I'm wondering why there is no "Call for Entries" section, i.e. a listing of various juried shows calling for work. Perhaps there is one and I just can't find it; this site is huge and I am fairly new here.
If one does not exist already, could we discuss adding one? I think it would be a valuable resource for many artists and if members could update with shows they personally are aware of, we could all benefit from this sharing of information.

Hi Magda & thanks for responding.
From the scarcity of replies here though, I think I know why there is no call for entries section; the interest in entering juried shows appears to be minimal here. Oh, well.

I'm not sure why you conclude that at all - but what medium are you talking about, and where? - and remember that this is a worldwide site.

If you want to start a thread asking for the info, just start it - post some yourself, to start off. (after all, somebody's got to go get the information ;) )

Juried shows do get mentioned in the various medium and subject specific forums.

"I'm not sure why you conclude that at all -"
I guess because it was very quiet here...
"but what medium are you talking about, and where? - and remember that this is a worldwide site."
Yes! which is why I thought it would be a great opportunity to start a kind of clearing house of info; Many shows accept slide or dig. entries from all over, and you may know of an opportunity that I haven't heard of and vice-versa.

If I had any pride at all, I would let this thread finish its quiet death. But this one was so bizarre I felt the need to share. Scam, or just unusual?:

BIRD2005 International Art Award
Organizer: Beijing Natural culture center
Sponsor : Beijing Jialuan art house
Changqing art fund
I) Theme
The theme of this award is: Birds -- Being and dream
According to an ancient Chinese legend, the image of mankind's ancestor combines the features of the human head and a bird's body. Celestial beings also have the feathers and wings of bird. The magpie, swallow, and peacock are auspicious creatures in Chinese traditional culture. The Phoenix, reborn from the ashes, also has particularly unique features. The bird plays an important role in many different cultures and appears as a symbol of the otherworldly soul.
Among the more than 9000 varieties of birds that populate the earth, 1329, nearly 1/8 of total species exist in China. China has one of the world's largest bird populations and a lot of endangered bird species are peculiar to China. However, with the excessive use of insecticide and mankind's cruel hunting, 78 kinds of birds have been already are now listed as endangered species in China. On the migratory paths of many birds, thousands of hunters are using shotguns and nets to capture and kill them each year. In Shanghai alone, there are about 150,000-200,000 birds caught and killed each spring and autumn, among them more than a dozen endangered species.
Above all, the catching and killing of the wild birds on a large scale is unexpectedly public. The wild birds are sold freely up to more than twenty or thirty kinds in rural markets. Catching and selling birds is becoming a thriving trade, resulting in a large amount of consumers in the city believing the birds do not represent life, but only delicacies on their dining table.
Because of this, we and other bird organizations have many tasks. We buy birds in the markets and set them free and write articles to support protecting birds to newspapers, inform people of the importance birds in the ecological balance, and the hazard that would occur to mankind if the balance is broken, etc. We find that figures and theories are unable to evoke the love and enthusiasm of people to live peacefully with birds.
At this moment, we think art, only art, can touch the soul directly. Art infects people through love and not hatred.
We are holding this exhibition in order to make people understand that birds, like mankind, have abundant emotions and dreams, are the children of sunshine and wind, the spirit and envoy who brings the good luck, the symbol of inspiration, and the source of human's free consciousness.
Nowadays, the meaning of the bird has gone far beyond itself into figurative imagination. We can say that the bird is one of the most interesting creatures to art and the imagination. A lot of artistic behaviors and works are based on this, from the real bird to abstract birds, the uncanny mask of bird's character and the illusion of bird hovering in dreams, the philosophical birds and metaphysics bird . . . The bird is actually a part of us, the bird means more to us than just its physical representation . .
We believe that the artists from all over the world will show the bird's embodiment of our inner world and free dreams, and show the beauty of the bird with their own works. Through the efforts of artists, people will form the habit of loving birds, and condemn the behavior of mistreating birds.
II) Award

here is a link to the art section of the vermont weekly SEVEN DAYS. it lists vermont calls for entries each week. since this is a global forum, naturally many folks might not have access to these shows- but an interesting way to develop a forum such as this might be to post links to regional lists, that can be convienently found. the vermont council on the arts also has a website will calls for entries.

