria, the number and types of awards, and the appearance of the awards are subject to change.
Currently, there are over 40 different awards that each member can attain (we'll add others over time). Some are easier to obtain than others, but all of them are attainable by merit only. Each night, our awards system scans the WC! database, and automatically grants awards to members. The exact formulas behind these decisions remains a WC! secret. That's for you to figure out. However, we will at least give you some pointers ... :)
Awards come in 4 categories:
Merit Badges
Ribbons
Medals
Trophies
Merit Badges
Merit badges are the easiest to obtain. To obtain a merit badge, a member must show a significant contribution to a medium or subject-specific forum.
Ribbons
Ribbons are similar to merit badges, in that they are fairly easy to obtain. Ribbons are offered for significant contributions to many of the non-medium/subject specific forums, as well as other things, like publishing articles and participating in art projects.
Medals
Medals are fairly difficult to obtain, and the recipients have shown a very substantial commitment to the WC! community.
Trophies
Ah, the creme de la creme! The recipient of a trophy (of any classification) has truly made their mark on the community here. You won't see many of these floating around.
Each member's awards can be seen in their "shadow box". For those that aren't Martha Stewart fans (most of you, I hope - heheh), I'll explain briefly what a "shadow box" is. Basically, in real life, a shadow box is nothing more than a small display case that hangs on the wall. Inside the case are generally awards, photos, memorabilia, and other sundries.
Each member's shadow box can be seen on his/her member profile page. There is also now a small image of a medal in the identification box of award holders (that small area where your tinyhead and stars appear in your posts). Clicking on this link will also bring up a person's shadow box.
Awards get updated nightly - so be sure to check back the next day if you feel that you are in line for a new award. We've run the initial batch of awards through, and are happy to say that currently, a total of 307 awards have been handed out! This breaks down into 127 merit badges, 81 ribbons, and 99 medals).
Also, for those who will invariably ask me - awards are not redeemable for anything - we will, however, hopefully be announcing something soon with regard to special discounts with certain vendors for WC! members.
With that, my lips are sealed, and I leave you to explore the wonderful new world of WC! awards! :D