Katieface,

In regard to your information from China--Beijing in particular. It sounds about right (this information), having lived in China for nine years. This is the way they do things. Their (China's) "state" run, National Gallery located in Beijing, (at least back in 1998) ran pretty much like this. It (the venue) looked nothing like one would expect a "state" gallery to look like. Not to mention the fact, that individual artists could sell their works (firsthand) while people were strolling through the galleries. Think: pressure sales at each and every turn. It reminded me of a tourist trap at the time, yet this was a officially run and recognized public gallery. I would like to think things have improved for the "state" galleries by now, but some things take time.

Private ran galleries were coming on line more and more in the mid 90's and now there are well known high end privately ran galleries all over the country. Never say capitalism doesn't work in a communist-socialistic country.

On the other hand, one would certainly consider that this offer is such a excellent way to create for an individual, a hugh art collection.

For those looking for upcoming exhibits there is an excellent magazine called "Art Calendar" that lists all the major shows throughout the country and also lots of International venues for exhibitions.

Thanks for starting an interesting thread.

Hi H20
Thanks for the perspective on the Beijing art scene... it explains at least some of what seemed idiosyncratic about this call. It seemed a little weird to me to think of mailing my original art to China without first having somebody preview slides, but... as with all calls for entries, each artist must look at the risks and decide for themselves.
I have heard of Art Calendar but have never bought it. Have looked at copies of Art List. Being a bit of an anarchist at heart, I think information should be free. In other words, I'm too cheap to subscribe to this, but any subscribers out there want to share info?:)
Here's one gleaned from the back of Artist's Magazine.

I agree, Marc, that it would be good and very user-friendly to have a section like this organized into links according to region. I'm not sure how to that, though...so here is another one in wilyl-nilly fashion.

Kerri - that will be great! Looking forward to it.

For US people I think Artdeadlines.com is still the recommendation I see a lot. (it's a subscription service)

In the UK one of the best places is A-N magazine (Artist Newsletter). www.a-n.co.uk is their site but Opportunities section is only for subscribers or in the magazine.

DID YOU CHUCK IT ALL TO BECOME AN ARTIST?

A Los Angeles based television production company is looking for female visual artists (sculptors, painters, etc.) who have chucked successful corporate-type careers to fulfill their dreams of becoming artists.

The pilot is scheduled to shoot this fall, and the crew will travel to various North American (US and perhaps Canada) locations to shoot several segments.

If you fit the bill and are interested in participating, please PM me here or email me: spicuzza (at) gmail (dot) com. Please include the following:

(a) contact information
(b) a short "corporate" bio and a short "artist" bio
(c) links to your artist website, if you have one,
(d) links to pictures of your work, if they are online,
(e) information about any upcoming events (dates, location) where your work will be on display, such as a gallery, art fair or other event, that might coincide with an autumn filming.

I will forward your information or questions to the production company. Thank you.

Funny, I just came here to suggest this, too. There should be something like an "opportunities" forum, that lists everything from upcoming shows and competitions to people looking for artwork for commercial purposes (just one case could be something like unsigned bands doing their own CD who want artwork for a cover) . . . anything possible, really. Some of the info would be location specific, but I don't see a problem with that--you could just say, "UK Artists--Grant Opportunity" or whatever.

If we want to make this site of maximum use to artists, that seems like one of the more valuable sections we could have. It would be solely up to users to post the information, as they can.

Don't let it die :( You have a great idea here! I will try to post a few in the coming days. :)

I think it needs to have its own forum though. A lot of people would not look for this info in the Site Discussion Forum, and a lot of people don't otherwise visit here. With its own forum, it will probably start off slow, but as people come to discover that it's there, I can imagine it being one of the more popular areas. Heck, we could maybe even end up dividing it into subsections based on geographic areas.

i usually scan the net to find for this sort of stuff all the the time!! soo i will have tog through and post what i find- some of what i think will be useful.. so thanks for getting this going :D
and to me it makes it even better being a "world wide"site.. for some it may even show a market or availability for what ever we may be creating ,, or what ever.. so ill be back often to see whats going in here as well to post what ever i find..

This sounds like a great idea!

I've been away for a while and coming back to WC is like visiting an old friend...

I wonder if the moderators could create some icon which would "flag" the calls for entries-- Or perhaps the forum could be organized by the "due dates" of the actual call for entries? (e.g. entries closing in Sept - Oct. 2005 would be put in that thread, ones for November -December, etc.--I think 2 or 3 months per group would be reasonable.)

Or, would it be easier to post each new call on its own thread?

Katieface,
I can't find the prospectus for the Women in Arts show at the occca.org site. Could you post a longer URL? See what happens when you try to do a good turn? You get to do another. ^_^'
Thanks,
C.
